“Best Restaurant in Puerto Rico”
Reviewed September 9, 2012 via mobile

On its thirtieth anniversary, Compostela remains the gold standard of Puerto Rico Restaurants.  The front of the house staff is highly trained to strike a seamless balance between impeccable service without intruding.  Maximinio Rey's wine expertise and depth is a perfect complement to Jose Rey's cuisine.  The menu is succulent.  But rather than ordering from it, articulate your general preferences and let them surprise you.  You cannot go wrong.

“Very good wine and food but overpriced”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Way Overpriced even compared to well known NYC Restaurants, they sell wine retail but will charge an $18 fee to open and serve, food is good but small portions and expensive, service is good, only valet

“One of the best experience we've had is SJ area.”
Reviewed July 27, 2012

Very good wine list and wine selections. Very good service and waiter knowledge of the menu and wine list. Even the owner came to the table and had a nice talk about his wine selection and origin. The Tapas menu is what I like. Simple food with a very sophisticated touch that tells you they know what they are doing. The montaditos looked simple enough yet had one of the more complex flavors we've tasted in a while and had our table talking about it. Even had to ask the owner where the smoke flavor came from. Took some wines home from the bodega that we had that night. It has a big price tag, could be a bit lower.

“Unparalleled in San Juan”
Reviewed June 18, 2012

Compostela, or Bodegas Compostela which is its full name, is an excellent restaurant. Its menu is versatile, allowing you to concentrate on several tapas plates, or hors d'oeuvres, or on a combination of tapas and full entrees. Some of the tapas are octopus carpaccio, which is spectacularly tender and tasty, cuttlefish kebab with a local sauce and squid ink (pincho de sepia), cured Gravlax salmon with a citric sauce, and a Spanish omelette. Many of them can be paired and one will feel satisfied without feeling the pressure to order an entree, too. They also accommodate vegetarians to complete satisfaction. The fideua (arrossejat of angel hair) can be made with seafood, meat, or just vegetables, and either one is simply delicious. The entrees can be pricey, but the portions are generous, and the food is top-notch. Whether it is pork, lamb, or fish, Compostela cooks it to perfection.
A note on the wines. They serve the wines that they distribute and sell retail, so you may not find the wine list to be overly inclusive. Most of them are excellent, though, and they vary in price. Do consult with the maitre'd who is very knowledgeable. Some of the pricier wines are sublime, but if you do not want to pay $75-150 per bottle, you do not need to do so, and you will still be able to drink a very good wine. Ask! Service is always excellent.
