First of all, some background: This was our first time in Jamaica. I have limited travel experience, but my girlfriend has traveled all over the world, including parts of the Caribbean. I am in law school and my girlfriend is starting her career as a teacher so we didn’t have unlimited money to spend on our vacation.
Where to stay in Negril: No matter where what hotel you stay at, stay on the cliffs. When we were planning our vacation I looked into nearly every hotel in Negril. We went back and forth about where to stay, but we decided on the cliffs and we were beyond content with our decision. We visited the beach on most days and loved it; however, we also liked being able o return to the peace and quiet of Home Sweet Home. The beach is wonderful—one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. There are plenty of bars to stop for a red stripe and enjoy the view of the azure water from the comfort of a lounge chair. It is, however, fairly crowed and lined with hotels and resorts. In other words, the beach is busy. The locals are keen on attempting to sell you everything from crafts to jet ski rides. Almost all are friendly, but the repeated solicitations grow old. Additionally, the beach can be loud and we heard it can get louder at night depending on where you are on the beach. We enjoyed our visits to the beach, but by the mid afternoon we were ready to return to Home Sweet Home.
Experience at HSH: We loved it. HSH is a quiet hotel where you can relax and feel, as the name suggests, at home. The location on the cliffs is wonderful. We jumped in the water and went snorkeling almost every morning. The sunsets are also breathtaking. Every night we would sit on our balcony with a glass of rum and watch the sunset—life just can’t get much better. Most the booze cruises form the resorts on the beach would sail to right in front of HSH to watch the sunset. The staff was also great. Charlie was more than accommodating and friendly. We actually have plans to grab a drink when he visits Seattle. Terry the chef, beyond being an excellent cook, is extremely friendly. When I said that I had an interest in cooking, she invited me back to the kitchen to teach me the basics of Jamaican cuisine. The rooms, while not fancy, were extremely comfortable.
Why the negative reviews: If you are as obsessive as I am about finding the perfect place to stay, any negative reviews probably give you pause. After reading these reviews, I think they are mostly the result of varying expectations. HSH is not a resort where the staff dotes on you or where rooms look like they are from a five star resort. It is a comfortable, safe (we never had any concerns) and relaxing place in a wonderful location. Come here if you don’t mind some chipped paint and painted over light switches.
Overall: Amazing vacation and a great place to say.
