“A top hotel in a beautiful building”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

We stayed for five days and very much enjoyed this lovely small hotel with amazing features. Of course, the staff was highly attentive and charming and the service excellent, but it is a beautiful building. The arches, the interior courtyard that the rooms overlook, the courtyard restaurant and bar, the heavy wooden staircases, the tiles on stair risers and on the floors, the marble shower and tub enclosure all made the hotel elegant. It's a place of another era, and we love the ambience. There is a manager's complimentary wine and cheese party each day from 6 to 7 on a patio overlooking the plaza across the street and the church, which allowed guests to mingle and trade suggestions regarding sights and restaurants. The guests we met were honeymooners and older travelers mostly from mainland US although some were from as far away as India. Hotel El Convento is on our list of top hotels of old world grandeur. And even though it's not near the beach the hotel provides transportation and access to a sister hotel on Condado Beach for those wanting sand and swimming. We walked everywhere to the shops and to the restaurants. The streets are too narrow for me to try to negotiate and there is a cab stand across the street.

The manager knows how to run a hotel.
The building itself is a great reason to stay there. It's a bit pricy but if you get the right room it's worth the price. I have some unfinished business both in San Juan and the hotel. So the rest of the review is yet to be done. Best way to get around is to rent a motor bicycle and see the whole town. Couple days in the old city's all you need.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel El Convento. We had a lovely room on the 2nd floor. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. We enjoyed eating at the restaurant in the courtyard of the hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The sitting area/patio on the 3rd floor was a great place to enjoy breakfast or a cocktail. The rooftop pool was more like the size of a hot tub, but the view from up there was great. The fitness center was pretty small, but functional. The proximity to the sights of Old San Juan was perfect. If we return to Old San Juan, we will stay at El Convento!

This hotel had everything we were looking for in OSJ. El Convento is small, and we knew some of the employees by name by the time we left. We stayed on the 5th floor and had a lovely view of the bay in the distance. Listed below are some of the things that make El Convento special:
Historic décor, Puerto Rican candy at the service desk, water and fruit provided 24/7, rooftop pool and Jacuzzi, Excellent customer service, Comfortable bed and linens, topnotch bath amenities, location....well, I could go on and on.
Be aware, if you are looking for a large, modern, beachside hotel with huge rooms and baths, this is not the place for you. Personally, I could go many places near home and enjoy that. El Convento is unique to Old San Juan.....an unforgettable experience!

We spent 3 nights at the hotel and were very happy. The location in the heart of old San Juan is perfect; close to restaurants, shopping, sight seeing and night life. The amenities at the hotel were great from the large towels to the turn down service. Our room was very quiet with a bay view All staff was friendly and helpful. A wonderful time there.

Just returned from a 4 night stay at the El Convento, and I couldn't be happier. If you are looking for a hotel in the heart of Old San Juan, this is it! The rooms were quaint, and well appointed. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The pool is not big, but I had read about that in other reviews prior to going. The 6 pm complimentary wine & cheese is a welcome treat after a day of touring the area.

Booking this hotel was even a good experience! We had made reservations through another travel site and realized they had put us in a room with one bed and we needed two. So we called the hotel directly and they gave us an even better deal on a room! They also suggested that for our stay in Old San Juan that we didn't need to rent a car.
The location couldn't be any better! We arrived on a Sunday and the room was not ready. We got complimentary sangrias at the bar while we waited. Since it was Sunday the ladies at the front desk recommended we go down to a street fair that's only on Sundays. We had great food and it was only a short walk.
We stayed on the second floor and got the high ceilings. The rooms are very unique and really give you an authentic feel. Wine and cheese hour was enjoyed each night and the resteraunts within the hotel were delicious as well. There's a tapa restaurant, a pizzeria and a patio restaurant.
The staff was awesome and great in recommending activities. We rode the trolleys which were free and convenient. We also took the 50 cent ferry to the Bacardi factory. The view from the rooftop is amazing and the openness of the hotel is breathtaking. Definitely the place to stay in Old San Juan!
