The food was excellent with very big portion sizes. SO GLAD that we each got an appetizer and then decided to share a meal - it was more than enough food for two!

We were recommended to this restaurant for paella but the restaurant is mostly a tapas bar and restaurant.

The paella is not the traditional classic paella. This special entree was too specialized and different from the traditional paella. The paella here was too smoky in taste. It seems the rice was cooked in the chirozo and not much saffron or there was too much chirozo in the meal.

The other selections had no accompaniments because they were served as tapas. The entrees were just the entree nothing else. If you are looking for a complete meal patronize the full size restaurant downstairs from the Patio Del Nispero in the El Convento Hotel.

Another problem with the restaurant is that the meals are served as they are ready and not simultaneously. Thus, two of us had our meals and were finished dining before the paella was served to the rest of us. This could be attributed to the fact that it is a tapas bar and not a full restaurant.

The other meals, except the paella, were tasty and good.

Patio del Nispero is located in Hotel El Convento. The restaurant is beautiful and situated on the first floor in a courtyard. We ate breakfast here and everything was good, but a bit overpriced. We knew that and wanted to eat here for the convenience and just because the restaurant is so pretty. If you are staying at the hotel give it a try for sure. The service is relaxed so if you need to get somewhere, I would make the server aware. If you are not staying at the hotel I would still consider wondering in and checking out the menus for lunch or dinner.

As with El Picoteo tapas restaurant which is on the mezzanine terrace of the hotel El Convento, the Pato del Nispero has a wonderful setting in the courtyard of a very old colonial building in Old San Juan. Service was very friendly and the casual atmosphere is relaxing, and bar sevice was fine. The simple lunch menu is a good idea, but as with Picoteo, the setting (and prices) would justify more attention to preparation and presentation.

The Puerto Rican special of the day was pork in a spicy guava sauce, served with rice and black beans. The pork was on the dry side and the sauce tasted like a sweet and sour barbecue sauce, not bad but not particularly spicy and I detected no trace of guava. The rice and beans were also a bit dry and probably had been prepared far ahead of time. This should have been a very nice dish but was let down by indifferent preparation and presentation.

Chicken served in a spinach wrap was much better, with a side of sweet plantain fries. Hotel guests looking for a quick and casual meal could do worse than choosing the Patio del Nispero, with its wonderful colonial courtyard setting - but as with El Picoteo, the setting calls for some upgrades to the menu and presentation.

The menu is puertorrican with an international flare. our server Melisa was wonderful and she was very pleasant. The plantain soup was great and the fish with tamarind sauce was a great choice.
