Last time we stayed at el Convento was 14 years ago and things have changed considerably for the best. There are multiple restaurants and great new interior spaces with views of the city. While the pool is very small the views from the fourth floor are great. If your budget will allow it I highly recommend staying here.

This is probably the best hotel in old San Juan. Great location. Nice clean rooms. The staff are usually helpful. Hotel food is okay, but we typically eat out anyway. Old San Juan offers some fun places to eat and relax, most of which are within easy walking distance of the hotel. The daily complimentary wine and cheese receptions are a nice touch (better than nothing). We usually start with this wine reception before heading out for drinks and dinner. Lastly, the hotel has this very small but cute pool on top of the building. It's very small, but just what you need to refresh after a long day in the sun. Overall, we would certainly return and recommend it to friends.

I really enjoyed our stay at El Convento and cannot wait to return. Granted we were there for on Honeymoon so we may have a different perspective - although I doubt it would be very different otherwise. They offer a complimentary happy hour from 6-7 every night with wine, cheese, crackers, and grapes. The place is clean and in a great location. Not overly expensive for the quality. I would recommend it. I'll add pictures soon.

My wife and I chose the perfect place for our 48th anniversary and my 75th birthday--a retreat from the whirl of Washington in a convent, The Convent, actually: El Convento. And we found
it a peaceful refuge, indeed, with gracious surroundings and comfortable rooms with beds that gave us lots of rest for the next day's hikes through old San Juan's blue-cobbled historic and scenic streets. With the help of warm and well-informed hostesses, we made the best use of our time in terms of schedules and sites and restaurants and events. The staff throughout was attentive and cordial. Don't miss the tapas bar--try the Pulpo! I could go on and on about the hotel and the town. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed here. We'll be back for 53 and 80!

Room Tip: Our room, no. 512, was perfect, with a view of the water and a reliable breeze to greet us after wa...

Great location, friendly, helpful staff...felt like we were in a family-run luxury hotel. Our room was beautiful with a view overlooking Old Town San Juan. You can also visit their sister properties if you want to hang out at the beach for the day. This is THE spot for us whenever we visit San Juan again...but will stay 2-3 nights next time instead of 1. It's a beautiful hotel!!

Having stayed in El Viejo San Juan a couple of times, I was intrigued to try this hotel this past summer. It was great. Our bedroom and sitting area were decorated with antiques and had comfortable, welcoming personality. Our bathroom was top notch modern, which we appreciated. The tapas restaurant on site has great food and great service. It's al fresco. I've seen reviews mentioning the heat of the oudoor tapas restaurant. My advice: if you don't like heat, look for a spot on the map to vacation that isn't in the Caribbean. Luxurious bedding, linens and a great big walk in closet to hide suitcases from pinkie toes made this room even better. Old San Juan is nothing but crazy walking so if you are looking for beachside lounging on your vacation, Old San Juan should be just a night or two of your trip. Also, service in Puerto Rico is generally not that great but at this hotel, the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

We stayed at El Convento at the end of June. It is a lovely, small hotel with well appointed rooms and quaint decor. The bed was comfy, the room cool and quiet. The restaurants were all excellent, but the Tapas bar was very hot as there is no AC. The main dining restaurant is also not air conditioned, but at the times we ate there or had a drink at the bar it was rainy and cooler. Food was great at each of the three restaurants. The staff was fabulous - everyone was friendly and helpful. the hotel is located right in the heart of Old San Juan and within walking distance to most of the places you'd like to visit. Day trips can be arranged through the front desk. The wine and cheese reception each evening at 6pm was a great way to meet other guests and prepare from the evening out. There is coffee, tea and water available 24/7, and the coffee is wonderful. There were some issues with the hot water on occasion and the hot tub needed to be repaired during our visit, but I would definitely return to El Convento if I visited Puerto Rico again.

Room Tip: some guests complained that the elevator was noisy, but we were nowhere near it so it was a non-issu...
