We just stayed at the riu negril from June 28-July 5! I had also read the reviews and was a bit nervous. We travel often and this trip was booked because the price was right! So we decided to give it a shot! We went with 3 couples and it was my honeymoon (we married a couple months ago). Upon arrival we were upgraded to ocean front! However, the first room the fan was really noisy so we switched to room 2218 and the air conditioner was noisy but we said screw it cuz by then we were a bit aggravated. We dealt with it. I will say the ocean front rooms are pretty quiet as far as noise of people walking down halls since they are not on the long hall part. So I recommend these ocean front if u don't like loud noise all hours of night. The refrigerator was so cold in room 2218! We were impressed there. Other then that rooms are out dated but for the price we paid - it worked. House cleaning kept it clean.
Food was good. However, just as everyone else said u have to book 2 days In advance for restaurants! And u must be in lobby waiting before 8am if u want a spot! So yes that was a pain! The jerk chic at lunch on beach was AMAZING! Drinks were ok. All rail. Nothing else. So not much to choose from as far as brands. Shows were good-average. Spa was small but the massage itself was really great!! Beach very calm and always chairs available. We had talked with one of the managers when she came by to ask us about our stay during dinner and were told they are updating 2015. Which this hotel really needs. Also I did notice there wasn't much lawncare maintenance. Grass was straggly and while walking on grass, my foot fell in a small but deep hole. Luckily I was ok just banged my knee and rattled everyone as I caught myself. The hole is almost hidden so be careful walking in the grass by the 2 building! This hotel needs some TLC but All in all it was a good trip for the $$.

I spent two weeks from 19th June booked with Thomson however this is only a 3.5* not the top end hotels I usual stay at in Jamaica
Having said that the hotel is spotless the grounds are truly beautiful the staff are excellent .

Considering we were in Jamaica the Jamaican selection of food was not good either very salty or so bland you couldn't eat it accke and Salt fish is the national dish in the two weeks I was there it was only served twice !! Peppered steak for breakfast ... I don't think so as for queuing up to book an al carte 2 days in advance don't waste your time the so called Italian is not .

Even though the entertainment team work extremely hard are very friendly I think the show time they do in the evening is very over indulgedent and spoils the atmosphere when the bands are so good such a shame they have to stop for show time.

If you want good service a lovely beach I would without a doubt recommend this hotel don't listen to the negative reviews .

Room Tip: 1st or 2nd building on the high floor

My husband and I were here for a week in April. We had an amazing time. The staff were great to us and our maid Yvonne was wonderful. The night entertainment was great. The steel drum band was by far our favourite!

We visited the Riu Club Hotel in Jamaica. Staying for two weeks.
Do not believe the reviews left by other visitors, the blocks 3 and 4 were only 7 mins max walk from reception (we timed it) and thats on a very slow walk. Yes, maybe block 1and 2 are more suitable for disabled visitors but 3and4 are fine if your able bodied. the hotel does however carry out maintenance during the day so we had a few days with disturbed siestas. Do tip the housekeeper a couple of dollars on the bed and she will ensure you have your beds made up and clean towels and even throw in a towel sculpture on the bed for you. Air con was quite noisy although, after a few cocktails you didn't seem to notice it as much.
The food was fantastic lots of variety, salads, lots of mains, carvery's pizza sushi and puddings (but puddings are a little bit bland) breakfast was great lots of variety with freshly cooked eggs pastries fruit and real bacon too. If you pick a table on the first day try to stick to it because the waiter/ waitress will look after you really well with drinks and coffee then we tipped her n the last day of our holiday. The steak restaurant was very good and I hope you have a good appetite costs you'll need it ,but you do need to book 2-3 days in advance at reception.
The Gourmet restaurant was a little disappointing. We felt rushed and the food wasn't that great on the night. Don't wear shorts to this one or they won't let you in? Many were turned away or told to come back when they've changed. The white wine was not nice, far too sweet so we stuck to red.
Entertainment was exceptional with the entertainment staff putting everything into their productions, the visiting acts were also amazing. Shows started quite late though ( 9-9.30pm start )
Staff couldn't do enough for us and we're very friendly. Hotel is slightly dated but due a refurb booked for next year now. Trips were a little hit or miss with one of the Bob Marley tours taking a min of 5 hours on the coach (not my idea of a day trip)
The boat trip to Ricks Cafe was very good, jump at your own risk though, as someone was killed tomb stoning from the cliffs last week. Watching is free though, unless the kids beg you for money
For the boat trip to Ricks use the sailing people in the little sailing cabin on the beach it's cheaper (55 dollars) and a better experience. Dolphin Cove was good and only 40 mins drive from the Hotel. You can swim, pet and play with the dolphins, stroke the sharks and touch/ kiss the sting rays.
Christine the Thomson rep was great, and very helpful and knowledgable, but don't bother to book an upgrade to premier class on flight home (2 for 1 deal) through the rep at the hotel cos Thomson won't honour it once onboard plane. We had out tickets confirmed at the hotel then got told they weren't valid on the plane so had to sit in economy. The checking at the airport was a joke but probably because they had a new system implemented that day without a chance to learn how to use it first,
Wifi signal in the room was good although you have to pay extra and the Spa was good value for money, I had a nice relaxing facial and Hubby had a massage. Beach was lovely and you don't have to rush to get a sunbed as there's plenty. They have a Beach barbecue everyday at 12 mid day for jerk chicken.
Be polite and say "no thanks " to the beach vendors and they leave you in peace and barter if you do want to buy anything.
Taxi's to Time Square and Downtown are cheep (20 dollars )but you only need 1 hour as there's not much to see as all the shops sell the same stuff. Do book the Mobey Lounge for your return as it does really round off your holiday. And they serve good alcohol, coffee sandwiches and pastries
Would definitely like to go back again. A great time was had by all. Five star Hotel. xxxxx
