“One of the best vacations ever!”
Reviewed January 12, 2009

My wife & I have just returned from Couples Negril. We where there from 1/3 to 1/10/09. We are in our late 30’s travel to the Caribbean & Mexico at least twice a year & have stayed @ many higher end all-inclusive resorts. This is our 2nd time to Jamaica. The first time we stayed @ the Grand Bahia Principe in Runaway Bay, which was maybe mediocre at best. Couples Negril was one of the best resorts that we have ever been to & blew away the Grand Bahia in every aspect. After staying @ Couples, I feel that the Grand Bahia should be condemned. Here is the breakdown of our trip:

Travel:
We flew in on Air Jamaica direct from Baltimore with no problems at all. Great airline! After arriving in the Montego Bay airport & going through baggage claim & customs, we went to the Couples lounge for a Redstripe & water. After 10 minutes in the lounge we where driven directly to the resort on an air conditioned bus, which took about 1 hour & 30 minutes.

Check in:
Very smooth. We where given a cold towel & glass of champagne upon arrival to the resort. Our room was ready right away & out luggage was taken to our room by a bellman.

Room:
No complaints at all. Had a standard garden room located on the 3rd floor of building 4. The room was a little bit out-dated; however, it did not bother us at all. The room was very clean, had a good air conditioner, a 42 inch flat screen TV with all of the main channels, a comfortable king sized bed, a nice balcony overlooking the beautiful grounds & a fully stocked mini bar with beer, water, soda, & hard liquor! You can order whatever you want to stock your bar with! The bathroom was standard & worked for us. They also offer a room service continental breakfast every morning if you want it & also provide a nightly turn down service every night.

Grounds:
Beautiful grounds & very well kept. Many palm trees & tropical foliage.

Food & drink:
The food was excellent! They serve the best food that I have had at an all-inclusive resort by a landslide. The breakfast buffet was excellent & had everything you could imagine. We had the room service continental breakfast twice, which was also very good. The beach grill was great for lunch. Good jerk chicken & nachos! We ate at all of the restaurants for dinner twice: Lychee, Otahite, & Halacona, all of which where excellent. They never ran out of anything & you never had to wait for anything. Friday night is lobster night & they serve lobster at all of the restaurants. The drinks where made as strong as you want with top shelf liquor & served with a smile. There are no plastic 8 ounce Dixie cups at this resort! The Casavasa bar has live reggae every night & even had a steel drum band play one night, which was awesome! The Halacona bar was my favorite, located right on the beach overlooking the ocean.

Weather:
Perfect. Sunny & 85 degrees every day.

Service:
Bar none, the best service that I have ever had at any resort in the US or in the Caribbean! The staff is very polite, professional, & extremely nice! Very high praise to all, especially Omar, Tonisha, Shrek, Kevin, Conroy, Damion, & Franklin. We have made a lot of new friends with the staff here that we hope to see again soon.

Beach:
Awesome white sand beach with crystal clear turquoise water. The water is like glass, there are no waves & it is always just the right temperature. There are always seats available at any time of the day. The red flag drink service is incredible. They even have a self serve liquor bar right on the beach if you want to make your own drink! You can take a walk to the end of the beach all the way down to the Riu Negril resort. It’s a nice walk which provides many interesting sights.

Excursions:
Did both the reef snorkeling trip & sunset catamaran booze cruise through the resort = free. Both where a lot of fun & I highly recommend them both. I also did the parasailing which was about $60 & worth every penny.

One thing that I had forgot to mention is that there are no kids allowed on the resort, which makes it very peaceful & romantic. I wish that I was still there. This is one of the best vacations that my wife & I have ever had. We will definitely be coming back to this resort next year & every year. I don’t see how anyone could say anything bad about this resort. You will definitely have a good time here.

My wife and I booked a AirJamaica vacation from Chicago for $1950 per person all taxes fees included. Direct non-stop. We left Chicago O'Hare on December 21 and came back December 28.

