I've visited Frenchman's Cove eight times over 15 years, each time in connection with a conference held there. It is the perfect venue for the events we organise, which tend to be a mixture of talks, discussions and workshops for small groups. This year there were 15 of us in all, so we could have our sessions in the living room of one of the villas looking out over the sea and sometimes spilling out onto the patio with its mix of lush tropical vegetation, cliffs and sea. We started each day with Qi Gong, early in the morning on a grassy promontory surrounded by the sea on three sides. We had lunch at the beach restaurant every day. Afternoons free to enjoy the beach, the grounds and occasional outings, such as a boat trip to the nearby Blue Lagoon. Then in the evenings we had another talk/discussion, then headed out to local restaurants and ended up partying at one of the villas. Everybody loved every minute!

Room Tip: Always chose to stay in a villa if you can. The staff are very helpful and for us they kindly put e...

Stayed at Frenchman's Cove Resort for five days. Like all of the villas, our one bedroom villa overlooked the sea and the design of the villa provided for a beautiful view of the sea. The villa was clean and comfortable and kept that way during our stay by the wonderful housekeeping staff.

The complimentary breakfast was perfect and provided delicious fruit, breads, cheese, eggs, juices, and coffee (the coffee was really exceptional). The staff managing the breakfast did a great job of making sure guests did not go away hungry.

The hotel grounds are extensive and beautifully kept. I enjoyed watching the cattle egrets follow the groundsman/gardener with the leaf blower. While he worked the leaf blower in the tall grass, the egrets (about five of them) would just follow him around, waiting for him to scare up some treats.

The beach is a short walk from the villas and is a beautiful retreat. The beach staff do a great job keeping the beach looking great and are quick to provide a cozy lounge chair and a beach cocktail. The beach has a restaurant/bar. They make a fabulous Rum Punch but the food menu does not match the food menu advertised in the villa. The restaurant was out of most food items but the food that was available was tasty.

The staff in the reception area were friendly and informative about both the resort and Port Antonio. They were most helpful with any requests that I had.

The resort is about 5-10 minute taxi ride to Port Antonio and I would recommend taking a taxi (not a chartered one) to and from town. A regular Taxi costs about $1.30 or so each way while a chartered one is around $6 each way. You can catch a regular Taxi or bus by standing outside the resort on the main road in the direction you need to go. The chartered Taxi will pick you up and drop you off at your villa.

On a side note, my villa did not have a phone or TV. The TV thing was no problem at all but I would have liked to have a phone in the room.

Overall, I would recommend Frenchman's Cove to anyone traveling to the area. The staff are really amazing and the resort and beach are fabulous. I would definitely go back!

We recently stayed at Frenchman's Cove Resort and had an amazing experience in this blissful piece of paradise. As mentioned in some of the reviews here, it is an older resort and there are a few cosmetic shortcomings to the bathrooms. But we enjoyed flawless hot water and excellent service from the staff and management alike. Our clifftop Villa had breathtaking views. And the 5 minute walk down to stunning Frenchman's Cove every morning was something to look forward to. The property is beautiful. 45 acres of old trees, birds and other wildlife. Gorgeous fruit trees and flowers. They recently built a lovely Yoga Chalet by the river. Can't think of a better place to unwind and relax. The property has excellent security. The staff were so respectful. The gardener even checked in with us to make sure he wouldn't be using his weed whacker when we were there. The beach staff were so welcoming and looked after all our needs. From beach chairs to lunch. Complimentary coconuts were even offered on one of our last days there. Absolutely - this is an older property that could use some cosmetic upgrades. But it was a very small shortcoming in what is an idyllic retreat.

My hubby and I love Portland. We wanted to get away from Kingston for a couple of days and decided to stay here because it wasn't over the top expensive like so many other places are. Boy did we get what we paid for. We started in the Greathouse...such a laughable name. The building is run down, the rooms look like they haven't been updated in 30 years, mattresses are thin and uncomfortable. We had to call the front office (using our cell phones since there are no phones in the room) each time we wanted to shower because for some reason there was never hot water and it had to be turned on by the housekeeper each time. Simple things like blown bulbs in the bedside lamps were overlooked by staff. Breakfast was ok enough I suppose. The only thing this property had going for it is the actual cove. The water is fantastic. The rest of the place, not so much. Needs a major overhaul. We won't be back

Room Tip: Choose another place to stay

I am writing this review sitting on the deck of my villa at Frenchman's overlooking the cliff and sea. It is a spectacular view, the weather is perfect, and there is 8 inches of snow and ice at home. We are very grateful to be in paradise.

This is the second year I brought group to Frenchman's Cove for a week long yoga retreat. The spectacular natural beauty was what brought us back. The management very much wants to attract other yoga groups for retreats and has made significant improvements. They built a beautiful yoga shala next to the crystal clear fresh water river that flows through the property into the cove. We are not using any music during classes this trip. The students are enjoying the sound of the surf and birds.

They also brought in Michelle, an excellent chef from Toronto, to cook delicious vegetarian meals for our group. Our meal time together is a wonderful experience. We eat outside on the terrace of a beautiful villa overlooking the sea. Couldn't even imagine a more wonderful dining experience and we are enjoying it immensely.

The new manager, Angella, has been a pleasure to work with. She always has a lovely smile, and is completely competent and on top of everything. Arranging taxis and tours has been very easy.

Our entire experience has been wonderful. I hope to return again, and again. Thank you Galvin, Michelle, Angella, Janet, Dean, and all the smiling wonderful staff at Frenchman's for making our retreat perfect. One love!

Room Tip: All the villas are different. Each has spectacular views.

There are no pictures on the hotel's website of the rooms in "The Great House" but from the description and the pictures of the beach you expect quite nice accommodations. The property is enormous and consists of several small houses in private settings. We were booked in The Great House. There was only one person in the office when we arrived to check in. She gave us the driving directions to get to The Great House and said the housekeeper was waiting for us and would show us to our room. There was no one waiting for us. We wandered around the ground floor looking for someone that might direct us to where the rooms were located but there was not a sole in site and there were no rooms on this level. We located a staircase, walked up and came to a long corridor, open to the outside. This level looking like a very cheap motel. Yes the room is rustic but there is rustic and there is not well cared for and signs of serious deferred maintenance. The phone does not work so you cannot call the front desk. The rugs on either side of the bed were so dirty, obviously had never been washed, that I had to turn them over. The back side of the rugs was cleaner than the side which is for putting your feet on when you get out of bed. The towels were not clean and one was so dirty that I thought maybe the last guest had used it to clean their shoes before leaving. The sheets were not clean and had very obviously not been changed that day. The light bulbs in the 3 lamps did not work and the sockets were loose and falling out. There was no hot water. The bathtub/shower was very, very dirty and the state of the toilet was despicable. When we checked out the following morning, which was not soon enough, I took the one extremely soiled towel to the office and told them it would be a good idea to wash their towels for their hotel guests, the rugs and best to change the sheets. On the plus side the beach and the cove are beautiful and it is obvious why movies have been made at this location.

Room Tip: Try one of the one bedroom villas. Do not stay in "The Great House"
