We stayed in great huts last november, and it was definitely not what we expected - it was so much more!
We booked the seagrape for 2 nights, and actually had to change our trip schedule so we would stay in that specific hut - and it was well worth it! The location is breathtaking, right on top of the cliff, and the hut itself is secluded and allows you to relax completely, without anyone to bother you, just sitting in their romantic gorgeous tub on the edge of the cliff!
We ended up staying an extra 2 nights, but had to change rooms because the seagrape was not availavble - so we took the fig tree. It was not as secluded as the seagrape but more luxurios and amazingly decorated. If the hot water is working again in the fig tree - the tub overlooking the bay is the perfect spot to spend a quiet couple's evening without a care in the world.
But just so you'd know - great huts is not for everyone. Don't come there expecting a 5 star hotel with fancy toiletries and amenities. It's more like a saffari experience. the trails leading from the main area to the huts are exactly that - trails! They are unpaved, and not for stilleto heels :) The huts are clean, but not for the sqeamish - you have to expect bugs in the room with you, cause the huts are not closed rooms, and you share the forest with all the forest creatures.
The beach is drop dead gorgeous! we spent hours just admiring it and taking picturs of it from every available corner. again - not a sandy carribean beach, but the perfect place to relax in a hammock with a book watching the surfers...
They have a main area where you eat breakfast, that was simple but good (same breakfast every morning) - and just make sure to bring insect repellent with you or the mosquittos will eat you allive during breakfast (which is the same everywhere in Jamaica outside of the resorts). dinner can be served on the upper floor of the main area, and despite a not so large variety - the food is really good. especially the seafood pizza (yes, pizza in Jamaica...)
And on your way to or from breakfast don't forget to talk to the gorgeous talking parrot!
If your looking for a great place to eat near by (relatively near by) - about 5 minutes west of port anotonio is a place called Dickie's best kept secret (you can find it with the help of locals) - a great 5 course meal, including lobster and whatever they have that day, or whatever you like if you order in advance, not too expensive and just delicious, with the best service you'll get in Jamaica! And although it's not written anywhere - sometimes they're open for lunch - just call and ask.
The jerk centers near by are ok, but not great. If you're looking for jerk - definitely Scotchie's about a half an hour east of MoBay.
The staff at great huts are extremely nice and helpful, and the owner Paul would love to tell you all about Jamaica, history, culture and people. And ask him about the Jewish pirates of the caribbean! He even helped us find our next hotel, which was a wonderfull recommendation!
So we definietly recommend it for people not looking for the usual Jamaica resort experience, but for a place to enjoy nature, but with style!
Thank you to everybody at Great Huts,
Eran and Sharon.

My husband and I spent a portion of our Jamaican experience at Great Huts. We were stunned at the beauty and amazed at the work put into creating a wonderful and inviting property. The grounds and huts are artful yet functional among the rock and greenery.
Our hut was clean and every nook had been considered for use or view. There were plenty of drawers and shelves and places to hang wet stuff. Netting and bug coils were ready for use and the lighting installed work easily for ambiance or for reading. Our hut was private yet open as so to enjoy nature and relax, which we absoluetly did!
Our breakfasts were delicious and filling, prepared as we sipped juice and coffee and chatted in the kitchen area of the lobby. There, one can also find plenty of interesting books and a computer.
During the day we forgot ourselves on the beach below the cliffs of Great Huts. We explored and swam and read. It is fantastic what has been created here on the beach. Again every nook built with care and thought, to enhance the experience. Lunches we ate outside the property at the jerk centre where we had a chance to mingle and explore a little further.
Dinners were delicious as well. Prepared to order and delivered to an upstairs balcony filled with gorgeous furniture and art which includes the ethnic floor paintings. Even the dinnerware was fabulous to look at!
The evenings were filled with the sounds of crickets and waves.
We couldn't have asked for more! thanks Paul and staff, Greg and I had such a fantastic stay!

We just got back a couple of days ago from our 5 night stay at Great Huts and find ourselves disappointed to not wake up to the sounds of the waves and reggae in the kitchen with Raymond singing along. Our first three nights we had that absolute pleasure of staying in the Sea Grape... this hut is amazing! You don't even have to get out of bed in the morning to take in the most amazing view. Our last two nights were in the Fig Tree and that treehouse is another truly awesome experience, overlooking Boston Bay we could watch the surfers right from the bathtub if we so desired, but it's much more fun to join everyone on the beach.

There were people around selling things but we never once felt pressured in to buying or even taking a look, everyone was really pleasant to deal with and we felt very safe. Even when we went to the craft market in Port Antonio we never felt any pushiness. Highly recommend stopping by to meet Rock Bottom... his carvings are amazing and he is such a nice man.

Went to Frenchman's Cove one day (cost $1 by route taxi) and had an amazing time. They warned us that the water was cold and we reminded them that we were from Canada and it was -30 the week before we came down! The water was fine... Also went rafting on the Rio Grande with a man named Granville. We had such a great afternoon with him and he told us that he does hikes through the banana plantations too, so we'll definitely be checking that out when we go back.