We arrived at Montego Bay Airport and went to the Couples Lounge at the airport for a couple of free drinks while we waited about 15 minutes for everyone to get on the buses for the 1 1/2 hour bus ride to Couples Negril.

The resort is wonderful - the rooms are very good although nothing to write home about.

The beach is fantastic - clear water, palm trees, shallow water, warm water, lounge chairs are abundant, hammocks here and there, and great sand. This is bloody bay, not seven mile - a better beach!

The staff is second to none - always helpful - always happy and with a great attitude! No tipping.

Red flag service - while we always generally got our own drinks we did sometimes use the red flag service and it was fast and wonderful - you simply put your flag up and they come and take your order - no tipping, no bs.

Food was wonderful at all the reastaurants - always a pleasure and never any tipping.

Drinks....... Always tasted great....but never did I feel drunk...and I drank alot - I think this is what always happens at all inclusive resorts - I swear they have special liquor where you don't get drunk (and insight is appreciated).

Overall - Highly recommend - also, highly recommend to go over Christmas, leave your family and friends behind and go - you will then be hooked to go every Christmas.

Our first time to the Caribbean but we are already planning to come back. We decided on Couples Negril after reading TripAdvisor reports to resorts in Jamaica, Antigua and Barbados - in fact we picked the hotel rather than the island and were not disappointed. Thoroughly loved the island and the people - from stepping off the plane to going home we met some really lovely people.Food was good and well presented - there was always a good choice at the buffet and something for everybody. The only other place that we ate at was the Heliconia because it was so nice and the staff were friendly - it had a lovely atmosphere in the evenings. In fact the staff at the whole resort were wonderful and all friendly from the grounds staff to the management. The grounds and beach were beautifully kept. Was surprised after reading some reports that the rooms were as nice as they were - large and spacious - they had everything that you needed and the housekeeeping service was very good. There is so much to do at Couples if you want to take advantage of the activities but if you want to be absolutely lazy the beach is lovely. A really good holiday !!

Couples Negril 12/3/08 to 12/11/08

This was our 19th trip to an all inclusive in Jamaica, 3rd to a Couples resort (COR 91, CSA 07 and now CN 08). Not a really bad trip, but definitely not as good as CSA last December. Not sure if CN is just not as good as CSA or if possibly the entire chain has changed in the past year due to economic conditions. Couples is renovating CTI (formerly COR), so maybe they have made cutbacks to pay for the renovations? Well, here are the pros and cons of CN in our opinion:

Pros
- They had papaya at breakfast daily and also at the bars.
- Floats were on all chairs (pool and beach), so no games with saving floats.
- Free classes to make hats, jewelry, trivets. Fun to make things yourself.
- Bars opened promptly and were always stocked.
- Best food of the week:
o Asian salad lunch at Cassava Terrace
o Appetizer platter dinner at Lychee
o Tenderloin dinner at Othaheite
o Cheese ravioli and chicken cacciatore dinner at Heliconia
o Lobster Friday night dinner at Heliconia

