“Great food and beach”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

Riu resort was fabulous and the people in the front desk were amazing. The chef was always around asking people how the food was. We asked him if there was going to be lamb served anytime soon. He said come tomorrow and man he had lamb ready for us. The food was fantastic and plentiful. All the staff were very polite and pleasant.
The beach was beautiful and clean. The water was clean and warm. I would go back in a flash and would recommend this resort to all, couples families, friends.

Room Tip: they gave us a room that someone smoked in and stunk all week.

I read these reviews for months leading up going to RUI Palace Tropical Bay, so i fell compelled to write a review now i have returned.

We stayed at the hotel from the 2-16th of January for and the trip was for our honeymoon.

Transfer from the airport to the hotel was great, it wasn't a private transfer, as discribed in the package we booked through Thomsons, but in the same breath, there was only 1 other couple travelling with us, so no great shakes. When arriving at the hotel, there was no arrival drink, again like discribed in our package, but again, this was no big deal.

We checked in and went to our room and the porter brought our cases soon after. The minibar in the room is great, topped up every day, so we enjoyed an ice cold Red Stripe on arrival. The rooms are lovely. I had read some bad reviews about mold and the rooms smelling so I was worried, but there was nothing to worry about. The room was very clean and as soon as you put the aircon on any musky smell (there was a slight smell) disappears. The rooms were cleaned daily. There is also a 'Turn Down Service', where the made comes to pull your bed back around 8pm, just rememeber this.......... We were on the balcony with some music on, having a drink before going out and playing some cards one evening, when we looked up, the maid was stood in the room waving at us (we hadn't heard the door knock), it scared the life out of us, it was really funny, we all screamed - hahaha. The bed we had was very hard, we woke up with a bad back the first couple of days but we let reception know and they padded it out for us, which made it a little better.

Just to warn other women out their, if coming from the UK, your hairdryer will not work as normal, the voltage must be different, but it would have been quicker for someone else to blow on my hair to get it dry, so I wore my hair up all holiday, which was no big deal.

The food is great, always a wide variety, in the mornings there is a fresh egg stand, they'll make any type of eggs you'd like, also cereals, full breakfast, waffles, pastries, fresh fruit, everything. Lunch is in the Steak House, and again, a large variety, the same again with dinner, lots of variety. The only thing i noticed (only because it's my own preference) was the salads/ fruit are not kept that cold. I like salad to be really cold and crunchy, but it was never really that cold. We tried all of the speciality resturants, we never had to get up to early to book, we'd just book for the following day if there was no availablity for that day, which was fine. I'd recommend the Japenese, it was AMAZING!!!!!!!!

The beach was beautiful and the sea is SO clear, you can walk out really far. You do get hassle from the locals on the beach, but a simple 'No thank you' and they just move on, you will get offered 'Smoke', but don't take offence, it's their way of life and again, a simple 'No thank you' and they respect your wishes and move on.

The entertainment was whatever you made of it, there is always something on all day and night, some things took our fancy, others didn't, which was no problem, they can not meet every guests expectations all the time.

One thing i will say is this. This was not a 'normal' holiday for us, it was our honeymoon. Depending what you are looking for from a honeymoon would depend weather or not i'd recommend this hotel.............. Basically, it was not what we were looking for. From speaking to the travel agents and looking at photos etc, and it also being Jamaica, i thought it would be really laid back, relaxing, ROMANTIC, but this hotel isn't. The first week there was like going to an 18-30's hotel, it was FULL of young big groups of American tennagers, you couldn't move in the pool with all the different groups, wrestling with each other, having drinking games, people putting cigarettes out in the pool, it wasn't nice. Don't get me wrong, when i'm with my friends, i'm a bit of a party animal myself (i'm only 29yrs old), but as we were on our honeymoon, I wasn't expecting this. This is of NO fault of the hotel, it is more the agent, they should have warned us of this. The evening was the same, we tried to sit at the bar for a drink after dinner and the same groups who had been drinking all day, were back around the bar being very loud and quite rude.

We visited the sister hotel down the beach (10 min walk) and to be honest, there is not much difference between the two, other than when we booked, the Palace was £500 each more expensive....................

It just wasn't what i was expecting and we're now looking at booking another 'honeymoon' and trying somewhere else. But this is my expectations, nothing to do with the hotel. The hotel is beautiful and the staff work SO hard to keep everything running so well.

I hope this helps when you're looking through the reviews if you're thinking of booking this hotel.

We stayed at the Riu Tropical Bay for 5 of the 10 days of our honeymoon. What a fabulous resort with amazing staff! From day one the bartenders and entertainment staff made us feel welcome. Marsha at the pool bar knew how to make delicious drinks and was always glad to see us. Indera was a gracious server who remembered our names and greeted us warmly wherever we saw her. Jason on entertainment staff was super fun, pulling pranks and making everyone feel involved. This place has a great team of workers who really love what they do.

We can't forget how wonderful the spa staff were too. Carolyn and Sharon always greeted us with a smile even though we never made it in for a massage.

