We stayed four nights and wished it had been five. Mockingbird Hill is a magical place. Situated at an elevation above the lush jungle hills outside Port Antonio it allows guests to settle into a place of calm and tranquility while gazing out over the tree canopy to the sea and mountains along the coast. The rooms are ideally suited to the environment, attractively decorated, comfortable, well maintained but not fancy. The atmosphere is like that of a guesthouse or inn as Shireen and Barbara's very well-mannered dogs are frequently found lying on the tile floor of the reception area. We were attracted by the owners' commitment to sustainability and the opportunity to experience this firsthand. Shireen was gracious in answering all of our questions, providing context and candor about their efforts to provide more than just luxurious lodging and exceptional cuisine in an "exotic" setting. The hotel property includes a series of garden spaces reached by paths winding down the hillside with places to sit and watch the hummingbirds or marvel at the tropical foliage. Beyond Port Antonio are the Blue Mountains and the Rio Grande River. Both provide memorable experiences of the real Jamaica enhanced by the local guides whose personal pride in their country and knowledge of the local environment is impressive and enjoyable.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper level afford views of the sea.

Aside from the fact that you enjoyed your stay, we really appreciate your support for sustainable tourism and helping us contribute positively to the local community. We can only achieve our goals and keep our business commitment to the environment with the support of our guests. Our aim is not only to provide memorable holiday experiences but also to ensure that we can make a positive contribution and gently encourage our guests to support our various initiatives; the question of how we interact is also very important if we are to counter the many negative impacts of mass tourism and numerous challenges in terms of global climate change and other environmental impacts. We feel we have a responsibility as a business to contribute in a positive way and yet still be as informal and human as possible - the antithesis of "corporate". So thank you for staying with us and helping the rural economies, the small pubs, farms, villages and the community members that we partner with. We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed the local food and the authenticity and individuality and last but not least, the tranquility of your experience. Hopefully we can welcome you back to our special place for another wonderful experience.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 days as part of a 7-day birding tour of Jamaica, and wished we could have stayed longer. It is one of the top 5 places we've stayed at during 20-plus years of international travel. Not only is the accommodation lovely and comfortable as noted in previous reviews, but it sets the high bar for ECOLODGE. The meals are delicious, varied and with a focus on sustainability: locally grown and/or organic ingredients where possible, and participation in "meatless Monday". The owners have employed many unique practices to reduce, reuse, or recycle consumables. There are clever methods to reuse/recycle water, and paper generated by the business end of things is recycled by a local artist into notepaper and other items. The beautiful rooms are "air conditioned" by the natural sea breezes and fans. The owners' hospitality and helpfulness are icing on the cake to the stunning views, spectacular grounds, and food. The Mockingbird hotel was also the ground agent for all of the travel our birding group did in Jamaica. Before arriving my husband and I e-mailed co-owner Shireen with some special needs we had before and after the scheduled part of our group tour. Shireen helped arrange transfers we needed to other parts of Jamaica after our tour ended, and her drivers helped us get a SIM card for my cell phone. Our entire stay in Jamaica was made easier by Shireen's attention.

It is gratifying to learn that you noted and appreciated so many of the responsible practices implemented in operating the hotel. Hopefully they added "meaning" into your holiday, knowing that there is this additional dimension to staying here which also enhances your experience. So even though you only stayed here for a short time, we appreciate that you enjoyed spending "quality time" in a hotel that makes a concerted effort to reduce its impact on the environment and enjoyed the garden fresh and local produce with the daily changing menus. Thank you for choosing to stay with us and sharing your positive experiences and encouraging more guests to opt for a more meaningful holiday. It was a pleasure having you here and we are more than happy to assist in anyway we can with planning, sharing tips and helping to make arrangements so that you enjoy a wonderful time. We are happy to know that we were able to do this for you. Many thanks!