Cons
- Saw many places where the property needed some TLC. It just looked like many minor things were in need of repair and as a result the property looked tired. For example, sound system broke by main pool our second day and was still not working when we left on day ten.
- Our TA had requested a room on the 2nd floor for us, but we were given one on the 3rd floor. When we saw this we asked to change rooms and were told the only other room we could get was on the 1st floor; not what we wanted, but better then 3rd for us. We were told we would have to wait for the room to be made up because another couple had the room and was moving to another. Guess that should have alerted us. The 1st night in the room the AC unit sounded stressed all night, so neither of us slept very well. About 6am we heard some water dripping and then a downpour of water and it was the AC! We grabbed towels to try and contain the water and called to request maintenance. They did not show up by 9am so went to front desk to report again and then maintenance came and were able to fix it that afternoon, but not a great start to our trip.
- Sheets are not fitted and they are not large enough to cover the mattress, so your feet end up touching the bare mattress - yuck!
- No elevators and bellmen did not like carrying suitcases up and down the stairs. We saw our luggage being dragged/bounced down the steps.
- The 1st day/night your mini bar is only stocked with sodas. After that you get a preprinted order sheet with limited choices and only X amount per day. Ex: 1 Diet Pepsi a day per the sheet. We also noticed that the liquor was only bar brands and they did not offer any wine. At CSA 12/08 they had call brands and wine in the rooms.
- No true beach bar. The one they call a beach bar you have to walk up steps and thru a dining area to get to. They do have beach service, but we heard it was slow. The pool bar does get busy because it's easier to get to from the beach.
- Not many group activities. The entertainment staff is barely visible during the day. They do have Bocce ball and horseshoes on the beach, but they never have teams to play these.
- Management drinking on the job. One day Carlos (team leader of the bars we were told) went in the pool bar and emptied a bottle of water and then filled the bottle with Sambauca! Everyone around the bar saw this and the bartender just said Carlos was having a bad day with his boss. We've seen many employees at resorts drink with the guests, but this was the only time we've seen an employee do anything like this.
- Sports/Games equipment
o Played black out bingo casino night and some numbers never got called and they ran out of balls to call, so either they were missing some or some were called wrong.
o Ring toss - Each person got 3 throws, but they only had 2 rings so game took a lot longer to play.
o Bocce ball they were missing the target ball.
o 1st few days the only ball for pool volleyball was an old beach volleyball with no vinyl left on it and really not usable, so nobody played. Day 3 we wanted to play so stopped the only person we saw that was a manger and asked for a ball. He was in the food and beverage department actually, but he did his best to find one for us. Eventually they did come up with a ball, but it was a beach volleyball and very heavy and hard to play with.
- Towards the end of our trip we found out that the message light on our room phone was not working. We only found out this because a manager at the repeaters dinner told us he'd called us a few times and he was wondering why we did not return his call. Later that night we checked the messages on our phone and we actually had 4 messages. Thankfully none of them were urgent/emergency calls from our family! We reported that this was broken, but it never did get fixed while we were still there (2 days).
- They have 3 gift shops but they are small and usually had boxes on the floor, so very hard to shop. We were shopping to spend our resort credit from the Romance Rewards program. The day we were checking out the front desk told us we still had a small credit and that we should go buy a sweet. We went to the newsstand shop to do that and were told we could not because they have a minimum of $3.00 to use a room charge. Rules are OK, but all of the employees should know them and the guests should also be advised of the rules. If all of the shops had a few smaller items it would be much easier to use up your entire credit.
- Worst food of the week
o Lobster at the repeaters dinner was mushy and turf was small pieces of chicken
o Steak at Heliconia was too tough to eat
o No mild fish that we saw on any menu
o Almost all the food was prepared with way too much salt.

We also talked to a group of repeaters that had been going to Couples Negril for 5 years and they were disappointed this trip and said they will not return to Couples Negril. If you've never been to an all inclusive before you'd probably be happy at Couples Negril, but if like us you have been to many we would not recommend staying at Couples Negril.

This was our first trip to Couples, Negril and it will not be our last. We had some friends that were going to try the resort along with one other couple and they asked us to join them for a long overdue get together. In the past, we have spent our vacation time in Los Cabos, Mexico and really didn't want to go to Jamaica. We like Los Cabos and thought it would be better if we met there instead of going all the way to the other side of "close tourism". Bending to pressure from our friends, we figured we would go to Jamaica this year and then switch back to Los Cabos.

Like we always do, we spent a lot of our free time on the internet looking at the new area and trying to see if we could find anything to keep our interest while we were there. Even with all the great reviews on the resort, we never expected to fall totally in love with the area and the people. In fact, this was such a wonderful experience that we are already planning our next trip!

Since we spent many months going over some of the reviews, we have attached some tips we wanted to mention to other travelers.

We both wore jeans traveling on the plane and to the resort and we weren't too hot in them. The wife half is usually the one who gets too hot but, this was not the case this time. Besides, jeans are typically safer if something were to happen or if you had an unexpected stay outside with the bugs.

