“Disappointed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2013

We stayed at this hotel for two nights March 7 & 8 2013. Staff very friendly and helpful. Birds interesting. Location good. Would only stay there again if they got a few things worked out, cleaniness, air-conditioning and cost. Not a good value. Way too expensive for what you get. We really wanted to like this place, but it fell short.

Room Tip: If you do stay here ask for a room with an ocean view. Inside rooms quite small.

This hotel is made up of 3 houses, all quite old, which form this unique hotel. The staff is very nice, if not efficient. We had to ask to have our room made up at 3 pm, and were told that they have until 6 pm to make up the rooms, hmmm. The free breakfast is okay, but the coffee is dreadful, better to go outside for coffee.

We had a flying ant infestation in our room one night, which was easily solved with bug spray, but it would have been nice if the pile of dead bugs had been removed during the cleaning the next day.

We referred to the bed as a 'taco bed" as we rolled to the middle, and the street light outside our window, with minimal curtains was pretty bright.

Overall, we enjoyed it, it is a convenient location, a bit noisy at night on the street side.

Room Tip: Not sure aobut the other rooms and the noise level or outside light.

We had a couple good recommendations prior to our stay, so we kinda knew what to expect... but were still amazed and thrilled with this place (and it's cocktail hour Beach House, just a 7 minute walk away).
Fantastic panoramic views from the rooftop deck, excellent breakfast (stellar corn muffins!). We were in the "library" and would love to have had a chance to look in on more of the rooms, as they are all unique, but were just too busy walking the streets of Old San Juan. Would return in a heartbeat!
Top notch! Thanks to the whole staff for a great (all-too-short) stay!

Although the common rooms are full of sculpture and art, which I love, the inn is just plain dirty. It's difficult to enjoy the interesting architecture and the meandering rooms when all you can see is the lack of cleanliness. I couldn't wait to leave, frankly. I am not a clean freak, but everywhere I looked there was a layer of dirt and a feeling of neglect and decay. The people who worked there were very nice but that didn't make up for the lack of hygiene. No one should pay $200 for a room that is barely inhabitable. This is my first review ever...and that's only because I don't want anyone else to end up being so very disappointed.

March is the month of active trade winds. Kites fly in abundance over the near by fields of El Morro and everywhere there are the dropped leaves of our desiduos tropical trees shedding themselves in preparation for spring’s new growth. The Inn’s public areas are totally open to all these weather changes, while all rooms are provided with excellent air conditioning backed by a generator, March is the month when leaves twirl over our interior gardens and into the pool. 8 of our staff of 25 spend most of their days sweeping our decks and open areas from early dawn and through the night to keep the Inn in top cleanliness for our guests. While some have asked how we manage to keep “everything so clean”, I am truly saddened that you found our many gardens and open spaces not up to your standards. Jan D’Esopo, owner

Does not feel like a hotel-more like a rambling, crumbly old family home or an old movie set. Lots of interesting nooks and crannies to explore and wander around. Very historic feeling old building, several floors and stairs everywhere. If you have balance or walking issues it is not the place for you because the floors in courtyards and halls and stairs are very uneven.
The room had two large closets to hang clothes and put suitcases, 2 small balconies with ocean views, and AMAZING bed!! Tempurpedic mattress that was heavenly!
No amenities in the bathroom like a hotel of this price would normally have, no shower caps or those sorts of things-it did have cheap soap and shampoo.
The location was spectacular on the perimeter road of Old San Juan with vies of the Morro Fort and Ocean- always a nice breeze.
Very minimal continental breakfast-also not what you would expect at this price-they did not have enough cups and plates and ran out of clean ones all 3 mornings-sort of weird.
Not high on cleanliness in the rooms-a bit dusty, musty and bathroom cramped and sink very high for my shorter sister.
The first two nights we slept well but Saturday night we were kept up ALL night until daybreak by loud rowdy partyers on the street below and lout car radios blasting music all night.
I mention all these cons so you know what you are really getting.
That said, we had a really fun 3 days in Old San Juan.

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room, make sure it has a bathroom ensuite and AWAY from the street!!!

We have stayed at the Gallery Inn twice with Jan, her sister Teresa and all of the beloved parrots. We had a suite with an ocean view the first time and it was very nice. The suites are decorated with art, books, old wood furnishing, beautiful fabrics and lace. The suites are just over the top and highly recommended.
However, on the other hand, the basic rooms are on the verge of horrid. They are musty, small, cramped, and poorly lit. Our bathroom was not neat (clean up to our standards). The space under the sink was completely unusable and when opened smelled of ammonia (very strong odor). The only way to get two people in the bathroom at the same time was if one was in the shower. I know they do come in and service the rooms daily, but the room really needed a good spring type cleaning and didn't look as if it had one in quite some time. The linens and towels were clean, but the floor area wasn't at all. The shower curtain let a pool of water escape the first night we were there, no big deal. I went to clean up the water and the towel was unbelievably dirty. Especially since we had just checked in. The basic rooms make a Holiday Inn look like a suite at a Mandarin Oriental.
The entire hotel however is full character and well worth the experience to get the feel of Old San Juan if you ask us. It has tons of nooks and crannys to get lost or read a book in. The sunset views from the upper deck are the best in the city. Complete 360 degree views. The honor bar is very nice with top end booze and beer. The free breakfast is OK, just avoid the $13.00 omlette (ingredients are fresh but overpriced if you ask us). There are plenty of other places to go and pay for breakfast hearby if the free stuff isn't your cup of tea.
Our hosts are always very friendly and accomodating when asked for any assistance. The wait staff was friendly as well.
We love Campeche and all of his buddies. Even when we visit Old San Juan and do not stay here (last time we stayed at El Convento) we stop by to say hello and visit the birds.
The new pool area is very nicely done and a welcome place to relax at the end of the day before washing up for dinner.
While it probably isn't for everyone, if a sense of adventure and something completely different is what you desire, it can be quite fun and interesting!

Room Tip: Pay the extra $$$ to get one of the top rooms!
