Much has already been said however you need at least a full day to see the basics. Love the colonial residences, historical bldgs, darling bistro-like restaurants. Bustling. Grab a free trolley and take a tour see the highlights in a town chock full of them..walk the promenade heading west down Princesa to the fab "Raices" fountain, then walk north around the wall to see the San Juan gate/door.

Old San Juan is an interesting, picturesque, colonial city built by the Spanish. It is very easy to navigate on foot, and has great local-flavor restaurants, shopping, artisan crafts, and historic building and cathedrals. It is worth spending a day to explore.

We did a lot of walking after we park our car in the public parking area building. We don't know about the trolley until we saw one. A lot of little restaurants, little shops , nice building etc.. Took the trolley to go to the Capitol and we missed it. It should be nice if the driver of the trolley will say something every stops he makes. As for first timer, we won't know, as we were seated in the second tram in the back. Other cities we visited they tell the tourist every stop the made but not here in San Juan,Puerto Rico. So we have to walked back and see the place, after we asked some locals.

City was nice with cobblestones in some parts but uneven, view was beautiful , interesting building.

It's just a tropical paradise. It has everything you can hope for in a vacation. Beautiful views of the ocean, old Spanish forts, excellent food, and cobblestone streets that lead you to the heart of a vibrant city, I never miss a visit to Old San Juan when I'm in Puerto Rico. Everyone is friendly and eager to point you in the right direction. We had some amazing food from the local restaurants as well as the mobile vendors. Grab a bite to eat from one of these vendors and soak in the scenery at Pigeon Park. You may even see a couple of wild Parakeets while you're there. Make sure you take advantage of the free bus and trolley system while you're there.

Get the map for the free trolleys so you can see it all. We also took the ferry across the bay to do the Bacardi tour. History, shopping, bars and restaurants and free trolley rides to get around. Can't beat it.
