“Catch a great place to relax!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2014 via mobile

My wife and I were invited to a wedding at Catch a Falling Star resort. The resort did not disappoint! Great location on the cliffs of Negril, awesome view and very relaxing. Ivan's bar and restaurant on site was superb. Great jerk chicken and burgers. Our room, the Aquarius, was comfortable, clean and had the best view of the Caribbean. The staff was polite and attentive, many new us by name after a day or so. I recommend this place highly.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2014

We spent the week of February 15th at Catcha. We were a family of four - two parents, two 15 year old boys (one son, one friend). The minimum age for guests is 15. Although quiet, this hotel was a great place for the boys, who spent time swimming in the cove and jumping off cliffs. So here are my thoughts:

1: Our accommodations:
We stayed in Virgo, a one bedroom suite. You enter from the front patio, which has a view of the ocean, a lounge chair, a wide loveseat type chair and table with candles. The kitchenette has a microwave, toaster, fridge, plates, silver, some pots and pans and a hot plate we used for grilled cheese and eggs. There is a table and two chairs, as well as a larger comfy chair.

The hotel gave us two beds for the boys, which fit comforably in the living room. There was also a couch, TV, some tables, a TV on a set of shelves, and a ceiling fan. The living room and kitchen did not have AC, but the hotel left us a fan in the room for the boys, to supplement the ceiling fan.
There is also a closet where the boys stored their clothing. The room was large, comfortable and nicely decorated, even with the two beds.

The bathroom had a tub, shower and plenty of towels. There was soap but no shampoo or other sundries. There was a blowdryer in the bedroom closet.

The bedroom had a queen size four poster bed with decorative mosquito netting draped around the posts, two end tables and a closet with plenty of storage space. There is a safe in the closet, and, I believe, an iron. The bedroom has a window but it faces a wall. Although the property is generally beautifully kept, there is some debris in the alley along that side, which abuts the next property, so keep the windows locked. There is no clock in the room, and no phone. Watch your cell phone use. The bedroom had AC, and the AC was cool, quiet and efficient.

The bed was kind of firm and bouncy - not the most comfortable. The pillows were a bit too high and firm for my and my husband's) taste.

2. Amenities
The restaurant and bar are covered but open air, and have beautiful views. The pool is very small, and the hot tub temperature varies. Food is delicious. Although the meals were fairly priced given the quality, the costs plus tax add up pretty quickly so we opted to eat food in on many mornings and for lunches. Coffee and tea were free in the morning at the restaurant, and it was a lovely way to get going in the morning.

Although there are many seats along the interesting spaces around the cliffs, I was disappointed to learn people claimed chairs with towels super early in the morning. One day I had a hard time finding shade, so I too became a 6:30 a.m. chair-claimer.

The hotel has a lifeguard who also helps tend areas near the pool and is not always watching, but you can ask him to keep an eye if you want his undivided attention. Since my son was jumping from heights and the water was a bit rough, we asked him to watch the boys (and tipped him to express our appreciation). He also led us around the waterfront on a mini-snorkeling tour. It was great. The hotel has snorkeling equipment available for guests, as well as pool floats that some brought into the ocean. Derrick was the weekday lifeguard who showed us around while snorkeling. Orlando was the weekend lifeguard.

The water was a bit rough each day, but once you're in, there was not much current - just swells. You can snorkel near the property and see some fish and coral, but I'd recommend a snorkeling excursion out to the reef (and highly recommend Sunbaby- they'll pick you up at the hotel) You enter the water by ladder - a little challenging when swells are rising and falling - or jumping in.

3. Nearby
The property has security and the front gate is kept locked. There are restaurants and other locations of interest nearby, including Rick's and LTU. A grocery store across the street accepts charge cards, and was convenient for purchasing drinks, breakfast and lunch foods and snacks. Food gets pretty pricy in this area. If you walk around outside you will quickly learn to watch for speeding cars whizzing past you on the narrow, sidewalk-less street. You may be approached by some people selling things, but you can have some great conversations. We never felt unsafe walking around - except as cars whizzed past us.

