If you've come for the beaches or to depart and return from a cruise, you must make the time to visit this jewel. You'll notice there are more than 700 pictures submitted and with good reason. At every turn it is memorable! The architecture is beautifully preserved (quite a job in an area often threatened by hurricanes!), well maintained. Folks are friendly, the churches are beautiful inside and they welcome you to step in. We bought some pastries at a local bakery and they were WONDERFUL! Good deal of little touristy shops, but right next to one would be a gallery with unique treasures. Lots of art and they will ship if you wish. Go to the Farmacia and get some Alto Grande coffee in the grocery section. It is about 1/2 price of other places. This is the coffee served at Kensington Palace and at the Vatican. Wonderful, rich. A great gift for someone at home for only $7.99.

Loved the old city, cobblestone roads, and castles. The food was great everywhere we went. The locals were very nice and helpful. Going back sometime soon to visit Isle of Culebra (:

Traffic
We stayed outside of San Juan and came to Old San Juan twice. First time was on a Sunday around 2 pm and the traffic was manageable. We left around 6:30 pm and traffic clog had cleared by then, so I got the impression that weekend afternoons are best time to visit. Because we came back Monday morning after 10 am thinking that would avoid the traffic but we were dead wrong. It was a painful drive at the speed of 0 for hours.
Parking
Parking decks are available on 1. Advice is to skip the first deck which is considerable higher priced than the one that follows.
Old San Juan
Great tourist place, with colorful building, stone streets, nice balconies, and there are a couple of squares one north west of the parking (between parking and El Morro) where there are lots of pigeons and bubbles and the fountain that represents four seasons and another one near Fort San Cristobal. Lots of options to choose from to eat. Sit down ones are crazy expensive. But if you look hard enough, you can find cheaper alternatives. There is an souvenir outlet on 1 right across from the cheaper parking which has great collection. Again there will be no shortage or art, or gift shops and language will not be a problem in Old San Juan. It was time well-spent. Reserve 3-4 hours for leisure stroll, and check out the shops, and grab a bit to eat. Add more time if you want to check out El Morro, and Fort San Cristobal. Best to divide all this in two days,

We totally steeped ourselves in the culture and colors of the area.
Everywhere I looked there was something interesting to see and appreciate....even the decaying facades were beautiful.
Loved mingling with the local people, hearing their language and studying their faces.

Besides being an outstandingly gorgeous place, the people were super friendly and helpful, the food was amazing everywhere we ate, the available beers and wine was unlimited, the weather was fantastic, spectacular beaches. Did we like it? YOU BET! Would we go back? In a heart beat.
