“The best, authentic Italian Cuisine in the Caribbean.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2012

Il Bacaro Venezia in Old San Juan is an authentic Italian Cuisine in a quaint setting, with an excellent variety, great service (attentive & genuine but not pushy), and a small bar that packs a solid punch. The wine list is more than sufficient for those wishing a more challenging dining experience. This is an excellent choice if you are looking for a romantic dinner that won't hurt your wallet. Beware of the beautiful Puerto Rican ladies who frequent this establishment to gawk at the manager who has all of the charm an characteristics of an Italian James Bond!

“Good food, service needs attention”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2012

"Bacaro" is a good local italian restaurant in Old San Juan, and popular among residents. It has the usual mix of pastas, antipasti, fish and seafoods, veal and pork, etc., well prepared and at reasonable prices, and also a decent wine list also with reasonable prices. Unfortunately our experience mirrored what some other reviewers have noted: misunderstood orders, and mix-up with the bill. Instead of eggplant parmigiana we were brought chicken parmigiana, then waited about 10 minutes for the eggplant.

We weren't billed for the chicken, but when the bill came the manager noticed that they had forgotten to include our salads on the bill. He came back with a new bill which for some reason didn't have the corrected total shown. I had to add the amounts myself to be sure we had it right this time, but neither the waiter nor manager seemed interested in clearing-up the confusion.

Conclusion: quite good food, but don't expect everything to be right the first time.

“Italian gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2012

This place offers a great and cozy atmosphere, as well as excellent service and great cuisine. As soon as you arrive you are immediately greeted either by the owner or one of his staff, making you feel right at home. For starters, I decided to try the polenta for the first time and I immediately became a fan. The seasoning of the mushrooms and Italian sausage were just perfect. As the main dish I had the tuna with the capers sauce and pasta, which mas not on the menu, and I must say I didn't want the dish to end! It was very savory and the tuna was really fresh. For dessert, they had limoncello panna cotta, which had a very delicate taste, and for the perfect ending, Italian coffee. If you want to feel immediately transported to Italy, especially Venice, I definitely recommend this restaurant as an Italian gem. I can't wait to return and try the risottos!

“Must've been an off night...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2012

Unfortunately, our waiter misunderstood our order. We ordered three Risotto dishes which take a while to prepare.

We received only ONE Risotto...and two pasta dishes.

The owner offered his apology, the waiter looked completely confused and stupid us took their word for it that they'd "make the Risotto dishes right away". I say "stupid us" because I should have realized that Risotto takes 20 minutes, minimum.

What came out after 15 minutes was a SOUPY MESS! Two dishes of Risotto that clearly needed more time on the stove. How the owner let this out of the kitchen, I don't know. Not cool.

“Delicious food as well as very reasonable prices!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2012 via mobile

Il bacaro was fantastic and we would recommend it to anyone looking for Italian food in Old San Juan. The service was good and the food superb. Our group of 4 shared appetizers of the carpaccio and the torreta, which were both great but particularly the torreta. The boscaiola pasta as well as the scoglio pastas were delicious. The prices were very reasonable with main courses generally around $15. All of the 4 people in our group (2 locals and 2 visitors) would return in to this restaurant again.
