“Real Deal on Riu Negril - no probelm mon”
Reviewed January 30, 2011

We stayed at the Negril Club Riu Hotel Jan 15 – 22 with a group for a wedding. We have travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean ( Mexico, DR, Costa Rica, Cuba, St. Lucia,Barbados, St. Thomas. St. Martin) we always do our research by reading the reviews, asking questions and reviewing the forums. Given the bad reviews and negative comments I was impressed with the hotel, food, grounds and staff. Take the negative reviews with a grain of salt, go and have fun! Below is a summary and some detailed comments from our trip
SUMMARY
• Lots to eat and tons of variety for food 24/7 ( Anyone who can’t find something to eat should really stay at home) loved the casual dining and the fact that you could take the food out of dining area and eat anywhere – No one we were with got sick from the food
• I did my research and I took my own towels, got up early to get chairs ( I don’t like to play the chair game but when in Rome...) They really could use more chairs on the beach and around the pool
• Staff in all areas are friendly and do their best to make your vacation enjoyable - including beach vendors (these reviews painted a tainted picture of the beach vendors – go and meet the people they are really lovely...Ciiiiiiigarrreeetttts...cigars, cigars, cigars)
• Rooms, grounds and beach are cleaned daily - these staff work hard around the clock to keep this place clean
• Weather was hot both day and night with some clouds during the day – sun rise was at 6:30 AM and sun set was at 5:45 PM – leave the hair straightened at home as it is humid day and night
• Illegal substance ( gonja mon) is readily available and being consumed at the resort, on the beach etc etc..if this turns you off then you might want to pick a different location for your vacation
• Your vacation is what you make it...go and have fun, meet the people, embrace the culture, no worries mon.
Read on for more details on this resort........
ROOMS
• Rooms are nothing fancy but they are functional and cleaned daily
• We are not in our rooms much so we do not need a fancy room, however we do like to have a room in a central location – some were in building 4 which is a ¾ km walk from front lobby – if you have mobility issues ask for a room in building 1 on the ground floor. I emailed the manager 2 weeks before our departure date and asked for this and that is what I got – no problem mon
• Water in shower is HOT and powerful!!! ( there is a tub with a built in shower) we had fresh towels daily. Bring your own shampoo and conditioner. Hair dryer is also powerful!!
• Stocked fridge and liquor dispenser is an added bonus – fridge was filled every second day – but heard from some that their room was missed, no problem man, just ask the maid to get it restocked
• Beds and pillows were perfect..we shut off the air at night and put on the fan, if you need another blanket there are blankets in the closet – if you need anything else just ask the maid, no problem mon.
• No bugs in room or bed – and I would have seen them if they were there believe me!!!
• Room safe was easy to program – USE IT – we did not have any issues with theft or things going missing with any of the folks we travelled with, no problem mon

FOOD
Breakfast
• Breakfast was served daily from 7:00 to 10:30 in the buffet – everything you`d want in a breakfast buffet including a smoothie bar, bacon & eggs , made to order omelettes, croissants, fresh fruit etc etc
• We got 2 or 3 carafes of coffee and took them to the beach every morning for our own coffee club – no problem mon
Lunch
• Loved the Jerk Chicken available at 11:30 daily
• Buffet was open at 12:00 – there was also days where they set up a lunch buffet on the beach
• Lots of variety at lunch buffet – loved the nachos, pasta bar and wraps but they also had fish, soup, salade bar, cheeses, fries, burgers etc etc – again if you could not find something here stay at home!!!
• I liked the fact that you could take food out of the dining area and eat where you wanted
• This was casual dining so if you like to be waited on for lunch this is not the place for you
Dinner
• We loved the buffet and found lots of variety but there were also 3 ala cart restaurants
• We did the steak house which was good and the rest of the time went to the buffet
• Others went to Sir Andrews and Luigi`s and found it was good
• Buffet has 2 kinds of soup, salade bar sushi, carvings, Jamaican bar, a variety of meats, always different potatoes
• Assorted bread and even really good variety of desserts – try the choc cheese cake!!
• Service was excellent and even though it was busy the wait was not long, dirty plates were cleared instantly, water is filled regularly
• By the 3rd night the waiters were bringing us our red and white wine without us asking!!
After 11:00 Pizzeria
• Open from 11:00 PM to 7AM - Amazing pizza here as well as Jamaican Patties, hot entrees, dessert and salad bar

