First of all, some background: This was our first time in Jamaica. I have limited travel experience, but my girlfriend has traveled all over the world, including parts of the Caribbean. I am in law school and my girlfriend is starting her career as a teacher so we didn’t have unlimited money to spend on our vacation.
Where to stay in Negril: No matter where what hotel you stay at, stay on the cliffs. When we were planning our vacation I looked into nearly every hotel in Negril. We went back and forth about where to stay, but we decided on the cliffs and we were beyond content with our decision. We visited the beach on most days and loved it; however, we also liked being able o return to the peace and quiet of Home Sweet Home. The beach is wonderful—one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. There are plenty of bars to stop for a red stripe and enjoy the view of the azure water from the comfort of a lounge chair. It is, however, fairly crowed and lined with hotels and resorts. In other words, the beach is busy. The locals are keen on attempting to sell you everything from crafts to jet ski rides. Almost all are friendly, but the repeated solicitations grow old. Additionally, the beach can be loud and we heard it can get louder at night depending on where you are on the beach. We enjoyed our visits to the beach, but by the mid afternoon we were ready to return to Home Sweet Home.
Experience at HSH: We loved it. HSH is a quiet hotel where you can relax and feel, as the name suggests, at home. The location on the cliffs is wonderful. We jumped in the water and went snorkeling almost every morning. The sunsets are also breathtaking. Every night we would sit on our balcony with a glass of rum and watch the sunset—life just can’t get much better. Most the booze cruises form the resorts on the beach would sail to right in front of HSH to watch the sunset. The staff was also great. Charlie was more than accommodating and friendly. We actually have plans to grab a drink when he visits Seattle. Terry the chef, beyond being an excellent cook, is extremely friendly. When I said that I had an interest in cooking, she invited me back to the kitchen to teach me the basics of Jamaican cuisine. The rooms, while not fancy, were extremely comfortable.
Why the negative reviews: If you are as obsessive as I am about finding the perfect place to stay, any negative reviews probably give you pause. After reading these reviews, I think they are mostly the result of varying expectations. HSH is not a resort where the staff dotes on you or where rooms look like they are from a five star resort. It is a comfortable, safe (we never had any concerns) and relaxing place in a wonderful location. Come here if you don’t mind some chipped paint and painted over light switches.
Overall: Amazing vacation and a great place to say.

I have stayed at many hotels in Negril and my favorite is Home Sweet Home. It is clean, and affordable. Best of all, it is quiet and the views off the property are the best. I go to the beach a couple times during my stay and always come back to HSH for the peace and quiet. The food at the restaurant is great.

All of the staff were wonderful and the owner, Charlie truly wanted us to have a positive experience at the resort. Our cliffside suite had the privacy we desired. We only ate breakfast at the resort, but it was delicious each day- Terry is an amazing cook with just the friendly personality you'd want to greet you to start your day. The resort is walkable to the 7 mile beach and the lighthouse and west end- a resort too far in either direction would probably have required us to get a taxi. We enjoyed amazing sunsets and moonsets from our balcony and were able to start our morning with a jump off the cliff before breakfast. The room (cliffside suite) had a refrigerator, which was a nice surprise. There was also a TV, which we didn't use. The jacuzzi wasn't hot, which was a little disappointing. We really had a wonderful time here and we felt like this really was our "home sweet home" in Negril.

My wife and I stayed at HSH to kick off our honeymoon and have no regrets. Spectacular views and excellent swimming await you. The rooms are modest, but the balcony area is an excellent place to relax at the end of the day. You will hear dogs barking here and there, but that is not in Charlie's control as they are not his dogs. My wife and I ended our honeymoon at the beach in Negril and found ourselves wishing we were back on the cliffs and HSH. Very friendly staff.

Please use extreme caution when out walking the road. If there would be one area of improvement, it would be the restaurant menu to be updated, more specifically its prices. There should not be any surprises (double the price listed) when it comes time to pay for a meal.

However despite this one minor letdown we would and likely will stay again.

My husband and I had booked a 2 week stay at Home Sweet Home. I could write a novel about all the things that were wrong during our abbreviated stay. (We lasted 3 days before we checked out.) Now, the whole staff at HSH is fabulous. And Charlie, the owner, is a warm, friendly person and under different circumstances, we would have liked the opportunity to get to know him better. But there are serious problems at HSH that need to be addressed. The rooms we stayed in need lots of renovations - bathrooms are horribly outdated (except for the new toilets which were installed incorrectly and caused sewer gas to waft out of the offending toilets and into rooms and the general atmosphere - hope that's fixed, Charlie.). The second room we were given had odds and ends of different broken tiles patching the original shower stall. I had to clean the shelves in the bathroom before I would put any of our stuff on them and the paper towels came away black. Things like the doors and light fixture had thick dust and grime on them. The safe and fridge at our disposal were rusty and in poor repair and the furniture was from the dark ages. The rooms may have been given a lick and a promise, but I'd wager that they hadn't been given a really good cleaning in a decade. Some rooms had had some "repairs" made to the walls and they had been patched and then the spots painted over with paint that didn't match the rest of the wall. There were dirty screens on some of the windows - not all - and none of the louvres worked properly. The ancient window air conditioner had controls that didn't work, and needed to be plugged in and unplugged to turn it on and off. We weren't expecting the Ritz but after looking at the website, we were expecting a decent maybe 2 1/2 or 3 star place to stay. Instead, we felt like we had checked into a bargain basement cabin at a camp The grounds were unkempt to say the least (and yes, we know that storms do damage, but other places on the cliffs are nicely landscaped. Did the storms hit and damage the landscaping at HSH only?) We couldn't find a clean lounger that was undamaged to sit in on the lawn or around the pool.
On the plus side, the pool was clean and felt good, the bed was comfy and the sheets were in need of an airing, but clean (We did request regular pillowcases instead of the old, questionable shams that were on our pillows originally and we got them.), the view is spectacular, the sitting/swimming terraces going down to the ocean are lovely and the food at the restaurant, although way overpriced for Negril, tasted good. HSH has so much potential, but a place of this nature needs continuous maintenance to keep up and it appears as though HSH has just been putting bandaids on all the problems and it has become seedy. The staff was very helpful when we told them of our concerns, but all that stuff they hurried to fix should have been done long before we checked in - it's basic stuff. So much more needs to be done to make it look like the pictures on their new website. I wonder when those pictures were taken. Perhaps HSH needs to be closed and opened one room at a time as it's updated. All in all, we were so disappointed and only hope that the management can take a look at this resort with fresh eyes and can sink some money into big time renovations to turn it into the gem it could be.

I have been coming to Negril for many years and Home Sweet Home
provides all that is necessary for a wonderful Jamaican experience.
The staff could not be better, led by Charlie ( a true "Jamerican") and Tina(love at first sight) they will do whatever it takes to give you a wonderful vacation.
Terry (the cook) best Jamican breakfast in Jamaica, besides all other dishes.

We have stayed at HSH 6 or 7 times and love the place! The friendly staff sees to it that we have everything we want or need. The rooms are modest but clean with incredible views of the sea. We are within walking distance of many good restaurants although Teri the Chef is a wonderful cook, and close to the mini market if we needed to purchase anything. We really like staying up on the cliffs and avoiding all the hassles of the beach i.e., sand, hustlers, and pesky sand flies.
We plan on returning in the fall for another relaxing stay at HSH!
