“OUR FAVORITE PLACE ON 7 MILE BEACH, PLEASANT STAFF”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

I was born and raised in Jamaica but also have traveled extensively. When going back to Jamaica I look for a hotel that has a boutique island vibe w/ great accommodations. Idle Awhile is exactly what we've been looking for. You will enjoy the laid back island decor with a perfect location on the beach. The single rooms are the perfect size with a large veranda to enjoy the island breeze.

The single most important thing that will keep us coming back is Kareem at the front desk. Every time we've visited he has been so accommodating, helpful, and pleasant. He made us feel right at home.

My only complaint is the lack of Jamaican food options on the menu. The kitchen was often out of transitional food items and I was looking forward to getting a better taste of Jamaica from the hotel. We often opted to eat our more traditional meals off property.

Over all this place is an a+. I was reluctant to write this review because it is on of Negril's best kept secrets, but after our friends had their money stolen from Sandy Haven (a couple of doors down), I had to BIG UP Idle Awhile for such a pleasant stay.

Special Thanks again to Kareem.

I stayed at Idle Awhile for 6 nights in May 2012. The place was a nice change of pace from normal hotels and resorts. Idle Awhile is small and intimate. I went with my sister for our birthday and we had a really nice time. We're not too much into live and loud night life, so the slower pace and location of Idle Awhile were very nice. We took the shuttle up to the cliffs one evening and it was nice to have that flexibility. There's a great jerk chicken spot across the street and it was delicious. The hotel food is also really good- a bit pricey but really good. If you're there for the night they offer live music on the beach make sure to stay and dine in the hotel that night. I would like to especially highlight the friendliness and service of Jermaine, Richard, Aaron, Brian, Needle, Kingsley and Maria- they helped make our trip a lot of fun and relaxing.

The one note is about the bathroom in the room. While really nice- the ceiling opens to the room, so nothing done privately is really private. Make sure to share a room with someone you know well!

Overall- great stay and I will return!

Prior reviews are accurate: Spacious rooms. Delicious breakfast (banana pancakes are BOSS!). Accommodating staff. Beach location. Walk to more food, music and fun.

P.S. Eat jerk chicken and sip a rum punch with the locals at Best of the West across the street.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms face the water but you'll see it through trees.

A group of us...(6)....just completed a 5 day journey to Negril. Some in our group have been going to JA for over 25 years......others 10 years or so. All of us were very impressed with everything about Idle Awhile. The rooms were spacious....comfortable.....clean.....nicely decorated. Bathrooms very nicely appointed and clean. Housekeeping was outstanding....got on the rooms early if you so choosed and did a marvelous job. The food and bar area was wonderful. The grounds were meticulous and lush. The beachfront area clean and comfortable....the setting pristine. Beach loungers and cushions cleaned daily...all the fresh towels you needed. The facility set us up with a great driver for our off-site journeys and he was professional safe and prompt. The location was perfect....both from a beach aspect and main street aspect. We also spent a half day at the sister resort in the cliffs...Hide Awhile. Again...everything there was just as tight and wonderful....everything....staff included. I personally have been to some very nice facilities in JA and this establishment ranks with them in all regards. As a businessman I can tell you that it appears to me that the upper management of this organization are very sharp....as they have surrounded themselves with very good employees in every sector of the business. Many of these employees have been there for a good number of years. This tells me those employees are taken care of and like their work. And this shows. To be uber successful in the Hotel/Food industry....it takes a great crew of people and Idle Awhile has that. There was great teamwork amongst them and they all did a great job in making our stay wonderful. Thank you and I am sure you will see some of us....if not all of us..... again. Alex Gariup.

Room Tip: From what I saw...all rooms were lovely. It simply depends on your budget and number of people in yo...

If you are thinking of staying on the beach in Negril and may not want to book all inclusive, consider this lovely South Beach style boutique hotel on the seven mile beach.

A boutique hotel designed by Jane Issa (Head Designer of Couples hotels) - it is not only very hip and chic, but caters to families and children too. The staff are non comparable and lovely - the bar staff - especially Carlton and the crew are just always friendly and efficient!