BEACH
• I`d read many negative reviews about the beach, so my expectations were very low, however I was pleasantly surprised
• Beach was raked daily and empty glasses were picked up regularly throughout the day
• YES there was a sewer smell at time during the day by the beach bar area but it did not scare us off the beach!!
• Sand was not white and fluffy like Punta Cana but it was not hard and granular like some beaches
• There was LOTS of room on the beach for spreading out and enjoying the sun and sand HOWEVER they could have used about 200 more loungers
• There are not beach huts for shade but there are trees scattered here and there for those that like shade
• If you are looking for beach bar service this is not the place for you – sit close to the bar and get your own – there was rarely a line up
• If you are looking for a pool or beach guy to get your chair for you – go somewhere else as you are on your own to get your own chairs
• YES we played to towel game and got up early to reserve chairs but we were also there from 7:00 AM til 3:00 PM and then moved to the pool bar til sunset time – if you do not want to get up early to reserve that special spot, go up to the bar area and bring down a chair – there are always chairs to be found but not right in front of your nose
• SUNSETS - 3 out of the 6 nights were AWESOME!! See pictures I posted!!!
• BUGS – again we were on the beach for 7 days (7:00 AM til 3:00 pm) and we got a few bites but not many (did not have bug spray on) – some people did get bites, however it seemed they were drawn to some more than others. I usually get eaten alive but I did not get many bites at all and neither did my hubby or kids.
• WATER – water is very calm in the bay and in the morning you will see sting rays touring the shore line – water was warm the entire time we were there. It is not as clear as it is down the beach - way but who cares, it’s wet and warm
• BEACH AREOBICS – daily on the beach at 10:00 with the ever so fit Batman ( it’s worth checking it out ladies as this guy has a 8 pack!!) no problem mon!!!

BARS
• Lobby bar, 2 bars in the entertainment area, swim up bar, beach bar – all served the same drinks and service was good whether you tipped or not - no top shelf liquor, they do have diet pop
• Yes – there was a foul smell at the swim up bar and at times at the beach bar
• Swim up bar got rowdy in the afternoon and the pool water was nasty..join in the fun, but if you don`t like the rowdy behaviour or the murky pool water I`d suggest you move to the beach or the activities pool..no problem mon

BEACH WEDDING
• There were up to 3 weddings a day at this resort so they have this down pat
• Weddings take place in 3 different locations on the beach, the one we attended was at 4:00 and was at the far end of the beach
• After a quick 10 min ceremony punch was served, pictures were taken and dinner was served at the Steak House – we then had the disco for a private party from 9 – 11 ( it only opened at 11:00 for the public)
AMENITIES / ACTIVITIES/SECURITY
• Towels – we never had a problem with towels and we did use the ones at the resort but we also brought our own. You will get towel cards that you need to hand in when you check out
• Water Aerobics on the beach – did I mention the instructor Batman??
• Bands on the beach and dance lessons – one day there was a steel drum band on the beach, they had reggae lessons and set up a beach buffet. One night there was a beach party with fire dancers and bonfire.
• Another day they another band set up and vendors, games food etc.
• Lots of activities around the pool and at the beach if you wanted to join – if you didn`t , no problem mon
• LOTS of areas to sit and visit and chill – main lobby was huge, entertainment area provided tables and comfy chairs and bars in close proximity
• Internet – free wifi in the huge lobby area or you could go on the computers that were available for a fee – we brought our Ipod touch to go on the internet at any time
• Check in was very fast and efficient and check out was the same
• Ask for a second key if you need one for your room
• Gym – there is a gym with a treadmill, free weights and elliptical
• Security – we had read the reviews about the shooting and lack of security and can honestly say that we felt very safe the entire trip – there was security on the beach, by the rooms, in the common areas. If you left the beach you were asked for your room number( not sure why and what they would have done if you never came back??!!) I ran by myself in the AM but not off the property but did see some people running on the beach off the resort
• Shopping and Vendors on the resort – there are 3 small shops on the resort where you can buy toiletries, sunglasses, sun tan lotion and even bathing suits and towels. There is a small jewellery store as well.
• Currency – we took American money and used it at the resort for tipping and off the resort at the vendors and Rick’s Cafe , no problem mon

