Old San Juan was very pretty - a nice walk but extremely expensive to eat. Stopped for lunch and a bowl of vegetarian stew was 16.00! The Castle was beautiful and views were awesome. There are information desks all over to help you find what you are looking for. I was there at a time when cruise ships were not, so there were not many people around.

After experiencing Puerto Rican highway driving & many narrow narrow town roads, we booked an Old San Juan tour with Club Cala in Palmas del Mar where we were staying. ( About 1 hour drive) Good move!!! For $65 each, we could sit back & let someone else do the driving! Tour of Barcardi factory was included. The VERY narrow roads of old San Juan were not meant for todays' cars & vans! Somehow, our young driver maneuvered the van through streets & around vehicles that were inches apart without any problems! He was so used to driving here! VERY glad WE did not drive! After a tour of the highlights of Old San Juan with bits of history & photo taking at each stop, we were dropped off for lunch & given 2 hours to tour on our own till we were picked up at 5:00 pm. I was pleasantly surprised at the lovely brightly colored buildings that lined the streets with their shades of yellow, orange, blue, & purple. Many had Spanish wrought iron balconies that added to the decor. Loved the blue brick roads, too. ( see photo ) But, wish they did not have "American" stores like Walgreen & Marshalls. They seemed so out of place. Visited many souvenir type gift shops & liked the man taking photographs of visitors with his parrots on their shoulders. Many restaurant to choose. Large cruise ships were seen docked down by the harbor. Wish we had come on the weekend, especially Sundays, when many more art vendors are on the streets - a much more festive atmosphere. If visiting Puerto Rico, don't miss seeing this charming old world city!!!

The old city of San Juan is a must! simply walking around has it's spanish romantic charm, This part of the city has great shopping options (outlet stores), lovely restaurants and bars all over and not to mention the historical part .

Old San Juan is a photographers dream! From the forts to the statuesque cemetery to the narrow streets and architecture, it is beautiful! You could take all day just looking at the statues and buildings, not to mention the great shops both local and high end and the local flavor restaurants. The fee to tour both forts is very reasonable and well worth the time spent there. We only spent 2 days there after a cruise but wished we could have done much more. I don't recommend driving because of the narrow roads and lack of parking so bring your walking shoes and see it all! There was a craft show in the square down town the day were there so we were able to browse that as well. The local shops are quaint and full of beautiful items you won't find just anywhere. There is something, both food and shopping, for most tastes. I would recommend touring Old San Juan to anyone able to walk, it is well worth your time!

take the free trolley and wear comfortable shoes. If you can, go down by the port where all the cruise ship comes in and walk around. It's cobblestone paved streets so make sure shoes are comfortable and walk everywhere. There are also a lot of places to eat and drink so make sure you try to sample as many restuarants as you can.