It is not a glitzy or bling hotel, but it has what I call "class" - and that is so important.

It is located in the middle of the seven mile beach and has lovely chairs and a very South Beach style wooden deck with a shell themed Bar....good drinks and the food is always yummy. Again, it not a formal setting, so enjoy it for what it is - classy, fun, hip and very sweet.

We will always stay at Idle Awhile when we are in Negril (Or Rockhouse on the west end) if we want to stay on the beach side.

There is also a lovely new sister hotel that has just been added to the west end of Negril called Hide Awhile - another very romantic and amazing spot!

Stayed at Idle for 3 days in aug after much angst in trying to find a place that was relaxing, romantic and not an AI. It did not disappoint. Located on the 7 mile beach with probably the best beach spot, this is definitely an awesome place for anyone. We arrived late in the night and when we got there tired after a long day of travel they had everything ready and waiting for us. Check in was a breeze and the front desk staff-shane was great in getting us situated. We were given water bottles to use at their filtered water fountains on the property which is awesome since its nice and hot there-great idea. Our porter Beres was great in getting our luggage to our villa and getting us situated. We had a ground floor room but asked to switch to upstairs so as not to hear the pedestrian traffic and it was no problem.

The rooms were great just like the pictures on negrilonestop, it came with full length mirror, safe, flat screen tv, phone and free wifi. Rooms had AC and fans and patio. We had a garden view room and loved the green lush loook of the place. Didn't miss the ocean view since the beach was right there. Definitely felt like the tropics and we loved it. We sat and ate on the verandah a lot. It was our early morning spot to lounge and our late night reprieve. Definitely bring bug spray. Only compliant about the room was there was no iron we had to call for one and it came really fast and the bathroom. The bathroom is a nice size and looks great but there is no privacy which wasn't an issue for us. The issue was the shower being open means once anyone showers there was water all over the bathroom floor so all our towels went to keeping the floor dry. I didn't like walking on wet floor for a midnight bathroom break. At nights the tropic comes alive with the sounds of crickets and tree frogs which was loud but we loved it and it didn't affect us sleeping at all but if your aren't used to it could possible be a bother. We loved it.

Service was wonderful. The beach raked every morning and chairs towels and umbrellas set up for you as you walk to the beach. Once they ask you for your spot on the first day they set up in that location for you on other days. There was more than enough chairs for everyone and the chairs padding doubles as a floatie which is awesome. I can't say enough about the beach the water is crystal clear and you can enjoy seeing your feet all the way out. There are vendors on the beach selling everything and you can say yes or no. We are Jamaicans so we bought the in season fruits only that we don't usually get in the US and of course chit chat with the vendors.

Food- the welcome rum punch at chill awhile was the bomb that we ordered a second round and the steam fish dinner was delicious however pricey. We ate off the resort at local spot called sweet spice everyday the food was out of this world delicious, cheaper and huge portion size. That worked out cheaper for us on a budget.

We had a car and drove around negril went to the cliffs and just had the best time. We walked the beach during the day and at night and never felt afraid. Our night walks were wonderful and as you pass the different resorts security could be seen. The water at night was warm and wonderful on our feet and u can see fishes in the water. Very romantic. All in all this was a wonderful vacation and I would definitely recommend Idle Awhile to anyone looking for a wonderful vacation at a non AI. We will definitely be returning. we thought this place is best suited for couples, but we saw families with kids there and even some toddlers. That didn't affect or change anything for us.

Room Tip: Choose an upper level room to limit pedestrian traffic noise if traveling during peak season.

Right on the beach at Negril, with a good restaurant on site, this was a lovely place to end our Caribbean tour. The staff were superb, the room was comfortable. We didn't like the lack of glazed windows (the window openings were mesh covered with wooden louvres) or the way the bathroom was simply screened off from the room - the partition wall did not reach the ceiling so there was no privacy.

But there Re Lways workarounds and it was a delightful place!
