Owner description: You've always wanted to enjoy elaborate, fruit-flavored cocktails on a beautiful tropical beach, so here's your chance; this beach offers spectacular sand, surf and service.

Frenchman’s Cove is a private beach where you can avoid the crowds and enjoy one of the better beaches in Jamaica. In my opinion US$10 for admission with a beach lounger is not a steep price for full day at the beach.

Patrons can bring their own cooler and picnic basket but waiters patrol the beach to take orders for drink and food. The cold Red Stripe Beer was welcome refreshment at a reasonable price. We brought our own picnic so did not sample the food. The change rooms were newly renovated and adequate.

When the sea breeze is active the waves allow for body surfing, small children and weak swimmers need to be cautious during these conditions. On the other hand the river is very placid and the water is very clean with a clear sandy bottom.

My visit in January brought back fond memories of my own childhood as I had visited with my parents on several occasions over 50 years ago.

Best of both worlds...beach and river in one spot. Food is also good. A must stop when visiting Portland.

We found this beach to be a disappointment after paying the $20US entrance fee.
The cafe was dirty and there were no tables set up.
We couldn't locate the Restaurant.
The rest rooms were well sign-posted.
There was a life-guard on duty and there were plenty of notices around telling you what you couldn't do.
Not welcoming and the only negative part of our trip to Jamaica.

But it's overpriced for what you get. $8 per person. Yes, a very pretty beach/cove and delicious water, including a fresh water river that runs into the sea. But the food at the café was atrocious - bring a picnic! - and you have to pay an extra $2 for a plastic beach chair. The only scowling Jamaicans I met were the people working on this beach and in the café.

The entrance fee was $8. When we arrived we followed a road that was to the left of the sign that said "Beach this way (to the right)". The road led us to a beautiful lookout point that had a random canyon sitting there - definitely worth the easy 5-7 minute walk.

The beach was very clean; however, I would not say the same about the bathrooms! Swimming was wonderful, as it was all sand and there were nice waves! Just to the left of the main beach there was a clear fresh water river which we swam down as well, going almost all the way to the main entrance. Recommended place to unwind and relax.
