“Wonderful find in Old San Juan”
Reviewed December 8, 2013

First trip to Puerto Rico. We just had time for an overnight before heading to Vieques. Wish I had realized how lovely this small hotel is and how interesting Old San Juan! I almost missed the entrance as we walked down the side street past El Convento where our taxi dropped us off. But once I saw the dramatic artwork through the windows,I knew I had arrived. Our room on the first floor courtyard was beautiful and comfortable, cozy, yes, but so pretty and the bathroom had nice modern glass pedestal sink, shower and a lovely antique basin and pitcher stand for accent. Staff were helpful, friendly and breakfast was simple, cereals, toast, juice, good coffee. Nice upper deck with lounge chairs and claw foot tubs. Maybe a few cats too many in the area, but we shooed them away. Lovely area to walk and walk.

I had high hopes for this quaint hotel but it fell short of expectations. Rooms are pricey in San Juan so if you prefer old world charm over convenience this may be a good pick. From the other reviews most people seemed to overlook it's shortcomings. Young staff is friendly and helpful but hotel is not for anyone expecting normal amenities. Rooms are dark and "breakfast " is a joke. Although it looks good on the surface the fit and finish is poor. You will probably need to remove clothes from your suitcase for stay which is a real pain. Breakfast consists of only cold, uncooked offerings like bread, jam, cereal and coffee. We had upper room and had to drag our suitcases up a narrow patio staircase. Room was cramped with no closet and funky shutters. Bed had legs that stuck out and both me and my wife almost broke our toes and knees on several occasions. Ice is served in a small cut glass container and kept in kitchen downstairs. You have to ask for each refill. Upper patio could be a plus but it is inhabited by several cats. It has no pool but rather 3-4 claw foot tubs which I couldn't figure out ? My wife hated this place and next time we stay in a beachfront hotel or pay a bit more and stay at El Convento next door. You can do Old San Juan in a day so it may be better to book hotel on the beach and take a cab for a day trip. Cute and cozy is nice but when you travel you also want normal amenities.

So much to say about this hotel, although the word hotel doesn't seem to apply since it feels more like it's your own home in Old San Juan. The location is ideal, within walking distance to everything, even the free trolley which will take you wherever you want to go. El Convento is next door, San Juan Cathedral is up the block and it's close to San Juan Gate. The rooms are beautifully furnished and the rooftop patio is a wonderful way to unwind and relax after a long day of sightseeing. Breakfast in the dining room is simple but sufficient. The people who work there are friendly and very helpful.
I have to mention the cats, they are everywhere. If you don't like cats, then you are better off staying out of OSJ entirely, but we were charmed by them and loved having them sit with us as we enjoyed coffee on the patio.
All in all, Villa Herencia was an "experience" that helped make our visit to OSJ perfect. We cannot wait to go back.

Room Tip: We were in Room 8 upstairs...just beautiful.

The hotel is very quaint. There are shops and restaurants within walking distance. The trolley is very close, which takes you around San Juan. There is a park just feet from the hotel which is nice and peaceful. The only negative is that they don't serve breakfast before 8am.

It is the second time we stay at Hotel Villa Herencia. Very charming place. This boutique hotel is in the heart of Old San Juan, yet you would think you are in the middle of the rain forest. It is very quiet and relaxing. You hear the "coquis" at night. You are walking distance to everything.
Our hostess Natalia was super nice. The continental breakfast is very good also, with seasonal fresh fruit, great coffee, orange juice, cereal, toast, granola and yogurt.

Keep in mind that Old San Juan has lots of stray cats wondering the streets. Some of them are also "guests" of the hotel. They launch on the upper deck.

The only thing I would recommend to the hotel staff is to keep an eye on the planters, for the kitties seem to use it as litter boxes.

Room Tip: Any room but the one next to the lobby.

My husband and I spent 5 nights here this month and it was absolutely perfect! It is stunningly gorgeous and absolutely serene! It was just my husband and I, and I wouldn't suggest bringing kids here. Very romantic! I loved the patio upstairs, right off from our room! Stay upstairs in Villa 8, it is beautiful!
