Most leisure travels might like this hotel if you are willing to accept some discomfort, staff is usually helpful, and location is great if you want to be in Old San Juan, but not recommended for business. Internet does not work consistently in the hotel. This is my fifth stay here and the problem remains regardless of the room. Mosquitos in the restaurant will be present most of the time, so bring your repellant or ask for one.

Room Tip: I usually would rate breakfast and cleanliness much better, but the fact that I received and additio...

Dear Mr. Francisco F,

Thank you for your review of our hotel. I regret that you were inconvenienced by experiencing difficulties with our internet service in your room. I certainly understand how important internet service is, especially when you are conducting business in the island. Please accept our most sincere apologies for the inconvenience.
I was glad to learn that yesterday both Judith Andujar (Director of Sales) and Osvaldo Soler (Revenue Manager) met with you and offered to change you to another room with internet service. I will meet with our information technology specialist in order to find a solution and avoid reoccurrence.
Once again thank you for your stay and please give us the opportunity to continue serving you in the future.

Best regards,

From a very warm welcome from Annette at Reception to a charming room with Aveda products to a thoughtful "club room" with complimentary refreshments, this period gem in an unbeatable historic location, has it all. Reserve early for week-end stays, as it gets booked up in advance.

We had a layover in San Juan and decided to spend the night at the El Convento. Wow...I wish we had more time to spend at the El Convento. This boutique hotel is rich with history and charming as can be. The nightly wine reception was a fantastic way to start the evening and dinner on the first floor courtyard area was superb. Our only regret is that we did not have more time. Do yourself a favor and stay at the El Convento.

Room Tip: Our room on the first floor off the couryard/restaurant/bar area was surprisingly quiet (double door...

We were excited and thrilled to have booked a stay at this hotel due to the high ratings. We arrived at 11am; exhausted from driving all over from getting lost, the hot weather, etc. We were told check-in was not until 3pm. So we waited downstairs, in the courtyard of the hotel. It was a nice courtyard, but there was no air-conditioning since it was semi-outdoors, and there were mosquitoes. We came to the front desk 3 times, asking if our room was ready, hoping for an earlier check-in,but we had to wait about 4 hours on a dirty couch in the hot, mosquito-infested courtyard.

Once we did check in, they gave us a key to access the hotel guest lounge upstairs. The lounge has a patio, an air-conditioned room, computer with wi-fi access, and beverages. It was great!

What bugged us was that the next morning at 9am, we met a nice couple who had NOT checked in, but was given access to the upstairs lounge while the waited for their room to be ready. We felt that this was a big time double standard! We waited 4 hours the day previous, checked with them 3 times, and they offered us NOTHING each time, no access. The very next morning, we met this caucasian couple who was enjoying a glass of wine on the upstairs patio, while they waited for their room.

We feel that we were not given the same treatment because we are Asian. We pay American dollars and expect the same treatment; and for that, we are furious. I am not the assertive, complaining type; but I expressed this to a staff member at the front desk, but no comment, note, apology was given.

Once you do check in, the hotel and amenities are great. But this impersonal, unfair treatment really ruined it for us.

So, if you are not white, and you arrive early, remember to be assertive and push for a key to access the actual hotel area upstairs while you wait for check-in. You don't have to wait in the hot courtyard downstairs for 4 hours like we did.

Mr. Sun&funtraveler,

I was concerned when I read your review about your recent stay. We work very hard to provide excellent service to all of our guests regardless of their color or nationality and until now never have received a review or comment like this one. I recognize that we made a mistake by not offering you access to the guests private areas while your room came available but please understand that it was a honest oversight. I am sure that the guest service agent that assisted you upon arrival did not willfully intend to make you feel uncomfortable.

Please contact me at your convenience. I would like to have the opportunity to speak with you in an effort to change your ill feelings towards our hotel and staff as I would be honored to have you as our guest in the future in order to provide you with the service experience we are customarily known for.

Respectfully,

Efrain Rosa

We stayed for five days and very much enjoyed this lovely small hotel with amazing features. Of course, the staff was highly attentive and charming and the service excellent, but it is a beautiful building. The arches, the interior courtyard that the rooms overlook, the courtyard restaurant and bar, the heavy wooden staircases, the tiles on stair risers and on the floors, the marble shower and tub enclosure all made the hotel elegant. It's a place of another era, and we love the ambience. There is a manager's complimentary wine and cheese party each day from 6 to 7 on a patio overlooking the plaza across the street and the church, which allowed guests to mingle and trade suggestions regarding sights and restaurants. The guests we met were honeymooners and older travelers mostly from mainland US although some were from as far away as India. Hotel El Convento is on our list of top hotels of old world grandeur. And even though it's not near the beach the hotel provides transportation and access to a sister hotel on Condado Beach for those wanting sand and swimming. We walked everywhere to the shops and to the restaurants. The streets are too narrow for me to try to negotiate and there is a cab stand across the street.

The manager knows how to run a hotel.
The building itself is a great reason to stay there. It's a bit pricy but if you get the right room it's worth the price. I have some unfinished business both in San Juan and the hotel. So the rest of the review is yet to be done. Best way to get around is to rent a motor bicycle and see the whole town. Couple days in the old city's all you need.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel El Convento. We had a lovely room on the 2nd floor. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. We enjoyed eating at the restaurant in the courtyard of the hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The sitting area/patio on the 3rd floor was a great place to enjoy breakfast or a cocktail. The rooftop pool was more like the size of a hot tub, but the view from up there was great. The fitness center was pretty small, but functional. The proximity to the sights of Old San Juan was perfect. If we return to Old San Juan, we will stay at El Convento!