Once we landed in Negril and got off the plane, our whole process took a little longer than others had posted. We think it was due to our arrival happening at the same time everyone else was getting in. The good thing was that there is a bathroom to use while you so standing in line doesn't seem to take very long.

Please be aware that things are really different when you get up to the couples lounge. There will be people there that are associated with the shuttle service to the resort, that will take your luggage from you. This caught us off guard because they didn't really make it clear that they were part of Couples. We've seen people in other countries be swept away by people not with their resort and they spend several days trying to get back to where they originally were headed. This was not the case at Jamaica but they could help themselves if they would make it more clear that they are tied to the resort. Once we checked in at the desk inside the lounge, our suitcases were tagged in a group to go into the shuttle. We had to wait for other people to come off the plane to take the shuttle to the resort so it took about 30 minutes until we finally were on our way. Ladies, there are two bathrooms to use in the lounge while you are waiting to get onto the shuttles so the wait doesn't seem long.

Our ride to the resort was comfortable but the delays pushed us into night-time so we couldn't see the beautiful countryside. Everyone is quite laid back and when a giant pothole opened up and blew out our back tire, the driver quickly called another van and we were fast on our way. We don't believe the new van was even with the same company but they did what they could to make sure we got to the resort. Nice guys, dealing a frustrating situation. We should all act so nice when faced with a simialr problem. Like we said, after only a few minutes, another shuttle was traveling in the opposite direction turned around and offered to load us up on their van and take us to the resort. As others have stated, the resort greeted us with wet towels and champagne to drink. This process went by fast and we were then taken to our room. We got a beach front room in building 6 on the second floor and the room was almost exactly as shown on the web site. We were very happy with the view ( you are very close to the beach) and we felt the room was very nice. Because it was late when we arrived, we actually didn't see anything outside until the next morning. Wow...What a beautiful place!!!

Beyond the many things to do and the terrific people at the resort, there are some practical things we would like to pass on. The resort provides you with some aloe vera gel to use if you get sunburned. This means that there is no need to pack any extra sun burn lotion in your bag. We never had a problem with a sunburn as we spent some months getting our skin conditioned by using the tanning booths before we arrived at the resort. We spent a lot of time out in the sun and we believe the preparation made all the difference.

In some of the reviews it was mentioned that the humid weather would make your hair go frizzy. The wife side has naturally curly hair in which she usually doesn't have problems with it getting frizzy. Still though, from reading the reviews, she was very concerned and packed a lot of anti frizz products. They weren't needed. In fact, we found out that by just using the local shampoo and conditioner that our hair was just fine. We also just let it air dry too. So, ladies you might want to pack some anti frizz products but unless your hair normally frizzes don't load your suitcase up with all the extra weight. It will make it easier to get through the security areas at the airport too.

Like we said, there was a ton of stuff to do at the resort. One thing not at the resort was a zip-line tour. We found out about this tour through the motel desk and they helped with setting everything up. The zip-lines are in the rain forest up by Montego Bay so plan on abount an hour and a half drive each way.

First, let's be clear that the wife half was quite the coward of the group and this tour really stretched her comfort zone. However, after a long night of talking, all you can eat food & drinks, and a moonlit walk on the beach, she did end up doing the tour and would think about doing it again. The jamacian tour guides for the zip-line were excellent. The wife-side cried and screamed on almost every zip line but the guides were very supportive and encouraging to her. By the way, it does really help to scream since it helps release the fear.

For the guys out there, it was refreshing to see a company so completely concerned with your safety. Before each run they checked the complete harness and made sure you progressed about the many acres in a safe, enjoyable manner. Americans could learn a lot about customer service and safety from these folks. So, if you want to try something new in your life, please look into doing the zip-line tour. You sign up for it in the lobby at the resort and the whole thing costs around $200 for a couple. It takes you away for about 6 hours but the van driver gives you a constant view on the history for the area as you drive by land marks and the zip-line people also add to the historical tour. The ride to the zip-line is about an hour and a half so ladies don't drink too much before you get on the shuttle. There are bathrooms to use when you get there and you should take some extra money to buy the dvd's of the pictures they take of you while you are going on the zip lines. It is cool to look back at those pictures and to realize you actually had the nerve to do the tour.

