The fact that most of the tables are occupied by the locals lets you know that you are in the right place. It is the San Juan version of diner food. Breakfast is simple and good with a nice cafe leche (coffee with milk). We bought "Mallorcas" for the plane trip home which are wonderful sandwiches.

I was looking for La Bombonera, which appears to have closed for good, when I stumbled on this little dinner which was just as good as what I was looking for. The mallorcas are tasty sandwiches made with a soft, pressed bread sprinkled with confectionary sugar. Ask for your mallorca with Swiss cheese instead of American. Enjoy.

This place has got the best ham & cheese mallorca sandwiches. They were delicious and very inexpensive. Looking at what other customers were eating as well, it looked like the lunches were delicious as well (rice & beans, etc.)

On a glorious Tres Reyes Epiphany Sunday, walking Fortaleza and San Francisco, we searched for early breakfast before starting the day. We searched, and so were dozens of other tourists ... even though most establishments were closed as residents slept or attended Mass.

Mallorca however was open, and despite being packed, they were skilled at handling the crowds. And the crowds were obviously enjoying the experience. The breakfast was in a diner style, served by waiters in black uniform, efficient if silent in their manner. The food was traditional and the sort of thing you would find in Mama's kitchen - hearty, simple, delicious. Prices were excellent. And the baked goods available for takeout were a delight.

We went here for breakfast a couple times and it was sooo good. They have a pastry (Mallorca) that is unique to San Juan that is quite lovely. It's a lighly powder sugared pastry. I also ordered what the locals were eating which was this ham and cheese sandwich with a fried egg in the middle pressed like a panini. The locals dip this sandwich in the Puerto Rican coffee and I must say it was delicious this way. I recommend it
