“An Paradise of Inspiration and Generosity”
Reviewed February 5, 2010

My husband and I recently returned from 5 days at Great Huts and came home deeply enriched by our experience and eager to plan our return trip. As one might expect from anywhere in Jamaica, the landscape and people were lush, beautiful, and soulful; however, Great Huts brings visitors back to our roots by offering us a chance to experience the country in an open and natural setting.
To begin, Port Antonio itself is much-appreciated step away from the resort atmosphere, which has become all to familiar in so much of the Caribbean; the Blue Mountain countryside offers visitors colorful and inviting villas that share the warmth the local communities. As is true for many travels, the people “make” the trip; but even more so in Port Antonio. All of our experiences with the locals were warm and made our hearts sing with the magic that is their music, their generosity, their positive outlook on life, and most of all the sincerity of their smiles. We felt safe and often inspired during all of our ventures. Moreover, we found the local cuisine to be fresh, flavorful, and bountiful. Even the staples such as “rice and peas” offered a surprisingly wide range of fragrant spices—each dish prepared with its own special touch and always with Love! Finally, as one might expect, but could never imagine fully until you explore yourself, the area is one memorable view of paradise after another!
Now on to Great Huts in particular! I must say that I am nearly at a loss of words to fitting describe the Great Huts experience, primarily because it is so much more of a “feeling” when you are there that is a able to come across on a page; however, I will try! Energy…we all feel it when we walk into any new environment, and when you walk through the bamboo door and enter into Great Huts, the energy shifts. Suddenly, a sense of, tranquility, curiosity, and comfort present an invitation to wander and view the artful decoration of the naturally inspired tribal village-style bamboo “huts”—each which offers its original craftsmanship. Perhaps if “awesome” best describes the property and “remarkably and genuinely accommodating, warm, respectful and friendly would describe ALL of the staff at Great Huts. We were especially grateful for everyone’s positive energy and sincere willingness to make our stay especially beautiful. Thank you!
Finally, if you are blessed during your stay like we were, you may have the opportunity to meet the creator, generous spirit, and artist’s brush—Dr. Paul-- who’s vision of creating Great Huts for all of us is most appreciated. During our stay, Dr. Paul was indeed the host of kindness and support. It was such a lovely opportunity to speak with him about his work and to hear his stories. We also enjoyed watching Saturday evening’s cultural show and sharing the best pizza I have ever had during the amazing presentation—a historical walk through the music dance, and story of the Jamaican people. The show was one of the highlights of our trip since it offered us a genuine window into the heart of Jamaica and its treasures—the people. And, for a last note, Dr. Paul has a remarkable library in the lobby; we enjoyed a world of surprises and opportunities for discovery here.
And to everyone at Great Huts…..See you next year! Xoxo Rj and Lynnette

It's rare when a trip to Jamaica becomes more than just a vacation. When it turns out to be something special - something that changes your entire perception of the island - you want to tell even the most hardened Caribbean traveler that you now "get it." Great Huts is indeed luxury camping, as many have called it.

We stayed for more than a week at the Bamboo Tree House. It's the first time we stayed anywhere where we left the windows wide open and immersed ourselves in the sounds of the surf and the elements 24/7. Relaxing? We slept 10 hours just about every night. The king bed is very comfortable and the bathroom downstairs is legend. Looking at the pictures, you wonder about the privacy. Once you're there, you realize it's not an issue at all.

Dr. Paul is an amazing host and is the protective head of the family of which you instantly become a member. The staff helped us immediately overcome any concerns we had going in. The food was sensational. We made several trips downtown ($100J per person via route taxi), shopped the farmers' market and stocked up on veggies and groceries - and Ronald performed magic in creating incredible dinners with them.

The beach is fantastic with great snorkeling, great fishing and great relaxing in one of their many hammocks.

This was our first stay on the east end (Negril is our usual destination), and it was a great introduction to the hospitality of Port Antonio. Unlike the more traveled destinations in Jamaica, there's a much more grounded feeling. There's not as much of a tourist/local dynamic in this area...the people you meet are genuinely happy to meet and know you. In more cases than anywhere else on this planet, they remember your name. The route taxi drivers, the downtown denizens, the local fishermen...after a few short days they transform from independent tour guides into good friends just happy to see you and to just hang out and share stories.

We spent a day at Reach Falls. We've been to YS, Dunns River and Mayfield Falls. Reach rivals Mayfield as our favorite of them all - a beautiful place.

