Beutiful setting close to the beach and to downtown. However, we felt as if we were intruders sometimes held hostage buy a parinoid system of food and beverage contracts which the servers (wait staff) didn't comprehend and would change with each meal. Hence we ended up overpaying several times to servers who were more compelled with doing a contiual and consistent inventory-it was clearly a nickle & dime operation that never moved to the place of warmness...not to mention the unsitely bands that we had to wear to identify that we were guest at Sheilds. The worst thing about the resort is the flee infested dogs which would constantly annoy us on the beach. This is trip was our 4th to Negril, our 10th to Jamaica and our worst stay ever....

Room Tip: only second floor

We stayed at Shields 5 nights in April. We had a 2 bedroom room with kitchenette. First were shocked by the furniture (quite shabby). But having in mind the price of the room, it is silly to expect something more.
For the next 5 nights we moved to the White Sands. Just then we realised that Shields was very good situated (5 minutes walk from the center of the town). Besides the food was delicious at Shields. Those who are interested in diving will be pleasantly surprised that Sunny Divers are next door at Travellers.
All in all the hotel is a good value for money.

We arranged our wedding with Shauna who is the Manager at Sheilds, Shauna arranged EVERYTHING from where the sun would be at the exact time of our wedding ceremony right down to ensuring that we received our marriage certificates all in order once we got back to the UK. The staff are so nice, nothing was too much to ask of them and they all genuinely seem happy to help us. Myself and my now new hubby stayed in the Deluxe room which has a balcony, huge, airy ceiling with exposed beam and a brill view of the sea and the pool, fridge and the best bed I have slept in on holiday EVER!. My sister, niece and friend stayed in a two bed apartment which had a well equipped kitchen and loads of room, even for three girls and all their things!! We booked b&b basis which had a choice of food everyday, this really set us up for the day and we rarely ate again until dinner time, you MUST try their jerk chicken and rice!! The wedding itself we could not of asked for better, if you decide to get hitched in Jamrock, make sure you go to Shields!! Shauna even arranged v last min changes such as additional bouquet! The security night and day made us all feel safe and sound. The hotel is clean and well kept at all times. We found the position of the hotel walking distance to the town centre, ATMS etc just right for us as this kept taxi costs down and this end of the beach is quieter so less interruptions when watching the sunset! I can not thank Shields enough and can not recommend them more!!!

We are a family of 5 & have been going to Negril since 2006. We've stayed at the All Inclusives--typically "tagged" & 3 years ago we decided to be free birds & fly on our own. We stayed mid-beach, it was nice, but too far a walk from downtown & the market. A couple places later we found Shields! So glad we did!!!!
Staff was absolutely amazing, rooms were clean & our valuables were completely untouched! They accommodated us fully with everything we needed & even went so far as to buy a new corkscrew for our room when we broke our own! Miss shields & Miss Sharon as well as Deandre made sure our needs were fully met!

Someone mentioned that they didn't see security....funny, we saw them ALL the time & they made sure we weren't hassled on the beach! Vincent. The life/security guard in the day was awesome! We felt very safe there. We've been to Jamaica 7 times, this is by far the most affordable with great service.
It's close to shopping, great restaurants & one of the cleanest beaches without the typical "all inclusive-I'm just a tag number" feeling!

We are going back & we will stay here again & again!

I just returned from Negril and stayed at the Shields. I stayed in a 2 bedroom with another friend and another friend was in a one bedroom.

Location: The hotel is the 2nd to last one on 7 mile beach when heading towards the roundabout. There's not much in the roundabout area except for a supermarket, ATM, and Burger King so that's not a plus in regards to location. It would be better to be closer to the middle of the 7 mile beach area so that you're closer to more food/bar/activity options. The hotel is right on the beach. The beach was short in this area with only about 10 yards of sand to the ocean, which was less than a lot of the other hotels there.

Rooms: The rooms are clean and basic. Shower worked fine, decent pressure. No toilet issues. The AC worked well. One issue is that there is no room safe and the door locks are very basic. I was concerned about theft. You can rent a small safety deposit box for$3/day that's by the restaurant near the pool. This should be free. They were small and could only fit documents though and not a laptop. We didn't have any theft issues though. They also wanted to charge my other friend $3/day to have a fridge in his room. This should be included. I believe he paid $100/night for a one bedroom. We paid $160/night for a 2 bedroom. For this time of the year, that rate was reasonable. We also did have a full kitchen in our 2 bedroom which was nice. Only the 2 bedrooms had this.

Guest Fee: They charge you $30/night if you bring a guest back to your room after 11pm. They must have cameras somewhere b/c my friend hooked up with a girl and she came back after midnight. There were no guards anywhere to be seen when he came back to the room but 2 days later, they told him he owed them $30 for the guest that stayed over. Book your rooms for the max # people allowed b/c then you can have that many people in the room with you. If you book for 1 person, they'll charge you for bringing someone back. If you book for 2 people, but it's just you, than you won't get charged. Personally, I don't think any hotel should have this fee unless the "guest" overstays their welcome more than a night. Part of going on vacation is having fun and that might mean having an unexpected guest in the room for an evening. What's the harm?? It doesn't cost them anything more. They just do it to make more $ off of you.

Staff: The front desk staff was kind of gruff and not too friendly. We had to loosen them up with some jokes. The restaurant staff, maids, and maintenance guy were all friendly. Our airport driver said that this place has poor customer service and that a lot of the smaller hotels are the same way. He recommended the all-inclusive places, if you can afford them.

Restaurant: The food was decent at the pool restaurant and priced competitively with other hotels. Service is slow but that's typical anywhere in Jamaica.

Misc: There's free wifi but you can only get a signal in the lobby. They give you beach towels at the front desk. Beds were decent.

Overall: It's fine for a roof over your head, but I didn't like the attitude of the front desk staff. I think there are better places to stay in better locations towards the middle of 7 mile beach for a little more money and likely with a nicer staff. Personally, I'd make sure I stayed somewhere with a room safe as I've heard of theft issues in Jamaica even though we didn't have any problems. I should have looked into that before staying there.