EXCURSIONS
We only did one trip – the Snorkle trip to Rick’s Cafe
• We paid $45 a person for this trip which included a ride on the catamaran along Bloody Bay and over to 7 Mile Beach then on to the Cliffs to snorkel at the caves and then on to Rick’s Cafe
• beer and rum punch was included on the trip as well ( no food so take snacks if you need to)
• Snorkel equipment was provided
• We left at 1:00 and were back at 6:15 – but we had to be at the water activities hut by 12:15 to get ready
• The catamaran can not come into shore so you need to take a little shuttle to get to the boat (you need to get in the water to board the small boat over to cat) this was a bit of a comedy show as the crew had issues docking the small boat against the cat
• The small boat also takes you into Rick’s as the bigger boats can not dock there – again this was a comedy show with them trying to dock and tie off
• DO NOT expect to see alot of sea life and if you don’t like to snorkel in rough water then stay on the boat – some did
• Rick’s Cafe is a must do – YES there are locals asking for money for the divers but just ignore them. You can go there by cab or ask Mr Party to take you there on his boat. YES it is a tourist trap but what a great place to meet some locals, check out the cliffs, listen to local music and have a red stripe

Some tips to reduce any ‘situations’ that may occur:
• Bring your own towel in case they run out and your our face cloth if you use one ( we bring loofa and throw them out when we leave)
• Bring a lanyard for your room key
• Bring an insulated mug to keep the drinks cold and sand out
• Reserve chairs in the AM if you are going to use them for the day, if not give them up for others that are looking for chairs
• If there are no chairs on the beach or at the pool use the chairs from around the bar area
• If you want to be waited on hand and foot this is not the place for you
• If you like casual dining, friendly service, warm days and nights, spectacular sunsets, safe and secure environment then you will love this place
• Don’t worry about a ting, every lil ting gonna be alright in Jamiaca mon!!!

Let me start off by saying that we were intially suppose to stay at one of the Breezes resorts. But due to a big snafu with apple we ended up at the Riu Negril. I could not have been happier. No major complaints here mon! I almost let all of the negative feedback on this forum ruin what turned out to be a great time. First I will start with the positives. The hotel was very clean. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. The bartenders were alot of fun and would hook it up with some good stiff drinks. Tips always help. Shout out to my man Daley at the beach bar. The activities crew were entertaining and attempted to get you involved. SpongeBOB is a funny guy. The night shows were good. The Michael Jackson SHOW ON THURSDAY IS A MUST SEE. Some of the others were hit or miss. The beach was nice, warm water and clear. There is a fish santuary a lil further down with cool sea shells and crabs. There is definately a beach chair race in the morning. But I believe that is the same no matter what resort you go to. Lucky for me my wife and her friend got up early to do it. You are some what secluded because there is no other hotel next to you, which I liked. There is a psuedo flea market off to the other side. Kinda hard to barter with them. Food was pretty good.Good seafood and a good overall selection. Sir Andrews and steakhouse restaraunts had good food. The Brazilian one was terrible. The room was good. We had a ocean view and liqour dispensor was excellent. Scuba Caribe crew was very nice. Ask for Natalee, she will take good care of you. We took the catamaran cruise to Rick's Cafe, it was a great time. Snorkling was very cool. Saw lots of lionfish. Rick's was cool, watching those crazy people jump is fun. It is a little pricey and the beratting for money is annoying. A great sunset on the way home. Now the negatives. Like a said no major complaints. All of the bars close at midnight which is lame. Only the disco is open late and sometimes closes early if there is no one there. But there is atleast the liqour dispenser to help. There was a total lack of music throughout the hotel. I mean come on it's jamaica. I would of thought there would be the Bob Marley cd, on repeat, just pumpin all through the hotel. They did have a band at the beach party and pool party and they were really good. And finally they had a stell drum band on our last day. Cigarettes are crazy expensive in the gift shop($11 bucks). Buy them on the beach from the Ciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigarettes guy for $8. Brazilian Restaraunt was gross. Some of the beach chairs were broke, i could see how the lack of chairs could cause drama but we dealt with it with no problems. Sometimes had a shortage of towels, but if you asked the front desk nicely they would hook you up. The entertainment staff could get a little pushy sometimes but eventually got the point. This was not greatest hotel I have ever been to, definately not a 5 star hotel, but all in all a great time to be had.

We stayed at Riu hotels previously and were quite pleased with our experience in other countries. For the first 5 nights from 12/22 to 12/27 we stayed at Riu Palace Tropical Bay. I was really impressed with the level of quality of amenities, quality (and quantity) of food and excellent services provided. And I am saying that even after the negative experience we had on the last day of our stay. I stayed there with my entire family (five of us).

Due to the blizzard in New York our flight was canceled but I was able to change my flight to 12/28 and needed just one more night at the hotel. Hotel was completely booked for the next several days but our agent was able to get us two rooms at ClubHotel Riu Negril just next door to Riu Palace.