The food there was amazing! We ate at the jerk centre once and loved the jerk pork. We ate supper at Great Huts every night and the food was excellent! The continental breakfast you get at Great Huts was so good that most days we didn't even need lunch: fresh fruit, coffee, juice, toast, eggs and veggies... YUM!

Am absolutely planning on going back and telling everyone about our great stay at Great Huts!! Thanks to Tanika, Tanya, Raymond and everyone else for a fabulous vacation!!

My husband and I spent three nights at the Great Huts and we wanted more! We stayed in the Sea Grape hut a perfect place for a honeymoon. The place is clean, simple and gorgeous. The view from the Sea Grape hut is water as far as your eyes can see. You are on top of a cliff about 100 feet up and it is breathtaking. There is an amazing outside tub for you to fill with water when things get hot. The beach below is so cool too. Lots of places to explore, discover and chill. Dr. Paul (the owner) took me on a private snorkeling tour of the reefs around the property and caves. Dr. Paul and his staff create a very welcoming environment. Breakfast is free and so is snorkeling gear, the internet and local calls. Really great bang for buck. Plus they use the funds from the Great Huts to run a local shelter for the homeless. And their dedication is clear. I highly recommend this place.

As a student in Kingston, I made several trips out to Port Antonio because it was my favorite location on the island. Slow and sleepy with hardly any tourists to detract from the natural sights. Great huts was my favorite place to stay. It felt luxurious and still connected to nature. I also loved that it was just steps away from a great jerk shack. The only downside was security. Having lived in Kingston, it still felt safer than there but the premises weren't exactly locked down. It was easy for strangers and locals to get in if they wanted to. But, from my experience, it was the same security you'd get at any place in the same price range.

My husband and I returned a few days ago from Great Huts and are still feeling the glow of an amazing experience. We had the great fortune to stay in SeaGrape, situated on the edge of the sea and open to the nature that abounds all around. From the double chair perched on the cliff, we witnessed an incredible sunrise, a furious, glorious sea (we happened to be there during some unusual torrential December rains, which also made using the open-to-the-sky bathroom quite an adventure), and what has to be one of the most beautiful views in the world. We loved the Saturday evening dance performance of the Manchioneal cultural group: vibrant, creative, engaging…. even educational. In some ways, it was a metaphor for the whole Great Huts experience: personally touching, extremely original, totally alive, and wonderfully enchanting. If you come to Great Huts, be prepared for something different…. and something incredible.

Some practical notes: NO BUGS…. we didn’t see a single mosquito the whole trip and rolled our bed netting up and out of the way. We found the route taxis to be inexpensive, convenient, but also a bit hair-raising. If you’re coming through Port Antonio on your way in, it’s a good place to use an ATM to exchange money (your driver will probably be happy to stop… and it can’t be done at Great Huts/Boston Bay). Locals do want to sell you things… which can be a bit annoying, but never aggressive. My strategy was to buy something from a couple of vendors (both at the beach and the Jerk center) early in the trip, so they stopped asking me. It was worth the money for my peace of mind…. and I felt good about supporting the locals (plus there are some neat things to buy). We found some decent snorkeling right at Great Huts (follow the cliffs around from the beach). We had a few dinners (very good) at Great Huts, ate at least once a day at the Jerk Center, and also tried some local restaurants (Woody’s, Norma’s at the Marina in Port Antonio- expensive but worth it, and Chill Out at Long Bay . Desserts seem hard to come by for some reason… and we were delighted to discover a small café in the “Mall” (across from the entrance to the Marina) that serves delicious homemade cakes, all kinds of coffee drinks, as well as alcoholic drinks.

Great Huts is a wonderfully quirky place to stay, we were in Sea Grape hut - shower and loo under the trees and an outdoor bath on the cliff top, it was great. We loved the beach and all the places to sit, there were chairs in the rocks and hammocks under the trees. but the best place of all was the lounger on the cliff top by the hut; frigate birds and John Crows flying above you, and at night a wonderful view of the stars. We had dinner in one evening and watched the cultural show peformed by dancers from a nearby school which was excellent, as was dinner.
All the staff are helpful and friendly, and keen to make sure you have a good time.

Great Huts: Paradise on the Edge is an oceanfront resort on the lush northeastern tip of Jamaica. Modeled after a traditional West African coastal village, at once both rough-hewn and modern, it is a convergence of nature, heritage, spirituality and technology. Off the beaten path, but not far from the bustle and night life of Boston Bay and Port Antonio, Great Huts' jungle-cliff-beach habitat is a distinctive ecological and cultural experience. The Africana House, a Rastafari Mansion by the Sea with high ceilings and Ethiopian-inspired decor throughout, has a spacious communal room, four regal bedrooms, a 5,000-square-foot rooftop deck and a lotus-shaped deep water pool, resting atop five acres braided with intriguing caves and hiking trails. Great Huts is perfect for the adventurer in all of us, an intimate yet communal getaway or a secluded corporate retreat. ... more   less