4. That je ne sais quois
If you are in Jamaica expect to smell weed and be offered weed. If that makes you uncomfortable perhaps an AI or different location might be a better fit for you. Guests here and at other locations, especially LTU, were not shy about their enjoyment.

5. Staff
The staff was friendly and helpful. The office is open during the day, but not at night. There is security at night. I was able to cash travellers' checks in the office most days, but there was also a money exchange (which charged a fee) nearby. Mauvette made suggestions and helped us out. After we expressed an interest in Jamaican patties (pastries filled with meat, seafood and other fillings) she arranged to have a driver pick some up.

Although the security guard arranged a taxi for us one day, we preferred to catch our own. The one arranged by the guard told us he would charge us $20 to get to the beach area, but quickly came down to $10 when we negotiated. That was what we paid other drivers. Don't get in a cab until you have worked out the cost.

The shuttle to and from the airport cost $20 per kid, $25 per adult each way (plus tip).

The grounds were beautiful - the gardens and birds were lovely, the views and sunsets fantastic, and the waterfront and restaurant were truly a treat. There are not very many rooms, so don't plan on hanging out with a large hotel crowd (though the staff is a great group). One night we heard singing and went to the bar, finding the waitresses and bartender were belting out a few songs as they worked.

This was an extremely lovely venue for a relaxing, fun family trip.

Catcha Falling Star provided gorgeous cliffside views, friendly service, and comfortable accommodations. They have a pool and ocean access. I stayed in the Moon. The beds were comfortable, they provided plenty of fans, and the room had both an indoor/outdoor shower. There was even a hammock and day bed on the patio. Ivan's bar was quite yummy. Andrea, Carol, Ordia, Ritchie and all the staff were kind and gracious hosts. They helped us find transportation and fun activities. Andrea did a fabulous job coordinating my friend's wedding. The resort is gated and we felt safe. I highly recommend staying at Catcha!

Spent 4 wonderful nights here and I would go back in a heartbeat. LOVED the cliffs vibe!! Our upper level condo was so cute, we couldn't have asked for a better patio to hang while overlooking the sea. The grounds are lush, the pool was very clean. A few cliffs to jump off and swim if you want. Their lifeguard Derrick is a sweet young man who will jump with you if you're frightened. Ivan's bar and restaurant is pricey, but WONDERFUL food and lovely staff. Mr. Luis at the gate greeted us with smiles, handshakes and hugs each day. They have their own driver named Freddy Cougar, who is super nice, and will take you anywhere you want to go. Only negative is our safe was broke in the room. Call ahead and make sure they have a working one if you need to lock some stuff up.

We thoroughly enjoyed my stay here!
Very friendly people, tasty food (try their conch with Jamaican Red Stripe beer), fantastic sunsets, walking distance to many local restaurants and small stores... If you want to take a tour to the waterfalls, for example, it's not so close, but there are many taxi drivers who can give you a great deal.
Highly recommend for the traveler looking to do things their own away, outside of the all inclusive environment.

We have recently returned from our fourth trip to Jamaica, so it's obvious we love it there. Our two adult children, their significant others, and we, were invited to a family member's wedding at Sandals Negril. Not being the AI type we knew we would not stay there but at one of our favorite places on the Cliffs and then a few days at the Beach. Country Country is our spot there. Due to late planning on our part, for the dates of our various stays we were able to find a place for 1 couple at Catcha Falling Star and 2 couples at Tensing Pen, our other favorite at the Cliffs. We had originally looked at the 2 bedroom + 1 bedroom in the large building at Catcha for the 6 of us and it was not available by the time we made our decision. The staff, lodging, and amenities at both resorts is beyond comparison of any place we have stayed in our lifetimes.

I had been concerned that we may not be able to have all 6 of us spend as much time together as we wanted even though the resorts are just steps away from each other. My fears were dispelled immediately when our driver from Clives, highly recommended, dropped our son and daughter-in-law off at Catcha and Andrea remembered me and insisted "the lady" get out of the van and come over to the office for a hug and some nice conversation. We had spent two extended prior visits at Catcha, which we love equally as TP. So hard to choose, we try to spend time at both, and definitely eat at Ivans. Our previous visits to Catcha we stayed in the Virgo and Sun 1 bedroom suites with full kitchen, and the Libra Cottage, so beautiful but limited kitchen facilities.

