“Return to our Caribbean Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2014

Before you book any holiday, ask yourself what would make it special. If you want peace and quiet, a good selection of excellent food and drink with friendly helpful staff, in beautifully maintained gardens and unique individual rustic cottages, then you would be very hard pushed to find anywhere more perfect than the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Runaway Bay. We have just returned from our 9th consecutive yearly trip and of course we have already booked for our 10th visit next year.
This hotel is ideal for couples who are mature enough to make their own entertainment or for families with children aged 10 or under as there is a good Kids Club. However if you are seeking wild excitement or need to be entertained 24/7 we would suggest looking elsewhere as there is not a lot of this available here, thank goodness!
With regard to comments in other revues concerning the influx of French, it is rumoured that the ongoing arrangement is coming to an end this year. Hopefully this is true but if not, there is still plenty of room on the site to avoid them.
Although tipping is not supposed to happen, it is nice to reward the staff that help to make your holiday special, whether in the restaurants, the bars, or the cleaners. At the very least ,a please and thankyou go a long way to make them feel appreciated, unlike the French who appear to be very arrogant and ignorant in this respect.
As far as the trips go, there is a wide variety to choose from, but we would definitely not recommend the shopping trip to Ochos Rios as this is probably the biggest rip off of them all.
We hope that our comments have been helpful and if you do come to this resort you will be as pleased with it as we are. Would you return to the same place year after year if it wasn't really special?

Room Tip: Try to ensure you get a garden view cottage away from the main entertainments area and spend the add...

Our 3rd time in Jamaica. 1st time in this hotel. Clean and comfortable cottage on the beach. Food choice excellent. Nothing too much trouble for the staff. Check in very smooth. The grounds are pristine, the gardeners do an excellent job.(We were given a free upgrade to sister hotel in Mo Bay after a week. Nice hotel but Runaway Bay is better. )The Runaway Bay entertainment staff work non stop and earn every penny. Runaway Bay is a great place to stay. It is safe to walk about and meet the local people. Lots of little bars etc. Would definitely visit again.

We stayed at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean for two week from 13th March. Having booked this hotel and read some of the reviews we did have arrive with some trepidation, these however were fully dispelled once we arrived. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by considerate staff and nothing was too much trouble. We were staying in a garden cottage (no28) and felt at home straight away. It was large and spacious, very clean, everything you could need was there, the only slight thing to make it totally complete would be tea/coffee making facilities and a fridge in the room. The staff were all friendly and as stated previously nothing was too much trouble, a big thank you to out maid Yvonne who made us smile every evening with her towel creations on the bed. It was our anniversary whilst we were away and we received a complimentary bottle of champagne delivered to our room, which was lovely. All the staff from the waiters to the reception to the security were excellent and the animation team worked tirelessly to make sure everyone was having a good time. As stated in previous review there are a lot of French in the hotel, but the place is big enough to keep out of their way if required. The food was excellent with several choices and everything was of good quality. Both my husband and I have travelled to many countries, however this was our first time in Jamaica, we would have not hesitation in recommending both Jamaica and this hotel to anyone else. We both say that it was our best holiday ever and am currently looking at returning later this year.

We went at the begining of december before the start of french season, and when you first see the the decameron you think oh dear! But settle in and soak up the ambience and you will love it, no really love it, the staff are second to none, curtis you were fantastic. We have have stayed at much nicer places but would go back here tomorrow (excluding french season) nothing french going on when we were there! No seriously its good yes the entertainment can be loud just go to the jetty bar and chill out there , we were also lucky and met some lovely people there which made it all the better.

Room Tip: Just ask for a cottage away from stage area.

I went there with my partner and son. We had one of the cottage on the beach. We had to share the bed but we didn't mind as the rest of the resort was such a bliss. From the beach to the pool, from the restaurant to the food, from the staff to the animation team, everything was perfect. But what makes us really want to go back is the staff and the country. The music is brilliant and the way of life so relax! I would like to mention specially Adrian aka Freestyle from the animation team and also Scooby, Vanilla and Show time! They made our holidays so much better! They deserve all the thanks for their entertainment. I have read the previous comments and I don't agree when some people say that the entertainment is 50% french. It is for everybody as everything is translated in english. Well, we had the best holiday ever and we surely would like to go back in Jamaica and would definitely choose Royal Decameron again! Well done to all the staff involved!

Room Tip: Choose the one on the beach but not too close to the Jetty bar or the Main restaurant as it can be v...

We went to the Royal Decameron with a degree of trepidation after reading the Trip Advisor reviews, but we had an amazing holiday at a charming resort.

Firstly my review tips would be to ignore any American or Canadian reviews as they seem incredibly hard to please.

Hopefully I can address what may be your concerns below:

Bait & Switch: If you travel with Thomson/First choice you can ignore the bait and switch concerns as Thomson have a contract with the Royal Decameron.

Accommodation: The cottages are absolutely charming and perfect for your every need. No tea or coffee making facilities but so what, you can get them from the bar at anytime. I sleep with earplugs so can't comment on the noise and our cottage was really close to the entertainment area, but my son said he slept well every night (the rum may have helped).

The French: Not really a huge issue unless like us you get to know and really appreciate the staff as they are incredibly rude to the staff working there and that can be frustrating.

Smoking: Not a huge issue as the areas where people gather are mostly outside, however a few French people decided it was acceptable to smoke in the restaurant surrounded by their very young children, who were eating but a quiet word with them will soon sort that out.

Food: Amazing - so much variety and fresh. The management are on top of every little detail* in the buffet restaurant. Different themes every night and very relaxed atmosphere.

The Entertainment: I said to my family on the first day 'I can see these guys getting on my nerves by the end of the week'. How wrong I was! Vanilla, Birdman, Scooby, Freestyle, Empress and the French crew were all fantastic and such good fun. They are so hard working and polite and really try to make sure you have a great time.

The beach areas and gardens: Perfect, no issues at all with finding a bed and everything is kept so well.

The drugs: You're in Jamaica so expect to get offered it. As Zammo says ' Just say no'.

So why didn't I give the resort 5 stars? *The reason is I believe the management need to be more discreet and relaxed in their management style. I felt they drove the staff far too hard and far too obviously in front of the guests. The younger staff were so nervous that when you asked for something, they walked off to get it and then a manager would chip in with some comment or task that they considered needing completing immediately and that would throw them off their stride and the end result is we didn't get what we wanted due to overzealous managers. The staff are amazing and they really make the place tick. So allow them to talk to guests and work a with a bit less stress so that the customers get the best service.

Hope this helps UK visitors make up their mind to visit the wonderful island of Jamaica and this little gem of a resort.

Room Tip: 62 was great and 117 is great and near the beach bar.

This hotel overbooks and then leaves the employees to accommodate the unhappy guests. The hotel is quite old and needs renovations. The hotel caters specifically to European (french speaking) guests...almost to the point of exclusion to those that don't speak French. Entertainment is in French for 50% of the time and there is an entertainment crew exclusively for the French. ...The staff seem underpaid and under appreciated. The food was acceptable and in the a la carte quite good...staff were happy to be tipped and willing to go the extra mile when showed appreciation...This resort was just o.k. Go in with low expectations and you won't be disappointed and most of all don't expect to get the accommodations you were promised....would I recommend to friends?...no.
