The 2nd part of our Jamaica vacation, stayed at RIU Palace Tropical Bay in Negril Feb 26 to Mar 2 2013. Again we stayed in a couple different rooms to get the expierience, 1st day in a partial ocean view/garden view room. Did not like the 2 double beds pushed together but the room was nice. Rest of trip moved to the Ocean view room with a king bed. Much better & view was nicer, was able to see the weddings take place each day. Food & drinks were good, service was good-Special thanks to Nicola & Spence. The beach was really nice, walked down to the RIU Hotel which is pretty nice also. Stopped in the middle of both resorts at "Natures Office" & had fresh lobster hand picked by my boyfriend, so yummy. Not a lot of kids at the time we went which was a plus. Overall nice resort !

The trip from the airport to the resort was about hour and half. It was worth the ride to see the towns and country side. Once we arrived at the resort the staff greeted us with a big hello and cold drink. Checking in was a breeze with no problems and they took us to our room. The room was a oceanfront 6210 with a great view of the beach from the balcony. The sunsets from our room was great.
The staff at the resort went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. If you passed a staff member while walking they always checked to see how it was going. The maids in the morning and in evening did a great job.. no problem mon..We also had a towel animal on the bed when returning to our room. The mini bar was also very well stocked. One night the Appleton Brandy bottle ran dry and one phone call to front desk and ten minutes later it was restocked.
We stayed at the resort with four other couple friends and every night we would meet in the lobby bar for drinks. Tony in the lobby bar did an awesome job of taking care of us. After the first night all I had to say was "Tony the usual".
The food was very good. The buffet always had a good selection. they do have lobster night so make sure to check which night and do not miss it. Breakfast in the morning was also no problem mon always had a good selection. They do have four special restaurants the "Krystal" fusion, the "Hakuchi" japanese, the "Rimini" italian and the "Bloodbay Steakhouse". The first three I would recommend both for service and great food. The steakhouse had a good steak and lobster but the service sucked. When we asked others around the resort same response for the steakhouse.
The jerk hut on the beach for lunch is great, you need to experience the taste. The chicken is very good ask for your favorite white or dark. The sausage is awesome. I would go to lunch buffett which is only couple of steps from the jerk hut and always grab a sausage from the hut.
The pool was nice and a very helpful staff at the pool bar. The entertainment around the pool was fun.
The beach is one of the best beaches we have stepped onto. The soft white sand and the warm blue waters of the ocean. The water is so clear you can see your feet when standing shoulder deep. We never had a problem finding places to sit, sun or shade. The walks up and down the beach are very entertaining. If you go towards the other Riu you will find the locals have stands setup in the park along the beach. Very willing to barter. Some vendors do walk the beach but they are not allowed to come above the high water mark. The staff makes sure they respect the line. If a vendor asks and you say "No Thanks" they move on. The best part of the beach is the sunset. The colors on the water and in the sky is the best, Don't Miss It.
We did leave the resort couple of times. Tubbing on the great white river is very good. The catamaran ride that picks you up on the beach and takes you to Rick's Cafe is worth the trip. They stop along the way for hour of snorkeling on a reef and then tour down coast to Rick's. Rick's cafe is a do not miss stop. It's amazing to watch the cliff divers.
With all this said we would return to the "Riu Palace Tropical Bay" this had been one of are better Riu's to visit.

Room Tip: either get oceanview or the best is oceanfront rooms in block six or five

Just returned from 5 days at the RPTB. Overall we were very pleased with our stay. The food was plentiful and adequate.
The drinks left something to be desired. It was the opinion of our group that it was do to the water from the fountain mixes. We made similar drinks in our room using the bottled mixes provided and they tasted fine.
The entertainment staff was one of the most freindly and helpful I've experienced in years of travel. The nightly shows were OK but the daily games and interaction were outstanding.
One major complaint is the lack of adequate restrooms poolside only one for each gender, often out of order and as a result pretty disgusting.

Room Tip: Stay away from roadside rooms if at all possible. Traffic creates a lot of noise at night.

This hotel should not be rated a 5 star more like a 3.5 star. Rooms are dated and smell moldy and found a roach. The beds were a little too hard for my liking. The food was great, so much selection even for myself as a vegetarian had alot to choose from. We ordered room service first night we arrived, not much selection on the menu could use a few more choices. The people are great in Jamaica very friendly and social. The beach was beautiful, great water so clear you could see your feet. Not much shade on the beach, but look for a tree for afternoon relief. We enjoyed their entertainment during the day, played bocce, sand bag toss, night time entertainment we missed a couple of nights but the shows that we did catch were great. We watched the sunset everynight which was breathtaking. We enjoyed our fernets and cosmos everynight at the 24hour bar upstairs. We stayed in Montego Bay last year and loved it, if only they had Negril's beach i would go every year. In saying that we love Jamaica but will not return to this resort. We have been to other Riu hotels, and this i have to say is not one of our favourites.

