It was a hot day, so we got a sweaty workout in hiking up the hills to the Castillo. Once there the views are beautiful and understanding the history is interesting.

I can't decide if this was my favorite part of Old San Juan! There are so many awesome things to see while here in this small old town. San Cristobal is definitely a must see! We spent over two hours exploring the fort, walking up to the top to observe, and down to the dungeon to look at the old walls and tunnels. There are photos in some areas of what the fort looked like in days gone by, including photos of the military presence here during WWII, which I found very interesting. If you pay to get into San Cristobal ($3), then you get a discount when you go down to El Morro (or vice versa) Some people at our hotel said they got in free to both with admission to one fort, but that might have been a weekend rate. The views of the city, the bay, and the ocean are breathtaking. You can stand at the top of San Cristobal and see down to El Morro in the distance. I suggest walking the mile in between the two forts for a scenic walk through La Perla district, which is said by some to be a "slum" but it is actually a beautiful area. We felt perfectly safe walking through the area, even after dark. If you can't make the walk, the green trolleys are free and can take you from one fort to the other and around OSJ in general. Cab fare was $17 from Condado area to Plaza Colon, then a short walk up to then entrance of San Cristobal. You can walk back down to the Plaza again to catch a cab back to your hotel. They pull up every five minutes or so.

People in the U.S just don't have the oppertunity to see structures this old that have been preserved. The history of the forts is so interesting and amazing. This one has less stairs and is easier walking then the other, but my husband especially liked them both.

I advice to see both: Castillo de San Cristobal and El Morro. However it appears to be the same, the short walk and the small differences were very interesting.
