Portland Experience-Rio Grande Rafting Jamaica
Reviewed October 15, 2013

Hey this was amazing and relaxing while go down the river through the blue mountain valley listening to the birds singing bing entertained by the captain as he guide us gentle down the beautiful river. With the green lush trees to both sides of the river gives the feelings of paradise and a place to relax.

We started out at 9:00 a.m. with Cool Steve Tour. Steve is the ultimate professional and our day was off to a great start with him. We drove up to Berrydale where we boarded the raft and a driver took our car back to the bridge where we would ultimately end our rafting tour a few hours later. The scenery was out of this world and the ride very quiet and peaceful. Wish we had some cushions as the bamboo was a bit hard but the captain told us the cushions normally provided were wet. It was all good as we stopped midway to rest and eat. There were two vendors at the stop - one sold drinks and the other food. The food was out of this world and well worth the stop.

Our captain was amazing and knew the river well as he has many years experience so we felt quite comfortable with him. It rained a few times along the way but it never bothered us one bit as it didn't last long. The river is very clean and we ended the tour where the river empties into the caribbean sea.

Be sure to take your camera and relax and enjoy.

Our journey started in the foothills at a place called Berrydale which is a few miles outside of Port Antonio. The drive up to Berrydale is on winding mountain roads so I would suggest to guests that they go to Rafter's Rest instead, which is on the main road west of Port Antonio, leave your car there and have the shuttle there take you up to Berrydale. Your raft journey will terminate at Rafter's Rest anyway so this way you avoid driving the rather challenging road yourself and can relax and enjoy your surroundings. Either way you will have to pay for the shuttle and this is more cost and time effective. The raft trip itself is wonderful as your raft captain guides the raft the several miles downriver to Rafter's Rest. Be sure to take along your camera and perhaps a rain poncho as this area is a rain forest. Enjoy.

Imagine gliding down a gentle tropical river on a Bamboo raft for two, the gurgle of the water and the slow splash of the pole as you are expertly guided downstream on a beautiful and warm day, watching birds fishing as you glide gently by.........well that is what it could be.
What you actually get is a group of raft captains having a shouting conversation with each other and talking on their mobile phones for the whole 3 hour journey. The nearest thing that approaches it would be like being stuck in a car with a bunch of noisy kids for a long journey.
Perhaps you may be able to get a captain to take you on your own and not as part of a group, in which case it might be fantastic.
You can arrange the day before for a lunch to be prepared for you half way down, which was great - freshly cooked and delicious, and don't bother with a snorkel as there is almost nothing to see. Also beware that your captain will expect a LARGE tip at the end.
