If you want to re-live the Spanish colonial era with it's architecture and glamour, you have to walk the Spanish brick paved roads of the Old San Juan. This is a magical place to just walk, buy one of the freshly grated ice cones called "piragua" and enjoy the scenery. Locals are very friendly, and I would suggest asking the shop owners where to go. Old San Juan is a small San Francisco, NYC or Chicago which means everyone has their own specific charming place they call their favorite. There are the foodie enthusiasts which will tell you to buy a pina colada, the history buffs which would tell you to go to El Morro, animal lover which will tell you to go to the Save a Gato (Cat) sanctuary, etc....

Get there EARLY (6AM) watch the sunrise, have a coffee and get lost in the charm of Old San Juan.

I’m from Bayamon Puerto Rico but live in the U.S. The City of San Juan is one of my favorite places. I love history. I recommend this City to everyone who love history. Be prepare to walk up and down the hills of El Viejo San Juan. The City provides free transportation. You can decide on the green bus that takes you around the city main attractions or the open air tram that takes you everywhere. Whatever is you selection, definitely you have to visit El Castillo de San Felipe Del Morro and El Castillo de San Cristobal.

A very nice place to walk around and see the historic town. A very interesting and colorful place. Certainly visually very appealing with the colorful houses and their doors. A shoppers paradise with a lot of local artists wares available for purchase. The place is very crowded when a cruise ship docks in town. If you are driving into town, there are plenty of paid parking garages where you can park and cover the entire city by walking. Would advice you to take the time and walk the streets and find your own secrets and good places to eat. Plenty of variety of cuisines to suit everyones palate.

Wonderful all year round! There are great places just off the beaten trail to eat. Only negative is every shop has the exact same touristy gifts, but not being one to buy those things, this is a great city to explore and walk around. There is a butterfly display art gallery/shop that carries absolutely stunning art using butterflies from around the world! Catch up on Puerto Rico's history and feel the culture in Old San Juan.