What a difference from the previous 5 days! We needed an extra bed as we requested (3 people in one room and two in the other). It took me 5 phone calls and 6 hours to get it by 11pm. The second room had a nonworking air conditioner, no shower curtain and no shampoo/soap. This was not addressed by the staff at all. Since this was our last day, I requested at least a rate change for the room that was not prepared and problems that were not fixed on my request. I had to wait 25 minutes at the front desk for the manager who would not talk to me until she checked in all the guests that were on line after me. After that the manager just gave me some generic e-mail address and told me she can not do anything (how about at least saying sorry for my experience). I did no argue with anyone and all I wanted is to address the problems. I am not sure if this is because the second Riu is understaffed or simply provides much lower service than next door Riu Palace (just want to mention no towels at the pool throughout the day among other general problems such as a line to get into a buffet restaurant at night, food was quite simple and was gone if you got there too late etc).

So my advise - pay a little extra and go to a more expensive next door Riu Palace Tropical Bay.

Just got home from Jamaica Riu Negril where nothing is a problem "It's only a situation".
Believe me I read all of the reviews before I left and was quite concerned about this resort. Now I am left wondering what the heck hotel these people who wrote these harsh reviews were staying at.
I have been to many (and I mean many) all- inclusive resorts on many different islands and I can say that this is the first all-inclusive that I have not been sick at due to bad ice or food. The rooms were great and we loved the stocked mini-bar for a drink in the room or a water. Tipping does goes a long way and our room never was without pleanty of towels only a lack of face cloths. There is good wine to be found you just have to be persistant in asking and plan on tipping. Food was great at the buffet with lots to choose from and always a location to eat at any time of the day or night. A la carte restaurants were nice for a change but I would have rather had the food at the buffet.
I was impressed with the fact that management allows the employees of the hotel to eat with the hotel guests. It says quite a bit about the management employee relationships and I realized this when I spoke with many of the employees. They are generally happy people in Jamacia and I enjoyed each and every one I met. Always a kind greeting, a story to tell and I never found a unhappy employee all week.
Beach was not the best I have every seen however a walk down the beach to the other Riu and you will find georgeous sand and swimming. I am not normally an ocean swimmer but was in every day as it was beautiful. Towels were plentiful at the beach hut and we never had to wait for one.
Beach chairs - yes the resort could use quite a bit more - however there are many people who get up at 6 am to hold chairs at both the pool and the beach. We never got up at 6 am to hold a chair and when looking for a chair spoke to the people at the beach or pool to see how long they were sitting empty and reserved with a towel. If there were chairs that people had not been using for over an hour we just removed their towels and sat down. We never had a problem or confrontation and people should realize that if they leave their chair then it's free game for anyone looking for one.
The vendors at the beach were fantastic people just trying to make a living and I never felt obligated to purchase. I did however enjoy their stories and this is what travelling is all about .... getting to know the people and their home.
I did appreciate reading about the mosquitos/sand fleas and took lotion for the itching at night. I don't think they were sand fleas because the bites I received were at night watching the entertainment. Glad to have the heads up on this ahead of time and was able to be prepared.
The resorts hosted many weddings the week we were staying so there were many celebrations going on. Perhaps the reviewer who didn't like the noise has never been to a fun wedding celebration and we have nothing to be ashamed of thank you very much.
It was a wonderful trip and resort and I would have no hesitation returning to this resort in the future.
Take everything negative you read about this resort with a grain of salt and take note of only the suggestions that people have to offer in their reviews.
Make your trip a rewarding one by getting to know the people you meet and not by setting high expectations. Don't sweat the small stuff you are on vacation and with this attitude you will always be pleasantly surpirsed.

