We walked down Calle Caleta straight through the San Juan gate. When you walk outside the gate, the view is amazing. The walls, the water, the city, the colors. You can just imagine arriving via boat after a long journey.

We walked through this historic gate and enjoyed the information posted regarding its significance. From there you can walk along the outside of the old city wall and the views across the water are all lovely.

This was the main entrance into the city 400+years ago.
Impressive as you walk through and get a feel for the massive structure that is the "wall" that once completely enclosed this city - 37' thick.
Nice views from the little plaza / park above, also nice views of the harbour, city and El Morro as you walk along the waterfront trail.

The history surrounding the gate is very interesting. I am glad to have made the stop since it does make for a nice photo- or a few if you include the surrounding views of the little court with the crazy looking tree. If you are only in port for a day, there is not much more to it, but if you are spending some time in Old San Juan it is pretty cool to have been there and to enjoy the walk along the way.
