We stayed at the gallery inn for 3 night and we found this place very welcoming and warm. Every room decorated tastfully. The Garden and the pool are so rustic. The staff were so warm and friendly. Great continental breakfast in the beautiful court yard. Location was great walking distance to every where. Everything was outstanding. We will go back there again.

We started our vacation in San Juan at this hotel and continued to tell other traveler's for the next 3 weeks, they must stay there if they ever go to PR and continue to praise it! It is a labyrinth of hallways and stairs where everywhere you turn, you see something new and beautiful. Could be something artistic, a new room to relax in...Unlike a hotel, where you return to sleep, we felt we wanted to return "home" to just hang out...in the garden, next to the pool..enjoy a glass a wine. Loved the wifi access, even on the rooftop. Great location. Walked to the Forts and shopping easily. Owners very friendly. Definitely go to their beach house in the evening. If you are needing all the comforts of a fancy hotel with room service, fancy towels and a contemporary design, then don't stay at the Gallery Inn. If you want to sleep in a canopied bed with a room and halls with character, that is clean and has helpful staff -at the front desk and with the owners, then the Gallery Inn is your place. We will return.

Took the cab for $21 to the hotel. The building is located on the ocean, half way in between from the fort El Moro and the fort San Cristobal. The front of the hotel is so non-descript that I was very relieved when the cab driver pointed us to an iron security gate. If you arrive at night, it is best for the women to wear flat shoes as the cobblestones in the breezeway and patio on the way to the reception area are very uneven and worn. The hotel is exactly as advertised. Each room is eclectically and elaborately decorated, so much so that you notice new things each day. On day three, I notice a small iron pot hanging from the bathroom ceiling! It had no function, just artistic whimsy. There are multiple settings to sit, visit, read, write: 4 patio areas on the main level, a reading room up a narrow stairway, a roof top terrace. On the lowest level there is a covered couch area illuminated by a chandalier and surrounded by a wall of orchids, a small pool and a gardens; perfect place for a couple in love to cuddle up! Each of the areas are decorated with sculputure, busts, reliefs and surprises. We enjoyed granola and fruit each day in the terrace garden surrounded by birds, people, tiny lizards, artwork and flowering plants.

The staff was very helpful upon request but did not hover. Soft drinks, beer, and wine were available at all times via an honor bar off the dining room. I enjoy a Malbec and we ordered it when we had dinner one night in the old world style dinner restaurant on the lowest level. The food was very good, in good portions, but a bit pricey. If you don't finish the bottle of wine, you can take it too your room and finish it the next night. A classical guitarist played a variety of music. We asked him to speak about his selections and he was very agreeable. The atmosphere, the food, the music was enchanting.

To enjoy the inn, you must also be aware that the buildings are of the colonial period. The plaster crumbles here and there, the walkways are not even, it is a bit dusty, and due to the humidity there is a musty smell in the bedrooms. The inn staff do what they can, but you are in a humid environment. We had a room with a futon for a third guest. My niece said it was comfortable, but the foot portion did collapse one night. As for the bed, the mattress was very good, but for the price of the room, I would expect better pillows.

Old San Juan is a very small area, so the hotel was perfectly located. You truly can walk to the forts, the shopping district, the museums and across to the bay side. In four days, we did not take a cab unless it was to and from the airport. Old San Juan is very interesting. I urge you to enjoy the food and drink, talk to the people, take a walking tour, ride the free shuttle which has a stop close to the inn, look for novel items in the shops, and enter the Cathedral in which Ponce de Leon is interred.

A fabulous getaway to a 17th-century Spanish mansion! From the art and sculptures everywhere to the plants and trees, it really felt like we were in Puerto Rico when we stayed at the Gallery Inn- not just another chain hotel that could be anywhere in the world.
Good continental breakfast, outstanding roof deck and beach house, great service and in-house restaurant (the snapper with cesar sauce was superb)- can't say enough good things about this fabulous inn!
Not for you if you need state-of-the-art anything (although the showers were very modern and nice), a television or don't appreciate art and culture. The only downside to staying in Old San Juan is no beach access but if you want to feel like you are really in Puerto Rico, skip the beachfront hotels on Isla Verde and stay here instead.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Library- overlooked the pool but was very quiet.

If you are an artist, like me, The Gallery Inn is for you. Every nook and cranny in the hotel is is populated with prints, paintings, sculptures, photographs, art and artifacts of all kinds. The restaurant is outstanding or just enjoy a glass of wine in the garden or one of the many sitting areas in the hotel. Follow the winding staircases up to the several decks for a spectacular view of the ocean, Old San Juan or La Perla. Each room is themed and unique and the original architecture of the old homes is preserved as much as possible. The staff are very helpful and informed. Some are art students and can talk to you about the work and the history of the inn.

If you are looking for a unique hotel to stay, then the Gallery Inn is the place for you. The owner has artwork on display throughout the entire hotel. Even the swimming pool was created with an artistic flair. There are only about 25 rooms at this hotel, and when you stay here, you kind of feel like you are staying with friends, because you really get a chance to meet many of the other guests in the relaxing atmosphere of this hotel. I would highly recommend staying at the Gallery Inn.

This is definitely a one-of-a-kind place, with interesting courtyards, nooks and crannies, winding stair cases, birds all over the place, and a beautiful rooftop. It's more of a B&B type place than a hotel. The rooms all seem like they will be different. We had one with a double bed and a single bed with a small bathroom. The place is quite old, and the bathroom was very dated, but it was clean. The air conditioning was a bit of a challenge to get working right, though. Also, we had to walk up a very steep/narrow metal winding staircase that was challenging at best with luggage. So beware if you have problems walking, etc. The breakfast that was provided is very modest, but does the job. The pool is also very small, but it's in such a whimsical courtyard that it's pretty awesome in that respect. The hallways, front "lobby" all have such character. The location is great too, for exploring old San Juan.
