“Great Place but very Loud”
Reviewed January 19, 2010

Citronella is great. Lots of privacy, great views relaxed atmosphere. On the bad side I couldnt hardly sleep while there. If you want to get away from the booming stereos of the city this is not the place. When they finally quiet down the dogs bark constantly. Not the dogs that seem to live on the propety mind you but across the street and seemingly everywhere. We also stayed at the rock house a few days and had the same issues.
Negril is great as long as you are not a light sleeper. Lots of peace. Not so much quiet

This ultra-laid-back cluster of funky cottages is a fabulous spot for undisturbed relaxation for two, or for a base-camp for bigger groups. We rented the little A-Frame cottage, which was perfect for the last three nights of our Honeymoon: quiet, private, charming, with impeccable views. My favorite part was the outdoor shower, even though a quick cold-snap in the weather made the experience a bit.. brisk. This is the kind of place that the view of gorgeous tropical flowers all around the shower is more important than any ultra-luxe bathroom amenity, and the luxury of your own private hammock overlooking the waves makes shaking the thatched-roof-debris out of your clothes after a big wind worthwhile. The larger cottages would also be VERY fun for family vacations or trips with lots of friends.
The owners are generous with restaurant recommendations--some within walking distance, some a $5 cab ride away. Activities are also available, though you'll want to research ahead of time or plan to get advice from the owners on-site, since the vacation-rental atmosphere of Citronella leaves you more or less on your own to explore the island.
Though we could hear the band from neighboring restaurants early in the evening, the ambient live reggae was a fun addition to our later hours lounging on our own private point looking out over the water, and the music was always well over by the time we got back from dinner. And you can't beat the location for sunsets. Don't miss the very reasonably priced and local-vibe boat rides (snorkel, fishing, sunset...) with famous Vincent!! If you want a low-key, island-style vacation, and are at least adventurous enough to catch a cab for off-site activities, you'll LOVE this place and never want to leave!!

This spectacular place was like a dream come true! We had our own private house, as well as a scenic view, and direct access to amazing swimming/snorkeling. There was internet access, a small breakfast, fridge and plates, silverware, coffee maker, toaster, etc. We had everything we needed. We were so lucky to have found this place, met amazing people, seen amazing things, and have a relaxing place to enjoy our vacation! Hope you are able to experience this place, as it is an escape to a tropical paradise!

As you can see from the date listed above, it has taken me way too much time to write this review. My husband and I have been to Jamaica five times which I hope entitles us to the name "Jamericans". Until we visited Citronella, we had always stayed at all inclusives and had never experienced the true Jamaica. My daughter was married in an all inclusive in Jamaica in February 2008. We met the owners of Citronella in Virginia Beach after we had already confirmed all of our wedding arrangements with an all inclusive in Negril. My husband and all of the members of our weddng party were so enthralled with Citronella that they did not want to go back to the all inclusive and the other lush resort on the cliffs where some of us stayed.

Citronella is truly a magical place. The Colapretes have created an absolutely unique place. It may sound silly but when you go through the gates of Citronella, watch out! You feel as if you have gone through the looking glass. Experience the locals, look out to the sunset and the cliffs, and know that you will always come back. And if you ever want to get married, Citronella is noncomparable to any other place.

We have many wonderful memories of Negril but our best is Citronella.

Having not been to Jamaica for the past 10 years I was ecstatic to have had the pleasure of staying on this gorgeous property on the West End of Negril on our recent trip. We stayed at the Cave House for 6 days in late November and felt like we had the entire property to ourselves. The lush landscaping insured both solitude and silence and the house was perched directly over the water so the sound of waves lapping against the cliffs serenaded us every night. Whether we were snorkeling in the ocean or sipping a red stripe on the patio we never felted crowded or bothered. Safe and gated with a cobbled courtyard and lush grounds the property was gorgeous.
The rustic but spotless Cave House was an incredibly peaceful, romantic experience for my girlfriend and I. Louvered windows allowed the delightful sea breeze to drift through the house and myriad fans were available to insure we never felt too warm. The beds were firm and comfortable, linens soft, and little thoughts like a large fridge and silverwear were available if needed. House keeping was unobtrusive and excellent. The other staff was incredibly pleasant and knowledgeable and always ready to help with any issue or question. The Great House had all the little pleasures you could want like free wifi and a lending library of books as well as board games. Breakfast was delicious and the chef was always willing to accommodate special requests. The owners were incredibly friendly and unobtrusive.
We loved this property and plan on returning to it next time we return to Jamaica. However I will say it is important to understand that this is a "rustic chic" type property, no phone or tv's in the rooms and free roaming geckos abound. To me that is what makes this property such a gem and a tropical escape. But be aware it is most definitely not a Holiday Inn and the owners and staff work amazingly hard to create a peaceful tropical refuge for vacationers to get away from it all.
The only other disclaimer I can think of is that while several great restaurants are within a 5 minute walk you would want to take a route taxi or shuttle to reach a greater choice of dining options. Do yourself a favor and take the time to try this hidden gem of a property, I just hope it doesn't become so well known I can't book a room next year.

Spent 7 nights there over thanksgiving and just loved the place. We were in the Round House. What a wonderful little house it is and the location is one of the best in Negril with its deck right on the edge of cliff.
Completely private with your own sea access to some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean right at the bottom of your own private stairway. We saw a big ray, dolphins, small eels and a huge variety of plentiful reef fish. Plenty of good local places to eat within walking distance and our little kitchen was perfect to whip up a few meals.
The staff there are all very friendly and welcoming. The sunsets were spectacular every day. Being around the bend to the west from most of Negril the sun sets straight out to sea from your deck which makes for perfect pictures and viewing.
I'll be posting a video I made of the property on YouTube under the account "RastaRichNegril" in a few days. Check it out.

We were at Citronella in late October 2009 and had a wonderful time. We stayed in the Cove House. Our one-week stay at Citronealla afforded us the opportunity to see the "real" Negril area.

Citronella is located about a 5-10 minute taxi drive from Negril's Seven Mile Beach area. The scenic location is Negril's West End on the 50 ft. high cliffs area. Our traditional Jamaican cottage was wonderful and different for us... NO tv, NO telephone and NO air-conditioning. The fans were all we needed for comfort for sleeping. With almost three acres of lush tropical landscape, this property has been kept in the "traditional Jamaican" environment. Citronella offers incredible views, beautiful sunsets, quiet caves, secluded coves, and most of all privacy. The cottages are very private from one another. They are all open-aired, and have louvered windows, ceiling fans and mosquito netting over every bed.

All cottages have a private entrance to the ocean and outdoor (fairly) private showers. All of my showers were outside. We spent several days at Citronella lounging in the ocean on the provided floats. Junior provided our transportation from Montego Bay to Citronella (about 1 1/2 hours).

We walked to nearby restaurants for lunch and dinner most of the time and other times our new buddy, Niah, provided transportation to other restaurants. Our favorite restaurants included: Sips and Bites, 3 Dives, Tensing Pen and Rock House. Other days, Niah provided transportation to Margaritaville or White Sands to hang out on the beach. Niah, the taxi driver, can usually be found at LTU Pub which is next door. Turn right when walking out the front gate and a short distance down the road is the Negril Lighthouse. Rick's Cafe is also a very short walk.

We're glad we broke our inclination to stay at Caribbean all-inclusives to stay at Citronella. This allowed us to meet some very nice people and eat and shop at some really "local" places. It was fun and we would definitely return to Citronella.
