“River rafting down Rio Grande”

Portland Experience-Rio Grande Rafting Jamaica
Reviewed May 12, 2014

We really didn't want to go river rafting.as my wife thought it was white water rafting which she had done previously but when the rafter captain stopped our car going over Rio Grande bridge at 5 pm they convinced us to go the next morning.they also recommended a hotel villas owned by a lady name Sharon directly above river at Snow Hill which was an excellent place to stay.

We left our car at villas and taxi took us up the hills where we boarded the bamboo raft and I must say our boat Capt Bailey was excellent we had a great trip down the river and rapids we stopped a few times for a swim and the lunch we had of crayfish was excellent.

It was one of the best days we experienced in Jamaica a trip that usually takes 3 hours actually took us 7 hours as our boat Capt Bailey was in no hurry and neither were we - having lunch halfway down with a couple of red stripe beers and a nice cold dip in the river afterwards was exhilarating.the people were so nice and very friendly..they didn't ask for tips but we gave them one anyway with pleasure...I would definitely like to repeat our rafting trip on our return to Jamaica and could stay one week around the Rio Grande it's a beautiful area.

This was a very different and enjoyable experience for us. We have been on many excursions but this was the most relaxing one yet! We were 2 couples and had 2 rafts - our guides were Roy & Trevor. We were taken by taxi to the mountain rafting down the Rio on bamboo rafts for 8 miles. Roy even serenaded us with his beautiful voice. We slowly made our way down this peaceful river and stopped halfway down to have lunch on the riverside. Thanks to Belinda for coming down the mountain path and cooking for us. She had rice with peas, Chicken Fricassee, bok choy, fresh crawfish cooked on a makeshift stone and wood stove. There was also a cooler with cold beer and drinks for purchase as well. Had lunch and then had a leisurely swim in the river. Legend goes that you will look 5 years younger if you swim in these mineral waters, lol!

We then continued on for another hour through beatiful vegetation and calm waters - also through "lovers' lane".

Worth every penny!

I have had several experiences but not one as excellent and relaxing as floating down the Rio Grande in Jamaica. Taking in the scenery and drinking a cold RED STRIPE Beer was a GREAT experiences. I never thought I could be so relaxed. When we did this raft trip we had a total of 4 rafts (family members). All the guides were very knowledgable about the area and the river with it's long history. They were so helpful.... we never even got WET!

Hey this was amazing and relaxing while go down the river through the blue mountain valley listening to the birds singing bing entertained by the captain as he guide us gentle down the beautiful river. With the green lush trees to both sides of the river gives the feelings of paradise and a place to relax.

We started out at 9:00 a.m. with Cool Steve Tour. Steve is the ultimate professional and our day was off to a great start with him. We drove up to Berrydale where we boarded the raft and a driver took our car back to the bridge where we would ultimately end our rafting tour a few hours later. The scenery was out of this world and the ride very quiet and peaceful. Wish we had some cushions as the bamboo was a bit hard but the captain told us the cushions normally provided were wet. It was all good as we stopped midway to rest and eat. There were two vendors at the stop - one sold drinks and the other food. The food was out of this world and well worth the stop.

Our captain was amazing and knew the river well as he has many years experience so we felt quite comfortable with him. It rained a few times along the way but it never bothered us one bit as it didn't last long. The river is very clean and we ended the tour where the river empties into the caribbean sea.

Be sure to take your camera and relax and enjoy.
