“Perfect Wedding and Accommodations!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

El Convento helped us coordinate and put together our dream wedding! We cannot put in words how grateful we are to have Ruben Alvarez and his staff help plan the wedding. Many guests thought the food was the best they've ever had at wedding. In addition to the wedding itself, our guests and ourselves really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. Everyone from the front desk and valet are so helpful and carry a positive attitude. We look forward to our next visit to Puerto Rico and plan on staying at El Convento again!

Words can't express how thankful we are to the team at El Convento for making our wedding day a night to remember. The historic, and charming hotel is truly a spectacular site and was the perfect venue for our magical and truly memorable wedding. The architecture, and setting wowed our guests and was the perfect backdrop for an amazing wedding in beautiful Old San Juan.

We can't say enough about Ruben, Milagros and their team for their top notch customer service, and kindness. The wait staff and bartenders were amazing -- showing our guests how to have fun island style.

We can't wait to come back to Puerto Rico again. It will forever be a special place for Dave and I -

Thanks again to all our new friends at Hotel El Convento.

Warm regards,

Mel and Dave

My wife and I planned a brief vacation in Puerto Rico. We wanted to be in Old San Juan to explore the local restaurants, shops, and forts. After reading the reviews of various hotels in the area, we determined that Hotel el Convento would be the ideal spot for a romantic, luxurious getaway. To make it a special occasion, we booked the Pablo Cassales suite, an $800/night splurge.

We arrived at the hotel a bit early and understood that the room wouldn’t be ready until 3:00 PM. Still, it was inexcusable that it took until 3:40 to get us into our room and another half hour to receive our luggage.

What was more disconcerting was the condition of the suite. We knew this was an older hotel but this “luxurious” room has not been updated or well-maintained for quite some time. It was also poorly cleaned. There was very few of the basic amenities that would be found in quality hotels. The bathroom was of cheap motel-grade size and quality. Having stayed in high-grade hotels in several states and countries, this room would not have been a bargain at half the price.

The hotel occupancy appeared to be light during our stay. Nevertheless, staffing of the hotel was an issue. Since there is no concierge desk, everything must be done through the staff at the front desk. While they were also polite, the staff was overwhelmed. Follow-up was disappointing and one got the impression that management was not present. There seemed to be quite a few people registering complaints or showing frustration with hotel-related issues.

There is a daily complimentary offering of wine and cheese on the third floor. It is a nice treat and something not to be taken for granted. Due to lack of oversight, the value of this generous amenity is diminished. The food and wine is plentiful at the very beginning of the event, but beware. Show up a few minutes after the event begins and the table is “picked clean”. The staff does not keep up with demand.

The hotel has a beautiful bar in the lobby and we chose to take advantage of the facility. Again, staffing was an issue. We noticed customers coming to the bar from various tables because the wait staff was not making regular rounds. We were also surprised that a high-end bar like this would have such a severely limited selection of wines. Getting and paying our bill proved to be a challenge.

Old San Juan is a charming area. The people in the town are friendly and they have a respect for tourism as an important part of the economy. El Convento is centrally located and could be the gem of Old San Juan. Sadly, it fails in that regard.

Hotel Quality: As my wife put it, it's more upscale B&B than luxury hotel. Rooms are small but spacious. Housekeeping 2x a day. Most views are of the city or the channel where the ships doc, so don't think you'll be seeing vistas. The hotel is old stone and stucco with a large courtyard. Pool area: very small pool (like an oversized hot tub) and a jacuzzi. If you want a real pool experience, take advantage of the reciprocity with La Concha hotel in Condado. Common areas are great. 6pm wine and cheese reception is casual; wine choice are very good. Location is 5-10 minute walk from most everything in Old San Juan. In-house restaurants were good, not great. Breakfast was best meal; recommend elsewhere for drinks or dinner...you'll get a better deal. Parking is $20/day in 24-hour staffed lot across the street next to cathedral; taxis are always available there too.

Staff Quality: Cannot say enough great things about the staff here. A stuck door to the Juliet balcony lead to a better room, no questions asked. Every person we dealt with was kind and thoughtful. When I mentioned it was a belated honeymoon, we had a bottle of cava and chocolates in our room that night.

Bottom line: Fantastic for couples who want an active vacation in San Juan...walk to shops, bars, and restaurants...will get that here. Upscale, but not luxurious. Highly attentive staff. Families or those who want to be pampered (spa, beach, pool) may want to consider staying elsewhere.

We arrived at the height of El Festival de San Sebastian, so it was a little difficult to get here. Once we arrived it was like a little slice of heaven surrounded by the chaos of a street party.

All the rooms are different and we loved our that was right off the pool/wine hour area. The pool is little more than a dipping pool, but it's enough to cool off at the end of the day. When there's not a street party, the hotel is within easy access of the main city, and of course, if you are there for Old San Juan, it's perfect. The food was good, but there are much better places in the city. Wine hour is relaxing and the view from the roof is beautiful.

Was here for a very quick trip to San Juan (literally on the ground for 12 hours). As a Tablet hotel charging about $400 a night for a deluxe room, I expected a more polished experience. The hotel was certainly charming, and in a perfect location. But the room was perhaps a bit disappointing. The room wasn't particularly clean or well appointed, the bathroom was a bit dated, and everything was a touch grimy (I know, it's an old convent...). And, the internet didn't work.

I also paid more for an upgraded view, but only really saw a wall and the top of the awning above my window.

The food in the restaurant (just breakfast) was alright -- not memorable. The service was a touch slow, but no real complaints.

The one real surprise was when I received the bill, the total taxes were about 30% of my room rate. Obviously, not the hotel's fault, but plan to add 30% to your room charge if you're staying in San Juan.

All in all, probably the best choice in San Juan if you want to be in the old city and nice for a night -- but don't expect a super-luxurious stay. I give it a 5 for location, 4 for charm, and a 3 as a hotel.

My family, 25+ people, stayed at Hotel El Convento for a wedding at the Hotel, which was beautiful in every way. Our stay was superb, the service was outstanding, the facility is clean, beautiful, well maintained, and the staff were absolutely top notch. We extended our stay for almost two weeks and the staff began to know us by name and greeted us as though we were family and belonged in the hotel as a regular fixture. We felt it was such a privilege to stay in such a unique, beautiful, class place with such a friendly, warm, classy group of staff and managers.

Room Tip: The three rooms I saw were all the same, beautiful and clean.
