“Perfect hotel in Old San Juan”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013 via mobile

Our party of four stayed in two rooms for one night. I was a little hesitant when I booked due to the High price but it was worth every dime. The location is perfect. We were able to walk everywhere that we wanted to go for sightseeing and for meals. The parking across the street was extremely convenient. The view from the rooms was beautiful. The open courtyard was amazing and gave the hotel a very romantic feel. The room was smaller but we expected that in a historic hotel. They were extremely clean with wonderful towels and aveda products. The hotel provides turn down service with freah towels and chocolates at night.

Breakfast on the patio the next morning was excellent but slow. Even in the rain they found a place for us. I would not recommend if you were in a hurry. The Caribbean Benedict was amazing with mashed plantains and pork.

Overall, we loved it. I would stay here again with no hesitation.

Reading various reviews, I am a bit puzzled, because while the hotel is nice, there were a few things we experienced differently from some of the ravers. Our room (#313) which was about $300 had the tiniest bathroom I have ever seen almost anywhere. Our room was nice enough, but not fancy or luxurious at all, and maybe it wasn't intended to be. It was very quiet tho, except for noisy plumbing. Loved coffee always available. Cheese and wine nightly is a nice touch. Did not enjoy tapas at El Picateo and as a result did not eat other meals at the hotel. Location of hotel is excellent and staff helpful and accommodating.

You really can't get a better hotel in Old San Juan. The location is incredible and the highlights are never-ending.

The highlights:
1. Exceptional property - it's simply beautiful and the rooms, restaurants, common areas are wonderful. They have kept the old-world charm while adding modern conveniences like sound-proof doors and windows. This makes for a PEACEFUL night's sleep.

2. The location - Nestled on a little square in the heart of Old San Juan, there are dozens of places to shop and eat within a 10 or 15 minute walk. The closer you get to the pier, the more restaurants and shops stay open later in the evening.

3. The hotel itself - I have hardly experienced a staff who is more helpful and courteous. They had a lot of patience with my Spanish :) The staff (especially Valeria and Annette) was always prepared and willing to recommend a restaurant or activity. The wine reception for guests was top notch. No boxed wine or bad cheese - it was a first class way to end the day. The courtyard is beautiful, too. It's like staying in a museum where each room tells a story!

Our experience in general:
1. We walked.... a LOT. Being in the old city center there is ample opportunity to walk just about everywhere. We rented a car for other reasons, but one is not needed if you plan to stay mostly within OSJ. We actually took a stroll to the nearest public beach (Tercer Milenios) which was over 2 miles away! It was a haul, to say the least.

2. Eat breakfast at La Cafeteria Mallorca! Off of La Calle San Francisco, this awesome diner serves fantastic breakfast for a bargain, too. We ate there nearly every morning of our 5-day trip.

3. Take advantage of their sister property "La Concha" - Located in Condado (a quick 10 minute drive or so from OSJ), this hotel is exceptional. With a letter from El Convento, they invite you in to take advantage of all their amenities including their private beach and pools. It was gorgeous and the food their is delicious.

I would whole-heartedly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in Old San Juan. Just keep in mind, this is not a beach-front property! If you have realistic expectations for what Old San Juan is, there is no better place to stay.

This has to be the best spot to see Old San Juan from. My wife and I had a great 3 night stay and loved the "old world charm" of this hotel on our way to Tortola (for the vacation of a lifetime!!!).
Be sure to enjoy the tapas and the sangria!
We will be back.

I can't say enough about Hotel El Convento and its marvelous staff. The historic building is beautiful and equipped with all the modern conveniences in a classic Spanish colonial setting. Guest rooms are comfortable with very spacious bathrooms. The courtyard patio houses a restaurant and bar, and you'll never want to leave! Luis makes the best mojitos this side of Havanna, and Joe insures you leave very happy! The food in the Patio is superb for all meals. All the staff is very warm and welcoming. I'm so excited to return very soon!

Room Tip: Rooms 508-511 great ocean views!

I am so glad my husband and I started our honeymoon at Hotel El Convento. It is right in the heart of Old San Juan, we walked to the forts and all the restaurants we wanted to go to. No need for taxis. I really couldn't get over how close we were to everything I wanted to do in OSJ. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. We got tapas at the restaurant soon after arriving and they were fantastic.
Because we stayed here on our honeymoon, I originally booked a Deluxe Queen room, and then when wedding costs started spiraling, in a hasty moment of budget-stress I changed the room to two twins. I don't know what I was thinking, I meant to change it to a full-size bed. When we got to our room and saw the two twin beds we knew this was not going to work for our honeymoon. Again, I take full blame for booking the room, but we called downstairs and asked if they had anything else available and they changed our room for us no problem. We LOVED the room we got, too. I was very impressed with the service.
The plunge pool and jacuzzi on the roof are a great spot to relax and provides a great view of OSJ. Because we were on our honeymoon, they surprised us with a bottle of champagne and rose petals on the bed one night. We took the champagne up to the roof. It was really romantic.
They also have a sister hotel in a trendier part of San Juan. If you ask the front desk, they will provide a pass for you. We took a taxi over there, the hotel is on a beach and has a really nice pool area with couches and restaurant service. So that is a nice option, too.
If you are looking to truly enjoy Old San Juan, I can't imagine a better place than Hotel El Convento.

My brother was married here just a few weeks ago, and what a unique place it was to celebrate! Location is perfect- a real gem in old San Juan, steps away from the Fort, which is a must to check out. Food was fantastic, and unique to the area. Staff was friendly and professional, and dealt with all of our random requests. The free wine and cheese every evening was a nice bonus!

Only negative was the pool/ hot tub area, which was quite small considering the hotel is quite far from the beach. (But its sister property, La Concha, was amazing- just a cab ride away.)

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with good natural light. Some of them are quite dark, depending on the wind...
