“A beautiful gate with much history”
Reviewed May 2, 2014

The San Juan Gate was the formal entranceway into the city for dignitaries. Ships would let off their distinguished guests at this point when arriving in the city before continuing further into the harbor to unload cargo and let less famous passengers off. The gate is well preserved and the deep red color makes it stand out against the stone fortifications. The street that runs up from the gate to the square in front of San Juan Cathedral is arguable one of the prettiest in the city - don't miss it!

“Hidden historical gem”
Reviewed April 26, 2014

The gate is a bit hard to find but when you do you are a bit shocked by its beauty. There is a nice walkway that you can access from the gate. People swim in the water down there and you can sit in the shade and enjoy the tropical air. It is worth exploring.

This is a beautiful area of Old San Juan and we even felt safe down here walking at night time. Great photo ops in this area.

“Worth the Walk”

Beautiful location and interesting information. Check out the Governor's Mansion inside the wall above the gate. You can't go in.

“Scenic Walking Tour”
Reviewed April 18, 2014

Arriving by cruise ship for just a short stay, we opted to take a leisurely walk through historical Old San Juan. We walked uphill at first to go along the top of the wall where there were interesting sculptures & architecture to be found as well as a good view of the harbor. Just before the gate is a very picturesque fountain. Signage at the actual gate tells you its history. Once through the gate we continued walking along the water to view a well-maintained and historical area. On the way back be hopped on board the free trolley for one last look around old San Juan. Our touring option was totally free, good exercise and a great way to to see OSJ in a more personal way.
