If you are considering a half-day excursion, don't hesitate to schedule this one! I was the only one in my group who was willing to make the long journey from Negril to Floyd's Pelican Bar, so we all agreed on Booby Cay instead. If you are staying in Negril on 7 mile beach, you will most likely be able to walk down the beach from your resort and find a boat captain who will take you out to the island for a small fee.
We took a glass bottom boat from our resort on Bloody Bay and snorkeled for about an hour, then landed on Booby Cay Island. If you just take a boat straight to the island, it's probably a 15-20 minute relaxed ride. This tiny island is a beautiful, unspoiled paradise. There is a small sandy stretch of beach and shallow water on one side, and an old reef and rocks that rise about four feet on the other side.
Our boat captain walked us down a little trail through the trees onto the rocky side of the island to show us how beautiful it was, and we were not disappointed! He found a live urchin in the shallow rocky water and brought it up to show it to us, and we found lots of unique small shells and sea anemone skeletons (can't take those with you, they will break into a million pieces). Make sure to take your camera because there are many picturesque spots on the little island!
There are some local guys who go out to catch lobster and fish several times per day, and they will grill it right there on the beach for you for $20-25 per person, well worth the money. Be sure to bring your own drinks, as there are none available on the island. We stayed at an all-inclusive for a week and this was by far the best meal of our entire trip. Absolutely delicious!
Bring: Water shoes (sea urchin and rocks), camera, bug repellent, extra $ for grilled food, cooler with drinks