The food is exceptional at the Negril Grill buffet. We wanted to eat there more than the specialty restaurants!! Although both the Japanese restaurant and Fusion were quite good. We did not make it to the steak house.

The only complaint I have is that our room was in a loud location near the main road. It made for interrupted sleep. But the size and cleanliness as well as decor were great by comparison.

We stayed the last 5 days at the Breezes up the beach, and every day wished we were back at the Riu tropical Bay.

If you are interested in great staff, great live entertainment each night, incredible food, and a good swim up bar, this resort has it all.

My husband and I returned from a two week stay at this resort on January 11th. I was a bit apprehensive after reading some rather negative revues. Comments about locals selling wares on the beach and the description of the beach as mirey, urchin filled and less than pristine gave us some cause for concern. I found the locals on the beach to be polite, friendly and not pushy in the least. We politely told them we were not interested in their items and were not bothered by them at all. Remember they are trying to make a living! The beach in front of the Palace was the best stretch of firm white sand to walk on, the water was perfectly clear and you could see marine life (fish, crabs, starfish and rays) on the even sand bottom (no urchins, coral, rocks or debris at all). The pool was rather small and too often filled with children playing for our liking. We prefer to spend our days at the beach anyways (it's what we come for).
The staff at the hotel were, without exception, friendly and always willing to go the extra step. When asking directions I even saw an employee actualy escort the guests to their destination. I did not find the service to be dependant on tipping, but tips were always very graciously appreciated.
The food was nicely presented and well prepared, not over salted as we have found at many other places. There was something to suit most palates at the buffet (only open for breakfast and diner). The specialty restaurants were good but the main difference was table service and fussier presentation. I agree with the reviewers who raved about the Jerk Hut. This was the tastiest jerk chicken I've had anywhere. "Jolly" mans the barbeque for lunch daily and is responsible for the seasoning and sauce as well. I must say that I continue to be embarassed by the behaviour of some visitors at the all inclusives. People who regularly pile their plates with food only to leave it behind to be thrown into the garbage. People who order one fancy drink after another only to take a sip or two and leave it behind wherever they are ie. on the stairs, on the beach, on the path etc. People who come into the buffet and go directly to the food, load-up as though they were starving and then look for a table with their plates piled high. Please, get seated first. You are an embarassment to the rest of us!
We took one excursion to shop and visit the famous "Rick's Cafe". Rick's is quite the commercial touristy spot but the location and sunset is breathtaking. The cliff divers are also quite the show. Shopping was typical, T-shirts, carvings, jewellery etc. The best pricing for Jamaican rum is actually at the airport duty free, coffee is best to buy at a local gracery store ($20/lb.)
We had a wonderful relaxing time and would return without hesitation.

Room Tip: All are good but I wouldn't want to face the road.

It's been just over a year since my boyfriend (now husband) and I visited the Riu Palace Tropical Bay but since I spend a lot of time looking at these reviews when I try and book vacations, I thought I should share my review.

We don't consider ourselves picky people. We like to drink, have fun and love the beach. This resort was above and beyond our expectations. We loved our room, loved the food, the beach is amazing and there was always something going on. Our biggest regret is that we were too snobby to try out the ocean aerobics until our last day. Super fun!

The food was great! We really liked the a la cartes so didn't mind getting up early to make reservations. We just alternated who had to get up each time. You also get to book two at a time so it's not too bad. Our favourite was the Fusion restaurant and then the Japanese restaurant.

There were locals on the beach that did try to sell you various things. We didn't find this to be a super huge issue. Most resorts in the South are usually like this. If you leave the resort, also, be prepared to run into locals. Again, we knew we were going to a country different from ours, and that's just what it was. Different. No big deal.

We loved the excursion that takes you on a booze cruise, snorkeling and to Dunn's River Falls. It's a long trek but definitely worth it.

All in all, we really liked this trip and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: We had a corner suite on the third floor overlooking the wedding area. It was great!

Family of 10, 3 generations, all agreed it was best place ever. Clearest water, fine white sand, beach meticulously maintained. Friendly staff who often inquired if they could assist us and if we were enjoying their island. They are rightly proud of Jamaica.
I asked a chef at lunchtime if we might get conch fritters sometime and he said to wait 15 minutes. He returned with the batter and fried up enough for us all. The food selections are varied from attractively presented appetizers, copious salad selections and many varieties of sweets. Several local fruits, fish and entrees are also offered.
Our daughter and family had their flight cancelled by Delta so they were delayed by a day. When they arrived they were upgraded to oceanfront rooms. Now THAT was thoughtful!

We were married in Jamaica 8 years ago and alway looked forward to the opportunity to go back. This time we brought with us 6 other couples and we were ALL disappointed in this hotel.
The rooms were small however comfortable and clean. The resort is small and very little to do. The nightly entertainment left alot to be desired. The food was a HUGE disappointment. The staff were reasonable nice however nothing like they were in Ocho Rios. Perhpas it was because we had stayed at a Sandals resort the first time ...but we didn't have the same warm receptive feeling here.
The beach was decent but i've seen nicer and did not have that nice white sand one would expect to see in Negril. I will return to Jamaica but NOT this resort.
