“EFFORTLESS Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2006

FDR has a great concept. The vacation nanny and catering to people that desire to travel with their kids but still need a break. The resort is full of pleasant people that can not do enough for you and your family. The rooms are spacious and clean. The fridge can be stocked daily with food and beverage (my beverage of choice was Grey Goose). The nanny engages your child in activities from 9-5PM. I took a 6, 7 and a 16 year old and they all had a blast. It takes the work out of the family vacation. If you are looking for five star cuisine and state of the art rooms, leave your kids at home and go to a Four Seasons or the Ritz. But if you want to make an unforgetable memory for you and your family FDR is a must!

We stayed at the FDR resort in Jamaica and would never go back.

The rooms are large and come with a vacation nanny to help with the kids. However, the food is repetitive and limited. The buildings are old and the beach is very small. Additionally, the kids club has video games from the late 1980’s and our dive master was under the influence of marijuana on more than one day.

The advantage of having your own vacation nanny is not worth the risk to the children. My wife and I were having an adult dinner one night at the Italian restaurant, while the children had a kid’s club dinner with dancing at the disco.

Imagine our shock at finding our 4 year old on the beach with a virgin strawberry daiquiri with no nanny in sight!! Out daughter had walked out of the disco, went to the bar, got a drink, and then was sitting on the beach enjoying her drink at 9:00pm. Additionally, she was not the only child to get away from their nanny.

All the nannies were in a corner of the disco talking among themselves and were not paying attention.

We would never go back.

First, with all due respect to those who have negative comments, I'm not sure what they were expecting. this resort advertises itself as a small family resort. It does not pretend to be Sandals or Breezes. FDR has a nice niche and excels in it. When we arrived, the resort was pretty empty so we were upgraded from a 1 BR to a 2BR unit. I was amazed at the space in this 2 level / 2.5 bath unit. The unit was clean and comfortable and the simple fact that the kids had their own room was great. i have no complaints about anything. The food was fine, the nanny wonderful. Employees were very friendly. Yes, the beach is small and it helps if you wear water shoes as the bottom is somewhat rocky, however my wife and I have stayed at Grand Lido braco (a 5 star resort) and the beach was the same. While you are there, SCUBA diving is free, you can get free private tennis lessons, relax in a hammock or beach chair, go on a bike ride, and your kids can be entertained by someone other than yourself for as little or as much time as you want. I can't remember the last time my wife and I were able to take an afternoon nap on vacation. in short, this place is perfect for families with children.

OK, so I admit it, I booked this trip way to quickly without doing enough research, my husband and I were celebrating our first anniversary, I got a deal through a friend, so I took it. I was nervous upon arrival. Children abound. Turns out we had a wonderful experience. Excellent staff that really seem to enjoy their job. Rooms are like apartments (you could live there!) So even though we were the only group on the resort (of 70 rooms) without kids, I must say, it was a relaxing trip, there were places to escape such as the adults only Pier restaurant (the best of the three), the hot tub, and the small beach (where kids don't seem to be bothered with.) The trip to the shopping district town 30 minutes away was a blast, but be prepared for high pressure sales if you go to the craft market. Down the beach past Breezes are a bunch of huts with locals selling their wares if you don't want to go into town. The resort has activities like Bingo and trivia, snorkeling, and there are a few excursions. We did the tubing adventure but it wasn't for the faint of heart. This excursion requires you to go up the mountain for 1.5 hrs, it's a very bumpy ride so bring dramamine! It's an hour and a half to the resort too, so be prepared for that! They stop along the way though.

Tipping is a good idea, even a couple of dollars a day would be appreciated. There's nothing like good service and a smiling face. All in all, if a couple of newly married kids could have a great experience here, there's no doubt that a family would truly have the same or better experience!

My children ( ages 12 and 14) and I just got back from FDR and it was a spectacular vacation! My daughther, who is wheelchair bound, was well accomodated. The rooms were kept well and they were also spacious. Everything was included! guest didn't have to ask or want anything. The staff was welcoming. I was very impressed by the large amount of young adults who worked at the resort. They are diligent, respectable and professional individuals who made you feel like family. Our nanny (Krystal) was so sweet. Logan, our waiter, was a true gentleman. Spike and Joan who were the best; were always inquiring about our comfort. Overall, my kids and I had a positive experience at FDR! Thanks guys!!

