“Overall, nice stay, but a few disappointments”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

This was our first stay, and probably our last. We stayed here for the first half of our honeymoon and it felt a little more like a party scene sometimes. Our first day there, we heard a drunk girl yelling about her day at the beach to some obviously sober friends.

The staff was overall nice, but often mumbled and it was hard to decipher what they were saying. Not too many smiles, either. Understandable, because most of the staff probably deals with fat drunk Americans all day.

Three things NOT to do:
1.) Do not buy their post cards & stamps at their gift shop. We spent $25 on post cards & stamps to send to our family. I gave them to the guy at the concierge, which is who I was told to give them to, on 4/11/13 and today is 4/26/13 and no one has received their post cards. Don't waste your money.
2.) Do not forget sunscreen & bug spray. We forgot bug spray, and they charge $15 for a can that would be $4 in the US. We got eaten alive until we broke down & bought it.
3.) Do not go to Mayfield Falls. For 2 people, it was $170 to take an hour & a half bus ride to the middle of nowhere, hike up the creek & get completely soaking wet & freezing cold for 2 hours, PAY an additional $25 for lunch, and ride an hour & a half bus ride back. We thought we were going to hike to see some beautiful waterfalls, but it was traipsing through the creek & climbing over rapids-- no waterfalls like I envisioned. Since we couldn't take anything that we didn't want to get wet, we had to pay $1 for their "locker." Then they had a guy follow us to take pictures this his own camera & he wanted $40 for the pictures if we wanted to remember the trip.

Things to do:
1.) Go to Feathers. You have to make reservations at least a day ahead, but the food & service was the best we had during our stay. And there's a dress code.
2.) Go on the orientation. It was a little too long, but it was the best & quickest way to learn what the resort has to offer & where everything was located.
3.) Try all the drinks & food. We loved the veggie stand & some of the non-alcoholic drinks. We would order the Ocean 11 with a shot of rum mixed in. Stay away from the buffet salad though... A friend warned us to stay away from it & we didn't listen & got the runs the next day. Nothing too bad, but a little uncomfortable for our honeymoon ;-)

For the last half of our honeymoon, we stayed down the road at Tensing Pen, which was smaller & sexier & more relaxing in my opinion. Not all-inclusive, but that helped us not to overeat.

Room Tip: We had the Beachfront Veranda on the third floor. Great view and high enough that we had enough priv...

Thanks for your feedback, and let me get started by addressing the things you said not to do. Firstly the postal service from Jamaica to points overseas has always taken an average of 2 to 3 weeks, we don't know why but just accept it as is. The cost for some items in our gift shop that are imported items actually run on average of what many resorts would charge in Florida for similar items except that we have an added cost because those items are imported.
The 'party scene' as you described it is not indicative of our atmosphere or culture but this usually happens when we have more wedding groups on property and because they are all friends from home they are a little louder than our regular clientel of couples guests. Since we are going into the summer months where there are more weddings there can be a slight shift in demographics but at best it is still just a small percentage of our overall guests. Remember however that our core traveller and our loyal repeaters are couples like yourselves who enjoy our resort while allowing others to do the same. We would love for you to come back again probably trying a different time of the year.

We booked this as my first Jamaican trip and it was amazing. The hotel itself was beautiful and the staff were very accommodating. Most were extremely friendly. We had a few things that needed addressed in our room (our lock safe was not working properly and our sink would not drain). One phone call and both were replaced or fixed within a couple hours. The biggest downfall was the loss of my husbands luggage on our flight over. The hotel tried to accommodate us by giving him free laundry services and a "lost luggage" package that included a bag of tshirts and toiletries. They also helped track down our bag and followed up with the airline every few hours until it was found. The ocean and beaches were gorgeous. The entire complex was very well laid out and despite being "totally booked" while we there, it certainly didn't feel like it. Initially, I thought the pool was somewhat small but soon discovered that no one ever used it so it was quite perfect really. The food was quite good and the live music was the best I've seen in any of our Caribbean vacations. Water sports were awesome.

The beach chair and hut availability is definitely limited and if you don't get up early and stake a place, you will more than likely be sitting in the sun. No biggie if that's what you like.

We booked an atrium suite and found it to be so peaceful. Many of our afternoons were spent on our balcony in the hammock, listening to the waves or music that was playing. Keep in mind that some of the rooms (our suite) did not have A/C but we found we were very comfortable with the ceiling fan at night. Our room was open air and so, if you are early to hit the sack, you will be sent to sleep with music and the sounds of nocturnal animals. I found it quite soothing but I can see how some wouldn't. On the same hand, you may be woken up early by staff preparing for the day. Ear plugs are definitely recommended. Despite what some would construe as annoying, we loved our room and the resort. Will definitely go back to a couples resort!!