So then my husband and I checked in at TP and were as warmly greeted, like coming home. Our previous visits had been to the Pine Pillar and Rock Cottage II, and this time we chose Garden A for ourselves, and our daughter and her guy were to arrive at Garden B the next day. We advised the office of our son being at Catcha and "no problem" for them to visit with us and his sister for the length of our stay. We immediately jumped into our suits and headed down to the cliffs for a swim. We could see across the way to our son and daughter-in-law doing the same at Catcha. We then enjoyed a great evening dinner at Ivans and playing cards on the beautiful porch of Garden A at TP.

Next day, the big arrival of our daughter and her guy, usually skeptical of anything Mom tells her, on arrival at TP she was all smiles and said, "It's everything you said it was, it's amazing!" You really just have to walk in the gate of either resort and you know you have arrived in paradise. Again everyone jumped into their suits and began jumping off cliffs and the bridge, and enjoying the gorgeous views. Lunch at Ivan's at Catcha was really fun and delicious. Their soups are out of this world. This time we had the vegetable and I still can't believe how good it was. Our son and daughter-in-law loved the breakfast, especially the syrup which may be pure maple, yummm.

Our daughter-in-law could not get enough of the flowers and greenery, walking down the paths of both resorts, Catcha has well recovered from the devastation of storm Nicole. Our daughter-in-law and our son had travelled from Wisconsin so the tropics were well received after their brutal winter. They both loved the friendliness at Catcha which is beyond compare. Seeing some of the staff from our previous visits, Kenisha, Nikki, Vivienne (who is all grown up now), and especially Carol made our time there so personal. Thanks to all.

Then there are the dogs. Since our kids own Ridgebacks as well, the dogs at TP are a special added attraction. Tensing, Shuga, and Beezy hung out with us comfortably and guarded us in our comings and goings between the 2 resorts. Special mention as well to Ben at Catcha, a very sweet dog.

While there we noticed that the 3 bedroom, 3 bath Long House at TP was available, so for a small upgraded price, all six of us moved for our 2 remaining nights so we could all be together. Our kids kept their original lodgings and moved back for their last night. The guys went fishing with "Duke" and brought in a 25 pound black fin tuna. Catcha filleted it and we gave most of it away to the staff at both resorts and cooked up the rest in the fine kitchen of the Long House. We bought rice and calalloo at the little store across the road and had a fine dinner.

I can't say enough about how great the people of Jamaica are. The hotel staff, the drivers, chefs, servers, tour guides. Jamaica must be doing something right. We will be back again and again.

Thanks again to all. Next stop Catcha, hoping the Libra is available or maybe try Sagi....

Booked this resort based on having dinner there last year, which was amazing! Absolutely the best food I've tried in Negril, and the prices were reasonable as well. The view to die for! Now,...for our experience having stayed there in Jan 2014.
I can honestly say, the grounds, cliffs, and people that work at Catcha were perfect. The pool although small, was just fine for the couple people that were in it at a time, to cool off from the hot sun shining above. Drinks from Ivans rocked,...had the Rum Punch, and am craving one now as I type this. The bartenders, were a lot of fun. Only downfall, Ivans closed at 10. Our group was just getting started!
Rooms were clean, stayed with friends, in the Gemini, 1 & 2. You needed to time your showers out between the 2 rooms, because you must share waterlines, and one of you would get less pressure and colder water if both were going at the same time. Also missed a clock in our room.
Although this resort is perfect in many ways, and I gave it 5 stars, it was way too quiet for us. No one was around. I guess I am used to the action from the 7 mile beach, having stayed there most of our visits, and missed that. No disrespect for Catcha, just my own opinion.
Booked next year on the beach, but will definitely be returning for the amazing jerk chicken pasta for a dinner off our resort. YUM!!!
