I love this place! The huts are all unique. Ours didn't have a 4th wall. It just looked out into a tropical garden. The food was really yummy. The people were lovely. There isn't a sandy beach. It's rocky, but you can lay around on the wooden chairs and swim and jump into the ocean. I won't stay anywhere else when I go back.

We just got back and things could not have gone better! The crew are wonderful and very easy going. We stayed in the African Sunrise and Fig Tree house. The African has the best view hands down but is a little tiresome with all the ladders. The bathroom is also next to the bed with no curtain available, so private potty time can be tricky, but hey!.... just means someone's gotta go down a level and enjoy the swing for a bit. The Fig Tree is spacious and would be great for a family as it has the bunk beds. We really enjoyed the community area next to the Fig house and as a plus no one else really used it, so it was like having a giant master tree house suite all to our selves. Ohh and they both had great HOT water!!! What a plus!

The only thing that was bothersome were the barking dogs late at night. Not sure if they were Great Hut dogs or not, but at least once a night the dogs in the area would get going and howl quite a bit. This is par for the course in rural areas where dogs are used for property protection, so I can't blame Great Huts for that. The dogs were just doing their jobs. The tree frogs are also rather loud, but after a night you get rather acclimated them :)

I was really impressed with the lack of roaches and other unwelcome bugs. Our room choices added to this lack of pests as Dr. Rhodes advised me in this regard. I'm scared to death of roaches and was expecting Jamaica's to be huge, but surprisingly they're not!! So don't be put off by the bugs....they're really not too bad in the tree houses. I imagine the huts would have been an other matter. There are TONS of lizards and hermit crabs though. I personally loved them and they added to the atmosphere.

Don't forget to visit Lilly, their beautiful white cockatoo She's such a love bug and loves a good belly scratch. She also watches like a stalker while you eat your daily breakfast next to her enclosure. She's always looking for some attention :)

Ohh and bring a couple flashlights. The lights in the rooms are usually red and orange, so it's rather dark in the rooms at night.

We LOVED Great Huts. It's a great place to get back in touch with nature without forgoing the sweetness of hot water and a plush bed. We'll be back!!

Room Tip: African Sunrise is great to see the sites and keep away from bugs. Fig Tree is spacious and has an amazing shower!!

We came across the Great Huts by accident and luckily were able to come back the next week and stay for a couple of nights. We stayed in Sea Grape and fulfilled childhood dreams of living in a rain forest, huts with amenities.Beautiful area, great beaches, friendly and courteous staff, good food.A lot to do in the surrounding areas and we feel as though it is the real Jamaica,we will return next year for 2 weeks.
A word of caution,it is open to the outside and the pathways are stoney so wear good shoes, you need to be sure footed. This is not your run of the mill resort but an experience in its self.We are seniors and were able to navigate okay.
Two canadians.

Room Tip: There are budget accomodations, but we like the fully serviced huts, some are in the middle of the property with a garden view,we had a view of the ocean ,cliffside, fantastic.

Spent an amazing family vacation at the Great Huts! Heard of the Huts several Years ago and Finally realized my dream of getting there! It was Everything and More than I could have wished for! The area is breath taking and the atmosphere is relaxing and warm. The staff is wonderful and so accommodating. They couldn't have been more helpful. Enjoyed the Saturday Night Show very much as it was packed with History, Music and dance! The sun rises were gorgeous and plenty of places to view the splender. Loved the Private beach with hammocks to relax in And cliffs to jump off of.!
One night we had a lovely bond fire down at the beach that a staff member happily built for us! Loved the Little stretch of Jerk Stands to the approach to the huts. Delicious ! Drivers were arranged by the Huts for us to travel to other places this area has to offer. I highly recommend Reach Falls...a wonderful experience...and of course the Blue Lagoon!
Perfect ..Everything was Perfect! We also spent our last few hours in Kingston Visiting Jewish Jamaica! Totally worth the Trip on the way back to the Airport!
Culture, Great Food, Friendly Staff and Magnificent Beauty...what more could anyone ask for ! Paradise for certain...

Just came home from a 12 day trip to Jamaica. We spent 4 nights at great huts. What I liked was the view of the ocean and the friendly Jamaican staff. I have been to Jamaica about 15 times in the last 25 years. What was not so wonderful was the weather in Port Antonio, a lot of rain, and the fact that the bathroom was on a different level than the bedroom, and required you to go outside, in the rain, then climb down a ladder, which gets wet when it rains, to get to the bathroom. We were in the Bamboo Tree house. The website is not clear about the different levels in the room.
There was also an issue with the ocean access. It looks like there was a wooden platform that extended out into the water, but it was smashed up on the shoreline. Left over from hurricane Sandy, maybe, but that was 5 months ago. The only other reasonable access is about a 1/4 mile walk past the Boston Jerk center and everyone trying to sell their chicken and various other products. Once you reach that beach the access was very nice.
I have eaten jerk chicken many, many times in Negril and Mo Bay and I was really disappointed in the Boston Jerk center. Very little activity and mostly overlooked chicken.
On the plus side was the view of the ocean from the top of the property, spectacular.
I do not recommend this place if it is your first trip to Jamaica, or to any third world country.
We also thought the food was nothing more than average for authentic Jamaican cooking. We preferred having dinner a few yards up the road at Odell's little hut which was better and much cheaper.

A ramp into the ocean from our portion of the beach provides easy access to the sea. A security guard and attendant at the beach can identify the ramp if a guest does not recognize its location. And we have a wonderful sea pool at our beach - a natural Jacuzzi - for soaking as well. There is no need to walk past the jerk center to enter the main Boston Beach. One can walk along the shore line which we clean and maintain in order to reach the main Boston Beach if a guest desire to swim there rather than at our section. Our section is very clean, attended by one or two staff members and provides chaise lounges and emergency rescue equipment.

Regarding our dining room, admittedly we do not offer gourmet cuisine but most guests love the ambience and say that our dinners are delicious. Breakfast is included in room rate and consists of freshly squeezed orange juice (never from a bottle) lovely fruit plate, great coffee, eggs and toast, and special Jamaican breakfast and pancakes two days per week. Barbeque at the cliff-front of Great Huts is offered for lunch and the view is amazing.
A variety of dinner items - vegetarian, fish, shrimp, lobster, chicken, goat - are attractively served on fine china from Zimbabwe.
Our beautifully adorned deck features no less than 30 pieces of sculpture and has an adjacent bar constructed of bamboo and beautifully carved furniture.
Of course we need to cover our food and labor costs and are not as inexpensive as the adjacent jerk center which many of our guests do enjoy.

We will not change the construction of the Bamboo Tree House at this time and note the trade off - opting for view and style rather than an easier entrance to the downstairs bathroom.

The weather in Port Antonio is hard to predict but it does rain almost every night and is sunny almost every day. The rain keeps this lush part of the Island green. Many of our huts have indoor bathrooms on same level as bedroom.
