“Tries its best - sweet staff”
Reviewed January 10, 2011

Here is a local restaurant that's gone a bit 'flash' and tried to do something a bit slicker for PA. There was a wedding party in the lobby having a good time and posing for photos. It might be the posh local choice for the area, not many tourists around. The staff were all dressed up and eager to please, the manager was wearing a satin jacket, and the cocktails were good. My prawn mains were nice, my boyfriend's were a bit funny -- but there had just been a massive storm and they were missing some ingredients ie sweet'n'sour sauce, we forgave them. There was a real sense that the folks at Wi Yard would do anything to please you. When the credit card machine crashed, it took a while, but we could pay in the end lol. Worth a try for the experience and kitsch decor, little beachfront tables and umbrellas too ; ) I'd rather eat here and support locals trying to succeed than at some chain resort.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed December 29, 2010

Whilst driving round Jamaica we stopped off in Port Antonio, and with no idea where to eat we sought advice at the petrol station; we were advised to go to Anna Banana. The restaurant tries to look up market, and is reasonably comfortable, however it is let down by very slow service and food that is below par. We were a party of eight consisting of four children, we all ordered the soup, which arrived cold and had to be sent back so that it could be zapped in the microwave, even though it was not as hot as we would have liked, everyone loved the soup and we looked forward to what was going to follow. We skipped the salad and went straight to the main course. The kids ordered fried chicken, with rice and peas, with the rice being delivered in a small ceramic bowl, the portion was so small the even my youngest who is eight felt that she needed more. To add insult to injury we saw one of the waitresses walking to the staff eating area with a plate piled high with rice. Myself and two other diners ordered king fish, and although it was ordered in three different styles we all had the same experience, it was dry and tasteless, akin to eating cardboard, one of my fellow diners refused to eat it, describing it as being "awful". We also ordered a large plate for fried plantain, to share, which arrived, covered in batter and was universally panned as being tasteless. With the general comment being, "how is it possible to get something so simple, so wrong?" I've obviously had a bad enough experience that I felt the need to write a review. This restaurant seems to get good reviews, so maybe we visited on an off day. Would I go back? No. Would I recommend it? No. From a cost point of view, the food is reasonably priced just not imaginatively cooked.

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed October 31, 2010

Very low key, relaxed atmosphere when we went, ate a delicious fresh lobster on the beach. Wish I could go back tonight! Service was a little slow, but very friendly and perfect for what we were looking for.

“If you want something a bit more conventional, this is it.”
Reviewed June 25, 2010

If you're in Port Antonio, you soon realize that it's not a town for 'fine dining'. The best restaurants are pretty much shacks. They don't have menus - they just tell you what they're cooking. Many of them don't have much in the way of drinks on offer - maybe beer or some of the local tonic wines or delicious creamy rum concoctions which come in small bottles. Anna Banana is more what you might expect (as a traveller from England anyway). It's a bit like a small chain restaurant and bar - TGIFs Cafe Rouge or something like that. When we went the atmosphere and service was OK and the food was good. I had vegetable rundown - a nice local dish cooked in coconut milk -and Chris had a lobster salad. We have no complaints at all but it was very empty, and we've been told that the food is not good when it's busy. You don't get the real local experience here though - it's a bit ordinary.