We arrived by taxi and check-in was fast, no waiting. We ended up in Building 4 at the far end of the resort. There are 4 buildings, 1 closest to everything including the noise, 2 good choice or 3 but 4 is at the end of the world as I know it. We were given ocean front room which looked right out into the ocean and beach. The whole time we were there a couple in their 70's decided to sunbathe in the nude, not a pretty site....our next door neighbors were 4 women who came in drunk every evening and we listened to their conversations until they finally passed out, and there was the couple above us who left their patio door open so everynight we listened to her cries of oohs and aahhhs, the only thing missing was the headboard banging. All in all I have to say we were entertained. There are very few chairs at this end also and if you end up in building 4 be prepared for a long walk to everything.
Our rooms were clean, king bed, cleaned every day, the food was ok and shows ok.
There was one bartender who name is Paul the Bartender aka The Singer, what a great voice, he was at the bar in the lobby every evening and he would put his music on and just start singing as he served you drinks, look for him, amazing voice.
The worst part of the trip was having to get up early to reserve 2 chairs on the beach, too many chairs are broken or useless and I am an early riser anyway so i would grab a book and save my 2 chairs and sit and watch as people would come out and start the mad rush of saving chairs, if you want to be at the pool, all 300 chairs at both pools were saved by 7:30am and the same goes for the beach, after 8am forget about finding a chair, the management needs at least 100 more chairs. You will witness near fights and arguments over chairs but its what to expect with so few chairs and people rushing to save chairs only to go back to their room and come out at 10 or 11 in the morning. One guy came out when I did, saved his 2 chairs and we did not see him and his wife until 11:30.
I would return to this resort, I got exercise, entertained, food was ok, nice beach, beautiful weather, great drinks, not watered down, good service, for the cost it was a good deal.

We stayed at Club Negril from Jan 21 to Jan. 27, 2011. After reading all the reviews before we left I was a little apprehensive. Let's start from the top. The ride to the resort is 1 1/2 hrs. Roads are OK - lots to look at. Check in was painless and speedy. We were in building 2 along with the two other couples that vacation with us. Rooms are OK - nothing special. Plenty of towels - but never a wash cloth in any of our three rooms. They were always cleaned early in the day.

Yes, you do have to "reserve" chairs by the beach if you want some shade. We had an early riser in the group so he handled that each day. We always ended the day at the pool - but much more to do on the beach.

Beach/Pool Bar drinks were fine - better at the lobby bar.

Wi-Fi in the lobby worked great - too bad they don't have access in the rooms - but we survived.

Food - was OK - nothing special - same stuff pretty much everyday. Breakfast was good, but pretty hard to screw that up. Lunch - more variety would have been great - but the jerk chicken hut was always a hit. We dined at the steakhouse twice - both times OK. Sir Andrew was a nice change from the buffet. Luigi restarant was OK too. Plenty of fruit at the buffet along with breads and cheese. Main entree was sometimes interesting. Ice cream was always runny - hard to make a cone with melted ice cream. OH WELL.

We went on the Black River, YS Falls and Rum Tour - our guide was FANTASTIC. Nicola was very informatiive about Jamaican Culture and daily life. Harvey our driver and Nicola made the tour an exciting one and full of infomation. THANK YOU. Learning about the country is the reason why we travel - well warm weather has a lot to do with it too.

The weather was great - maybe a shower everyday - but it only lasted 5-10 minutes tops. Not enought to ruin a vacation.

All in all it was a very nice trip - will we return to the RIUClub----probably not----will we return to Jamaica----probably not. We did Negril -- time to move on. Punta Cana here we come in 2012. Any comments on where to stay?

We wound up at the Riu Club Hotel after doing the 5 Square Apple Deal-Negril. We figured we would after reading the reviews. Let me start by saying this was our 5th trip to Jamaica which we love and we did NOT let the resorts shortcomings ruin our trip..
Lets start with the good : We were lucky and had a good housekeeper so our room was cleaned daily, she did provide extra pillows and towels promptly. Nice size room with large bathroom. We were lucky to be in building 2 as it's very large and a lot of walking is required to get to anything from the rooms. The front desk staff was nice and helpful, quick checkin. Bloody Bay is a beautiful location and an interesting walk which we did daily, sometimes twice. Gorgeous views from everywhere.

Now the bad: We arrived in our room to a few issues, broken shower, broken TV, no remote, and smashed clock. All were fixed except clock, they had no more for us. Food was plentiful but very generic. NO chefs really seen, just "cooks" barely. Management should be ashamed of the lack of food holding skills, the food that is prepared nicely is then covered and held under weak hot lights so it's always soggy or dried out. Should be more fresh cooking to order. You wont starve but there is no gourmet.
The sand is what the reviews say, poor and rocky. Such a shame. The chair issue is ridiculous.. way too few chairs for so many guests. Seriously. The staff is hit and miss, a few very nice and others wont even look at you. If this had been our first all inclusive, it would have been our last, sorry to say.
I wont whine about the small stuff but I wont return to a Riu. I will be back to Jamaica though.
If you have booked already dont panic but be ready to relax and make the best of it. Happy to answer any specific questions..
Weather was best of any trip we ever had though, that helped alot and I almost forgot the Jerk hut on the beach, a must do, the best food there by far.. spicy sauce great too.