We can't even begin to say enough about our positive experience while at the resort. Even with some windy weather taking away some of the water sports, there was plenty of other things to do and, unlike other resorts, if you wanted to just relax then that was there for the taking too. We have found that other resorts want to always keep you busy and for some reason they feel the need to keep you on schedule. That was not the case here. There were things to do, but only if you wanted to do them. This resort is a great place to relax, whether it is in a Hobi-cat or a hammock.

This was the most relaxing vacation we have ever had and we would highly recommend the resort to other people. We spent a lot of time laying out of the beach, eating & drinking, socializing with old and new friends and yes, even kicking back in their hammock built for two people. There is nothing like a nap together under the shade provided by palm trees as the wind gently rocks you to sleep. One final thing. It was great going to a resort that didn't have kids and only couples. We think this is what made a big difference in being able to kick back and relax. Previous resorts that we have been to have allowed little kids and it seems that the parents think the resort is nothing more than a baby-sitting establishment for them to drop their kids off while they go off and drink. That is certainly not the case at Couples. Everyone is there for a good time, they are respectful to each other, and the staff is absolutely amazing. What a great place!

We chose CN as we have been there before and it has always been excellent. Its only and hour and a half flight for us so Jamaica is the first place we choose for a relaxing vacation., plus we love the beach and the people.
Service was excellent as usual and food was pretty good, you cant go wrong with fresh seafood, just delicious.
One problem though, why oh why do smokers sit at the pool bar and feel its OK to blow smoke at everyone around and for all their ciggie buts and ash to be blown into the pool? Then there are the the others who eat in the pool, yes big plates of food and then they wsh their hands in the lovely pool.
Other than the idiots who did that, CN is a great place to go.

My husband and I stayed at CN from 1/1-1/6. We arrived non-stop from Philadelphia, customs was a breeze (5 minutes or so) and finding the couples lounge was simple. We were greeted with smiles and cold red strip and water. The drive to CN lasted about 75 minutes.
When we arrived our room was ready and we were taken to our oceanview room. Now...I am very fortunate to have read the reviews on this website and had prepared myself for mediocre and aged room. I believe the reviews on this website were extremely accurate, and was happy to have set my expectations low. That being said, it was cleaned by staff twice a day, towel atr with flowers and turndown service nightly, and the view (although you could only spot specs of the ocean) met my expectations.
The food at the resort for breakfast was average, lunch was much better. My husband and I loved the jerk chicken at the grill, and at the lunch buffet there were always more than adequate vegetarian options (olives, feta cheese, cold salads, grilled veggies)...all were good. Dinner is where the food stood out for my husband and I, the fine dining restaurant was exceptional. The service was great (Adrian and Stefan were so attentive) and the food was on par with fine dining in philadelphia. I was extremely impressed. Also to note, at this restaurant their house red wine was different and better than the rest of the restaurants. Lynche was great as well. The food was mostly Thai, and the sushi was so fresh. The service that we received there (Pedro was our waiter) was the best we have received at any resort or restaurant for that matter. Also to note...the rose bowl and playoffs were televisized down there (all the rooms have all the major channel and cable) and we guzzled down red stripes and nachos (that we made from their nacho bar...so good).
The entertainment was great!! I can't believe there is not more acknowledged in prior reviews in this reguard. Couples brings in some really impressive bands/singers...EVERY day. The beach bonfire with the muscian was one of our favorites...so romantic.
My favorite part of CN was the beach. Oh my how beautiful and crystal clear the waters were and how soft the sand felt as it touched your feet. It was the most beautiful beach I have been to (and I have been the too many to list here). I also went scuba diving and saw many fish on the reef, an octopus, and stingrays close to the shore. The scuba staff is awesome (Craig was so patient). Kayaking was fun as well. Seriouslly though, the beach is so beautiful (I can't wait to revisit it).