We spent 4 days in January of 2014. Beautiful gardens, peaceful, many nearby attractions. A profoundly relaxing experience. The food was a treat; great choices and new options every day for dinner. Spend a day at Frenchman's cove!

We were charmed and delighted by the peaceful and beautiful setting of Mockingbird. Set in a fabulous and very loved garden, full of trees and bird song, this hotel has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The owners, Shireen and Barbara are committed to making this hotel a unique experience, we had trips to water falls and the Blue Mountains....lots to do for everyone.....and the food was superb and varied. A short drive and we we're swimming in the most glorious, clean and blue sea....dreamy. We would go back and highly recommend this special, small and intimate hotel. The rooms not glamorous, but very clean and look out over the garden to the sea - stunning views.

I stayed at Mocking Bird Hill for 4 nights with a birding tour group. After a long (we often started at 5 am) hot day in the field, returning to the peaceful beauty of the hotel and its gardens was a wonderful restorative. The approach to the hotel is deceptive; up a pot-holed road bordered by heavy vegetation, the façade is somewhat plain. Then you are welcomed by the meticulously trained, friendly staff and taken up to the bar/lounge where dramatic botanical paintings and white wicker furniture draw you forward onto the sheltered balcony with its stunning panoramic view of the pool, gardens, Port Antonio and the sea. Afternoon tea and cocktails are served here and you could easily spend hours. The food was delicious with a choice of appetizers, 4-5 entrees, fresh baked breads & desserts. The menus did not repeat during the 4 days we were there. My room was lovely and very comfortable with a hammock for lounging, a balcony, original art by Barbara Walker & fabulous Blue Mountain Coffee for the coffee press! The chest & bathroom counter were made of Blue Mahoe, a dramatically patterned wood from Jamaica's national tree. Hosts, Shireen and Barbara are seriously eco-friendly using solar power, local food (as well as growing their own veg) & conserving water. Wandering the gardens was a delight for a birder/gardener. The hotel will organize daytrips for you and transport you to the beach at Frenchman's cove. Loved the pool. Just a great hotel! Wish I could have stayed longer.

This is the third time we have stayed at Mocking Bird Hill. Apart from the fact that it is in a beautiful location, with fantastic views down to the sea, it is also a real haven of peace. Our bedroom was simple but well-equipped and all the public spaces in the hotel are impeccably kept and comfortable. This is not your average international luxury hotel, it is small, individual and friendly. We ate dinner at the hotel for three of our four nights and the food was interesting and delicious on each occasion, including the vegetarian menu. The staff were uniformly friendly and helpful, while our hosts were constantly on hand to ensure that everything was as it should be. Thank you Shireen and Barbara for making our stay so memorable.

Room Tip: Make sure it's a sea view.

This was our first stop in Jamaica before going on to Kingston and Negril. It was absolutely perfect. The rooms are beautiful and the food is amazing. My husband and l travel a lot and the breakfast here was one of the best l have ever had, especially the home-made breads and lemon curd. Shireen and Guy were very friendly and helpful in arranging trips for us. We only stayed for 3 days, but we will definitely stay longer next time. Having spent the last 5 days of our holiday in Negril, l cannot understand why anyone would choose an Americanized version of Jamaica over beautiful Port Antonio. Kingston was fascinating too, so next time we will stick to unspoilt Jamaica and give the tourist traps in the north a miss.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback about your experience here and the destination, especially as Port Antonio remains relatively unknown and most visitors focus on the 3 main resort areas. We are grateful that you are spreading the word about the authentic experiences you enjoyed here and the fact that this area represents the heart and soul of the country with the combination of the lush rain forests, the mountains and the lovely coastline with so many intimate coves and romantic beaches. We look forward to welcoming you back and introducing you to those experiences that you were unable to enjoy due to your short stay. There is so much more waiting for you to discover!
It was a pleasure for us and our team to have had the opportunity to welcome you and we are grateful to hear that you enjoyed the quality of service, the food and your experience over all with us. Thank you again!