Room Tip: Rooms facing main road were too noisy at night.

Highly recommend this place!!

Food selection at the buffet was good, always fresh meat, cheese, vegetables and fruit... pizza/pasta bar was great and that chef was very friendly, every night had something good being served at the door, lobster one night, turkey, roast, lamb etc.... sometimes the carrots or potatoes were not cooked all the way, but there was always more to choose from... the mashed potatoes were seasoned a few different ways during the 8 days we were there, and they were always delicious lol Dessert selection was really good, lots to choose from :)

All of the staff was friendly and helpful, get you anything you need anytime.

The rooms were clean and even the garden view rooms have a bit of a view to the ocean from the balconies, and you could hear the ocean at night if your door was open. 4 - 26'ers is your mini bar! Bar fridge was always full of pop, beer and water with extra 1litre's of water beside it in case you started running low. Room service 24hrs (menu could be improved a bit, i suggest pizza??) Beds were ok, could be better mattresses, but hey, they were clean. Always had hot water (first resort ever with good hot water). shower curtains are not long enough, so some water gets on the floor... just dont throw your clothes there and you are fine :)

Daily and nightly entertainment was entertaining, a better sound system would make it amazing... dancers were really good! Unique was my favorite :) The entertainment staff at the hotel were alot of fun too and were always interacting with everyone.

Premium liquor in your room and at every bar, decent drinks on the menu (I liked the Caribbean orange), but they will make you any drink you want.

Free wifi thought the hotel and even good enough in the rooms to watch videos/movies etc online.

The resort is not too big, refreshing after the couple of larger ones I have been to recently, and if you find it too small... walk down the stunning beach to the right and there is another RIU, with a disco and more bars to party at... go to the left and it is all beach, until the point that splits the area between bloody bay and the 7 mile beach!! You can rent jet ski's and check it out from the water, (avoiding the pushy vendors on the actual beach).... snorkeling is also really good near there, you can get a private guy to take you out right from the beach!! Natures office is a bar on a little piece of land between the RIU's, wonderful little slice of paradise <3

I recommend taking the motels taxi's rather than excursions, they will take you anywhere u want, privately, and for less. It is safe, they value the tourists and treat you like gold. Negril is only $10 bucks a person by cab, (check ot the sweet & Spice restaurant in Negril, soooo good!), Rick's Cafe is also nearby, $20 bucks per person round trip and if you go by cab, you can beat the tours and get a good seat on the upper deck :) Stay clear of the "market" behind the burger king, very pushy! But the sunshine mall and all other shopping was really good.

only things i could really complain about is all the bread tasted stale (more stale by the day)... and there wasnt much to eat after midnight, snack bar was always out of pizza by then, little sandwiches (with stale bread) and they didnt refill it.... and not much good on the room service menu... not really big complaints lol

I am going back next year for sure :)

On arrival we were greeted by the staff with a drink and quick check in. They took us to our room, which was ready when we checked in, in building 5, 5202, we settled in. We liked the view and the balcony. The room meet our expectations and then sum. Housekeeping kept the room very clean and the mini bar stocked. If you need anything in the room just leave a note and they will take care of it. The hotel and grounds are very well kept. This hotel has one of the best beaches in Negril. Very long and plenty of beach chairs. We stayed on Seven Mile beach but felt this beach was better. The beach was clean, water was clear and warm. You can walk out a long ways and still touch bottom. The food at the buffet was very good and met our needs. Didn't try the other restraunts. The bar staff is always ready to serve you top, shelf brands on request. They also came out on the beach and served us! Try the daily special drinks.. All the employees had a smile and were friendly and ready to help you. The pools are small but the beach is the best. The entertainment staff keeps things going at the pool area and with stage shows each night. Negril has the best sunsets. With a drink in hand it's not to be missed. The vendors along the beach are friendly and will barter with you. If your are not interested a no thank you does the trick and they will leave you alone. We stayed at the Riu Montego Bay and feel this one is better. A 15 min. walk up the beach and you can also check out the Riu Negril. We can't wait to go back again!

Great Hotel, fantastic staff, lovely room, super food, entertainment was good and everything including beach was close by; well done Rui Group you always come up tops we will always choose Rui as no other group can touch them.
On the downside the pool was a little small but the hotel was really a super place to stay and one we would stay in again.

Room Tip: All rooms were well placed as the layout of the resort was really well planned.
