First of all this place is not cheap and can easily get to 600+ a night for a couple depending on the season and weekends days, so if price is not a problem and you want the Best location, the most charming hotel in viejo San Juan well this is the place to be.
Hotel used to be an old Convent so get that in mind when thinking about the rooms, they can be small for some people and not really modern, but the charm of this place is the architecture and history of the building, rooms and bathrooms are good size and amenities are great. There is a tapas restaurant and bar inside the hotel, really nice environment to relax, food and drinks are great.
The hotel has a beautiful terrace with nice views of the city, great place to drink your coffee or enjoy the complementary wine and cheese that they offer every afternoon. Also some lounge chairs and a small pool.
Really safe location and you can walk around the city and get immerse in the rich history and charm of old Puerto Rico and not worry about transportation.
You will see cops everywhere and as long as you are a safe traveler and don't do stupid things like thinking you are a trendy tourist that thinks is an urban explorer and likes weird places like going to the small neighborhood of La Perla located outside the wall you will be fine, (for sure you will hear about it, seems really cool from above the wall but you have no business in there unless you want to do some business in there if you know what i mean) .
The Viejo San Juan area is Full of restaurants and small stores. Not the place for you if you want the resort beach type experience, this is because is located in an area of the island that is all rocks and no sandy beaches, but all the museums, historic buildings, restaurants, coffeehouses and more are around there.
This place is awesome, Just walk the small streets 2 blocks to the old door of san juan find a bench seat looking at the ocean, listening the coquis sing, and i promise you will go back in time 500 years. Priceless.

Absolutely wonderful location. And to top it, the restaurant in the gorgeous garden courtyard is incredible. We had delicious drinks and incredible food. Our friends raved about this location when they were on their honeymoon - so glad we made it a part of ours too!

Our stay at Hotel El Convento really couldn't have been better. The hotel is even more lovely than it looks online. It's immaculate and charming, with a beautiful leafy courtyard and a rooftop view of the whole city and ocean--there's a magical quality to the place. The staff was so helpful, even upgrading us to a bigger room. The nightly wine and cheese is a great perk, and you're in the middle of everything. Can't recommend Hotel El Convento enough.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel prior to going to Vieques for a week. It was charming, comfortable, and conveniently located. The rooms all overlook a tree-filled courtyard. The wide covered walkway in front of the rooms had small tables set up where you could enjoy the view below and the breezes. Our room (4th floor) did not have a great view of the city, but was very quiet with nice furnishings and a comfortable bed.
During our stay, we had breakfast and dinner at the restaurant - Patio del Nispero. The food was excellent! If Alfredo is tending bar, ask for his recommendations for dinner.
We arrived late for the wine reception, but it looked well attended. Also, we wish we had made time for the rooftop pool.
Old San Juan is a wonderful place to walk & wander. The Spanish Colonial architecture is beautiful, the old forts are amazing, and everyone was friendly.

Room Tip: The first floor rooms appear to open directly into the restaurant area. I don't think we would...

Since arriving in the valet parking we were welcomed by the friendly staff. The same happened in the lobby. The room was perfect and it had a nice view of the San Juan Bay Area. The pool area is small but very nice. In general the place is peaceful. It has nice places to eat and enjoyed the happy hour they offer which is included in the stay. We loved it very much and plan to visit again sometime soon.

This has been our second stay at El Convento, and it's every bit as lovely as the first time. The location, on a tiny square opposite the Cathedral, towards the west end of Old San Juan, could not be improved. The hotel, which once was a convent, surrounds a tree-filled atrium, where you can watch bananaquits and Zenaida doves while you eat breakfast. Standards of hospitality are impeccable, from the nightly bed turn-down to the daily 6 pm wine and cheese reception. Even on the hottest San Juan afternoon, the building feels cool and breezy. And while it's not cheap, there are usually good bargains available online. If you're coming to San Juan, try it!

My sister and I spent two nights here before going on our Caribbean cruise. It was perfect for us, and we will only stay here in the future. The ambience is just lovely. Vanessa makes the best drinks! The wine and cheese from 6-7 was a nice way to visit with others who are traveling. The staff is very willing to visit help you. The low carb breakfast was the best I have ever had! The tapas were also wonderful. It is very close the the Coach Outlet, which was nice. The front desk made our dinner reservation at Carli's and told us how to get there. Carli play the keyboard for the Beach Boys.....way to cool! We sat at the table closest to the piano. If you want to stay at this wonderfujl hotel, book early! I booked 6 months in advance. We visited with people who tried to say here, but it was full.

Room Tip: Higher floors have great views!