I had read about 30 reviews of this resort so I knew what to expect and I'll try not to repeat too much of it here.

We had to wait almost an hour at the airport for the contracted shuttle service, JTL, and could never get a clear answer as to when it would show up. Leaving the resort, the shuttle was 20 mins late, had no seat belts for a car seat, and the air conditioning was broken. Much of the road is under construction and with the windows open it was quite dusty at times.

Our nanny, Claudette, was wonderful and put my wife and I to ease immediately. Our reservations about leaving our 3 year-old daughter with a "stranger" disappeared after we spent the 1st hour together with her. Claudette was very patient, caring, and interested in our child. They have lots of activities and crafts for children that keep them very entertained.

I'd recommend requesting a nanny who's gotten favorable reviews on here in advance. A good one can make all the difference in the outcome of your vacation.

The reviews were right about the beaches there. We didn't spend any time on them but did walk over to Breezes (less than 5 min walk and you don't have to go over rocks like others were saying - use the gate at the far right of the property) and use theirs. Breezes is scheduled to close this week for renovations so the beach will probably be empty for the next 4 months.

The room was clean, well furnished, spacious, and ours had a great view of the water. If you have kids that take naps, avoid getting a room by the main pool. The entertainment staff and loud music is on the PA throughout the day there.

The food was decent but depended on the day or which restaurant you ate at. I'd highly recommend the Italian one for dinners (no kids allowed, though). If you're brave enough to eat at the authentic Jamaican one, you can try 'curried goat' or ox tail. Breakfast was a large buffet and cooked-to-order eggs and was never disappointing.

Adult entertainment was on-par with other Caribbean resorts I'd been to. Nothing special, but amusing.

One big disappointment was the SCUBA. I was really looking forward to it and tried to sign up at 9:45am the first day. I talked with 5 different people to try and find out how to go about this, including the front desk and 3 "water sports" people and kept getting the run around. FInally, I was told "show up at 9:20am tomorrow, I think I have a slot open." When I showed up, the class was cancelled and the instructor who cancelled it was not available to talk with to find out why. The next open date I was given was 4 days later and we were leaving by then. They only have a class for 4 people per day, although I think they do take out certified divers at different times. So here's a tip that the front desk doesn't even know: If you want the lesson, be at the watersports center at 9:30am on the first day to sign up for one. Otherwise you never know if you'll happen to run into the person you need to talk to.

The bar service was good. They even have some of the more expensive liquor which is rare at all-inclusives (Grey Goose vodka, Johnny Walker Black Label, etc). Try the 'dirty banana' - it's excellent.

Most of the staff is very friendly and efficient, although it did take 2 days and 5 phone calls for me to get an ethernet cable for the room (the wi-fi was down). Even though it is technically a 'no-tipping' resort, they appreciate and deserve it when they go out of their way. Especially the Nanny's - the resort doesn't pay them much so they rely on tips (our never mentioned that or even remotely suggested such a thing, which was nice). Most guests seemed to give them $100 or more at the end of their stay because they were so pleased with their services. As other's mentioned, they are also the ones who clean your room and stock your fridge.

Overall, a fun family vacation destination with good service and decent to good food.

My wife and family just returned from a great 7 night stay at FDR in Runaway Bay. Needless to say from the title of this piece, we are ready to go back! Lance Parrish, the General Manager, and his staff were so kind and professional, and the week unfortunately flew by too quickly. If you have a family and are looking for a place to go, this is the place! Our nanny, as well as many others that we met, were unbelievable!!!! You truly feel like your whole family gets a vacation! If you want some time alone to recharge your batteries, your nanny takes the kids. If you want to be together, it is your call. Dale, the tennis pro, is first class, and is just as great with young ones as he is with experienced adults. The bartenders, the table staff, the kitchen crew - they were all first class. We had a great time, and highly recommend FDR Runaway Bay to any family!