First timers to Jamaica might want a little more perspective before coming to Great Huts, but it's almost important that you eventually come here. You'll come away with a better appreciation for the beauty of Jamaica and its people.

PS - Bring a little something extra for their myriad community projects; the homeless shelter near town is Dr. Paul's current endeavor.

We also want to point out the 4/5 we gave for cleanliness - it's not a slam at all. In fact it's praise. It's a very rustic setting. If you're expecting a lot of paved walkways and fussy landscaping, that's not what Great Huts is all about. Their grounds-keeping enhances the natural beauty of the area but they never compromise it. Rest assured that they fastidiously keep the rooms and facilities spotless, but they leave the nature alone. We really liked that.

Final note: Bring insect repellent (we like Avon Expedition Bug Guard), snorkel and fishing gear (17lb line with steel leader - those fish have teeth!) and water shoes. If the bugs nibble, the best itch relief is available at the drug stores there: Anthisan creme. One dot on the bite and you'll forget it in moments.

This was my sixth time in jamaica, and my third time in the port antonio area. I have stayed all over the island in a wide range of accommodations . I will never stay anywhere besides great huts again!

The grounds and beach are amazing. WE had several day trips planned before we got there, but hardly made it passed the door of our hut... the views are spectacular whichever way you look, the private beach there is perfection. you really have everything you need right there once you enter the gates of Great Huts.

Dr Paul and his staff are so accomodating and friendly. They go above and beyond for all their guests no matter how big or small their needs.

When i told him i was an orthodox jew and concerned about how we could keep kosher at his place, he offered to get us all knew pots, pans, utensils, etc..as well as provided a cook/food-shopper/cleaner at no extra charge.. she even babysat our 9 month old for us here and there making us able to actually relax a bit while on baby patrol. He also added a new microwave and fridge to our room (the fig tree hut)... so we could heat up our baby's formula and food and store it. He put in a stainless steel sink- one solid piece of steel sink, which means you can easily kosher it once you get there).

We really didn't want to leave... its not uncommon to see the guests who have checked out just lingering by the gate house... not wanting to leave paradise. For sure, there is no better place to spend your vacation in Jamaica.

Great Huts is an amazing place....like none other. It is what we call 5 star camping with views and scenery that are just incredible. My husband and I are not campers and were a bit hesitant as we entered this property and spending our first night thought we had made a mistake but after that it was all beautiful. When we awoke on our first morning it was breathtaking.....period! We stayed in Sea Grape and Bamboo Tree House.... Sea Grape being our favorite as it was so private. We felt we had the whole place was ours!

The location of Great Huts is the best.... everything within walking distance. The Jerk Stands are right outside the gates with many choices of dining. We did eat dinner a few nights on the property and it was very good and prices were reasonable. Boston Beach is right there and that is by far our favorite beach. They have surfing and an instructor right there and that was a fun experience.

Dr. Paul has made Great Huts a unique and beautiful place also doing so much for the Jamaican people. We had the pleasure of meeting him during our visit. He, Tanika and the staff do go out of their way to make sure your stay is going well. One day we were even invited to go on an excursion but unable as we had made other plans. There is so much to appreciate at Great Huts and in this area.

Once you go.... you'll know... We do!

Wow, what an amazing place! We looked for a very special and unique place to get married. When we arrived at Great Huts, we realized we'd found it. In fact, Great Huts Resort exceeded our expectations. We stayed in a charming, open air, bamboo hut situated in the trees overlooking Boston Bay. Our wedding ceremony was perfect as we exchanged vows on top of a cliff surrounded by the most beautiful natural scenery imaginable. Thank you to everyone at Great Huts for making our wedding and time in Jamaica unforgettable. We will surely be back. Jenn & Jim

Great Huts is a must see and definately well worth experiencing. I spent a night in the Cherry Goat and found it charmingly rustic. The grounds are interesting but the heavy foliage invites the mosquites - take deet! There is a nice area on the cliffs, overlooking the water, to catch some sun but I was pestered by the "surf instructors" way too much - was a bit surprised they are permitted on the grounds to solicit the guests. A filling breakfast, included in the room rate, was a nice bonus and being steps away from the Boston Bay jerk stands was fabulous!

The Africana House, a Rastafari Mansion by the Sea with high ceilings and Ethiopian-inspired decor throughout, has a spacious communal room, four regal bedrooms, a 5,000-square-foot rooftop deck and a lotus-shaped deep water pool, resting atop five acres braided with intriguing caves and hiking trails.
