OK, there are mixed reviews here. For shopping I would give this a poor rating. For having fun with locals and having some beers/drinks and listening/dancing to salsa music this IS the place on Friday night. We showed up around 4pm and didn't leave until 9pm! The neighborhood is safe even that late (don't be stupid). Lots of locals came up and talked with us - some even bought us a beer! Around dark, the music starts. It's a party you don't want to miss. This was my second favorite thing we did in Puerto Rico. Only second to the bio bay on Vieques. If you like clubbing on Isla Verde don't come here, you won't like it.

“not what we expected”
Reviewed March 17, 2012

shops/bars/market w/fruits and such...small, dirty area that was less than easy to locate...La Placita was tiny, dark, hot and had little to offer and afer 3 hours of walking all around SJP, Santurce and getting a $10 cab ride to SuperMax grocery store, as well as ending up @ several bus stops we should have 'skipped' we don't feel this is worth the time to find...but if we spoke spanish likely much easier to locate and maybe worth the trip...

“Do not miss this!”
Reviewed March 10, 2012

Beautiful building. In daytime there are local merchants selling their produce(picked some up-great) or souvenirs. The merchants are very friendly and helpful when asked(no pushy salespeople here!). Be sure to stop at the little shop inside in the far right side as looking at it-sell the BEST fruit smoothies-a large one will easily give you two large servings-even gave us the blender container to finish off all of it. At night, esp. Thurs and Friday becomes lively bar and restaurant scene (many choices) and inside area closes. During daytime on weekdays not many lunch choices there, but all open at evening. Wonderful place to visit!

“Happy Hour With the Locals”
Reviewed November 11, 2011

On Friday afternoon, the second full day of our visit, we were ready for a break from the tourist crowds of the Condado and Old San Juan. So based on our previous research we decided to head down to the Plaza del Mercado. While I admit our goals were modest, we were very happy with our visit.

We enjoyed some great carry-out mojitos from Coco Luis and hung out at a table in the plaza, enjoying the late-afternoon "happy hour" atmosphere and people-watching as groups of locals came and went. Despite our obvious touristy looks and iffy grasp of Spanish, we felt very welcome and will be sure to drop by again on our next visit to San Juan.

This is a market. Not worth the trip during the day. Might be a happening place at night.
