We stayed at Great Huts for two weeks between mid-December 2006 and early January 2007, (obviously) including the Christmas and New Year periods. We had such a great time - we had booked the Seagrape, a lovely hut on the edge of the spectaculair cliffs with a private jacuzzi overlooking the sea.

Close to various stunning beaches (10 minutes to either Long Bay to the East, Winifred Beach to the West) and only 25 minutes from Port Antonio. Would recommend several good restaurants close to Great Huts (Norma's at the Marina, Dickie's Best Kept Secret - both in Port Antonio, or San San Tropez just around the corner from Great Huts) but make sure you don't forget to try the Boston Bay Jerk stalls at the main entrance road to Great Huts. Owners Paul and Nikki are very friendly and very helpful to give information about the area.

Public transport is excellent (shared 'route' taxis which pass the main road (2 mins walk from Great Huts) every couple of minutes and will take you to Long Bay, to Port Antonio or any of the nearby restaurants for less than $1.50 per person).

A nice mix of different types of people staying at Great Huts, all different age categories..... friendly Canadian couple with small children.... an American couple actually had their wedding ceremony at Great Huts during our stay there with their guests staying in the various tents/huts - great atmosphere!

Highlights of our stay were the beaches (especially Long Bay and Winnifred), Reach Falls, a jungle hike to a former coffee plantation / maroon village and the friendly people.

All in all a fantastic stay and if we go back to Jamaica we would surely consider coming back to Great Huts. We had two weeks in Great Huts and spent our last week in Negril. Negril on the West side was nice but nothing compared to East Jamaica.

If you would like to stay away from noisy tourists eating hamburgers with extra ketchup in all-inclusive resorts with prison style fences around them, jet skis and if you'd like to pay $1.50 for a beer instead of $9, if you would like to stay the real Jamaica with beautiful nature, forget about Negril, go to Portland and stay at Great Huts.

Carolyn Barrett of Barrett Adventures has been extremely helpful in organising our trips and airport transfers - commercial website links are not allowed here but a quick google search should bring up her details.

Nikki, Paul, Carolyn and all at Great Huts - thanks for a great stay, a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Hopefully see you again in the future.

Great Huts is an unbelievable place! The atmosphere is completely unique and no matter where you go you will never see anything quite like it. The mix of rustic, "roughin' it' vibe with the luxury of amazingly comfortable beds -- we were in the Bamboo treehouse -- and jacuzzis, the warm and welcoming staff -- Thank you Kayode for the beautiful honeymoon welcome of fresh flowers!! --, the learning you'll do talking to Dr. Paul and his lovely wife Nikki, the amazing snorkeling to be done right on the property, delicious breakfasts, exotic and friendly birds, adorable dog couple that is expecting -- good luck to Sophie & Sam! Then you leave the property to walk to the end of the road and eat delicious jerk and visit with locals, the friendliest we met along our trip, who treat you like a local yourself and make you feel so welcome. This place was a real highlight for us. And if you get lucky you just might get a rock scramble tour from Dr. Paul and he'll introduce you to all the wonders of his amazing Great Huts world. Thank you for having us!

What a wonderful vacation!! My wife and I just returned from spending 9 days in Jamaica. This was my third trip to the island and I have spent time in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Negril, and Mandeville in the past. We loved the natural beauty of Port Antonio and the Great Huts. Much different from the touristy, resort feel of the more popular cities. This is a part of the island where you can sit and have a conversation with a local and watch the stars move across the sky at night. If you are looking for an all night party with lots of tourists then you would be better off in Negril or Ocho Rios. If you want pampering at a Ritz this would not be for you either. We stayed in the Sea Grape Hut with a private view overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The Great Huts also have private access to Boston Beach and some of the best surf in Jamaica. I will return to Jamaica and certainly The Great Huts and Port Antonio will be my first choice to visit.

Great Huts is enchanting. beautifuL. relaxing. oh and so much more.. Good food, good musiC, good peopLe. The staff on board are great, and the rates are wonderfully reasonable. very serene environment_kept clean & airy. the common spaces, tents, and tree houses are constructed from all natural resources... Great views of the ocean, and the beach is just steps away.. Boston Beach is small, but rad because it's the first surfing community i have encountered in jamaica & i've traveled all over the island. i highly recommend great huts if you are looking for an enchanting, peacefuL, ocean-side retreat . .and you can get down with nature.

The Great Huts allows one to relax and enjoy what Jamaica is best known for, the beach. It has a great cliff top outlook into the ocean and also a private beach side area to relax, take in the sun and enjoy the atmosphere.

The staff is very friendly (especially the owner, Dr. Paul who is involved in philantrapy work in the region).

This is a must try experience for anyone in the area. Accomondations range from tent huts to tree houses with a Jacuzzi. The choice is yours.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Great Huts: Paradise on the Edge is an oceanfront resort on the lush northeastern tip of Jamaica. Modeled after a traditional West African coastal village, at once both rough-hewn and modern, it is a convergence of nature, heritage, spirituality and technology. Off the beaten path, but not far from the bustle and night life of Boston Bay and Port Antonio, Great Huts' jungle-cliff-beach habitat is a distinctive ecological and cultural experience. The Africana House, a Rastafari Mansion by the Sea with high ceilings and Ethiopian-inspired decor throughout, has a spacious communal room, four regal bedrooms, a 5,000-square-foot rooftop deck and a lotus-shaped deep water pool, resting atop five acres braided with intriguing caves and hiking trails. Great Huts is perfect for the adventurer in all of us, an intimate yet communal getaway or a secluded corporate retreat. ... more   less
