Room 1-A was advertised as a one bedroom and kitchenette
with whirlpool bath and shower, telephone and private balcony. There was no whirlpool bath and the shower curtain was cloth which allowed water to soak the floor during each shower which created a fall hazard. The private balcony was located directly across from a main street with heavy traffic and the balcony was not enclosed. the balcony was not painted and had no patio furniture. I had to request patio furniture twice and got it by Wednesday after someone from maid service requested it for me. The post cards were hidden behind the front deck and were unaccessible.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street and not above a radiator

If you're looking for an American-style two-bedroom apartment, you will be disappointed; however, if you're open-minded, you will find the Jamaican-style living quarters to be quite acceptable. One bedroom has two queens, nightstand, TV, and a dresser with separate outside entrance as well as access from the front door. The second bedroom is actually the living area - one queen bed, nightstand, TV, dresser, and dining table/chairs that seat 4 with access to the front of the property. Good thing the second bedroom has outside access so the sleepers in the front room are not awakened by comings and goings of fellow travelers. The bedrooms were air-conditioned. The beds had foam mattresses, so by the middle of the week, some of us had minor backaches.

The kitchenette is basic - full apartment-size fridge, four-burner stove, and sink with some counter space. There was only one pot and one pan, which made cooking meals a little more time consuming than we would have liked. It didn't matter anyway, as only two burners on the electric stove functioned - this is typical in most of the lower-budget apartments we have stayed in - at least the kitchen was minimally equipped! Most of the front desk staff were very helpful if the apartment needed something, but one was not - promised to take care of stuff but NEVER did. We learned to ask when she wasn't around. No ice cube trays, but there are two ice buckets and you can fill up all day long from the very friendly and efficient bar/restaurant staff.

One bathroom - adequate - with tub and shower. Bring your own hair dryer, as they are not provided. There are two decent-size closets with hangers and racks - one with double doors and the other open, like in American hotels. The cleaning staff was excellent and the apartment was always squeaky clean. The outside balcony does not have a table, but there are two chairs.

This hotel provides beach towels, but we didn't figure this out until the day before we left. Be sure to ask for one at the front desk. They are quite large.

Small beach, but plenty of chaise lounges to go around. There is some shade from several almond and sea grape trees, and the other guests are good about sharing the shady spots. The pool is quite nice, but it could use a few more lounge chairs. There was some competition for them.

Food is good - excellent value for the money - large portion sizes. We didn't find the food to be totally authentic Jamaican, but a little toned down for tourist tastes. Go elsewhere to eat if you want authentic Jamaican food. Lots of options for breakfast - DO NOT order the waffles - you get three thawed out frozen TOASTER waffles three pieces of bacon and some fruit for $ 7 US. The rest of the breakfasts were fine and filling - they make great omelets. Mostly American fair for lunch - excellent French fries here. Dinner is a mix of Jamaican, American, and European dishes. The rice and peas are wonderful!

Security was ever-present, watchful, helpful, and friendly. We never worried about our belongings, either on the beach, poolside, or back in our apartment. We did not use the safes - first of all, they require a $150 US deposit, which we thought was outrageous (most places is free-$20), and secondly, the safes were not in the rooms but we were told they were down in the restaurant area. Weird. But as I said, the place seems to be quite secure.

Shields is very close to town, so filling up your apartment fridge is an easy 10-minute walk to multiple grocery stores. There are plenty of money-access machines and banks in town as well.

We would recommend Shields to all kinds of travelers - it is family-friendly, and although it had quite a mix of travelers when we were there (families, singles, couples, groups of friends - European, Jamaican, American, and Canadian of all ages), Shields accommodated the variety of groups efficiently and the guests all seemed to be quite happy. 99% of the staff were great - friendly and helpful. The place is clean and the beach and pool are quite nice. We will go back there.

One caution - they do not let people check in early here. They will store your luggage in a locked room while you wait to get into your room (they send you down to the bar/retaurant). If you plan to wait there, get your suits out before they store your luggage. There are very nice, clean restrooms behind the retaurant where you can change. Or, find something else to do - but remember to change into suitable clothing first - we didn't and were miserably hot for a few hours until the apartment was ready.

The rooms are simple but do have air condition. If you need to stay on top of your US TV shows they get all the major networks as well as cable channels. The food was also good and the breakfast options included traditional American, English and Jamaican dishes. Security was present in the beach area but no one ever walked up to bother you even on the beach. Most water sports and even cruises to a remote island for the day pull up on the beach to pick you up, so that is very convenient when staying here. Also the dive shop is next door. Unlike the neighboring resorts, Shields has a 2 for 1 happy hour EVERY DAY. Staying here won’t hurt the bank and leaves money for you to do other things around town.

Beutiful setting close to the beach and to downtown. However, we felt as if we were intruders sometimes held hostage buy a parinoid system of food and beverage contracts which the servers (wait staff) didn't comprehend and would change with each meal. Hence we ended up overpaying several times to servers who were more compelled with doing a contiual and consistent inventory-it was clearly a nickle & dime operation that never moved to the place of warmness...not to mention the unsitely bands that we had to wear to identify that we were guest at Sheilds. The worst thing about the resort is the flee infested dogs which would constantly annoy us on the beach. This is trip was our 4th to Negril, our 10th to Jamaica and our worst stay ever....

Room Tip: only second floor

We stayed at Shields 5 nights in April. We had a 2 bedroom room with kitchenette. First were shocked by the furniture (quite shabby). But having in mind the price of the room, it is silly to expect something more.
For the next 5 nights we moved to the White Sands. Just then we realised that Shields was very good situated (5 minutes walk from the center of the town). Besides the food was delicious at Shields. Those who are interested in diving will be pleasantly surprised that Sunny Divers are next door at Travellers.
All in all the hotel is a good value for money.