This was our 5th trip to csa and our vacation was excellent as usual! We booked a garden veranda suite and having stayed in one before, we knew what to expect. Large veranda amidst lush tropical foliage. Clean , comfortable room with stocked minibar, nice big king size bed, large shower and updated fixtures. Loved the bathrobes provided. Nice plush bath towels and bed linens.
Housekeeping was spot on as was the continental breakfast room service every morning. I was a little nervous about service from the things I've read on this forum but probably had the best service of all our trips to couples, Sans Soucie included. We only had one lunch service at Seagrapes that was disappointing, thats it! My favorites were the snapper sandwiches and sweet potato chips and dip , lionfish and shrimp at Feathers, the pad thai at Lemongrass, the breakfast pizza and fruit smoothies at Patios and jerk chicken and patties at Cabana grill.
As far as the liquor, it's plentiful and the drinks are strong. No skimping there.
What can I say about the beach except it's the bedt beach on Jamaica. Watersports I tried were the kayaks and standup paddleboards, very fun. Catamaran cruise thats included is always a highlight of our trip.
We booked early and received 300 dollars in resort credits and another 150 for being repeaters. Very nice and managed to spend every nickle in the gift shops and other things.
Swept Away is our favorite place to vacation because of the value, great food, activities and gorgeous property and beach. We can't wait to return.

We have been going to Jamaica for over 30 years, & stayed at Swept Away for the past 20. Our visit was from April 16 to the 23rd, & we still love the hotel, the people & the island. It has the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean, & the most laid back & relaxing atmosphere. We had a first floor beachfront suite & it was great. Housekeeping did a great job of cleaning the room & supplying us with towels, etc., & unlike some hotels, they never interrupted our stay. Our "please clean the room" sign, always got prompt attention. Room service was also on time for breakfast.
We have always found the staff at Swept Away to be very friendly & helpful with any questions or problems.
The food is very good compared to other resorts in Jamaica. We find that we like the Plams the best, because of the variety.
The only disappointment was the cancellation of the beach party, due to rain, we were really looking forward to it, but the weather can't be helped. The beach had plenty of chairs so there was never a problem getting one.
We want to give a special thank you to Shelly in guest relations. My husband has a disability, & she helped to provide accommodations that suited his situation.
Swept Away is by far the best all inclusive resort on the island & the Caribbean, & we highly recommend it.

This was our first time at a Couples resort. We found the Sports Center to be outstanding in the variety and quality of everything they offered. The water sports and the staff of the beach were really good and worked to take care of the guests. No complaints. Our room was terrible. Although the view of the ocean was good, it was loud, dark and old. Worst of all, it was also infested with cock roaches. Upon complaining to the manager, the only thing he could do was put us in a smaller room in the same building with a view of the roof of the adjoining, off-property building. The food was all right, but some of the wait staff were less than polite. Our overall impression is that Couples Swept Away, which was built in three phases, needs Phase 1 and 2 of the property renovated. It's looking its age. Most of the problems look to us to be the result of poor management. Of the 23 vacations to the Caribbean we have taken, we would rate Couples Swept Away in the bottom five.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the newer section away from the road.

I want to thank you for your candid comments and your observations and assure you that we look at all feedback with a desire to improve in all areas. The most common type of cockroach here in Jamaica is one that is commonly called a palmetto bug in Florida and the southern United States, it flies (usually at nights) and can easily enter any room through an open patio door. Our property like many other resorts has a regular pest control service contract and they do a good job considering we are in the tropics where there are so many more types of bugs, ants, spiders etc. You write that you stayed in March and for that month our occupancy was at 97% which would make it impossible to offer an upgrade so you would have been offered another room in the catagory that you had booked. Finally we have some room renovation slated to start about sometime in July and run through October. Thanks again for your feedback.

We just returned from a wonderful week at this resort. We got a fabulous deal with Air Canada vacations so that really helped!
Some background - we have visited several tropical destinations - including Costa Rica (Marriott), Bahamas (The Cove Atlantis), Mexico (Barcelo Palace), Jamaica (Sandals, Couples Tower Isle), Florida (Marriott) - so I will provide a few comparisons. I will try not to repeat too much what others have already stated.
What we LOVED about this resort -
1. Sports facility - we visited this resort specifically for the tennis and it exceeded our expectations - 10 beautiful courts in a very tropical setting with many trees to provide shade (many other resorts we drove by like Sandals had courts out in the open blazing sun) - - private lessons with great tennis pros - thanks to Brenton and David - and great tennis clinics every morning tailored to different tennis levels with a different visiting pro every week - also excellent - Besides tennis there was a nice (but not excellent gym) with the option of a personal trainer - that's a nice touch - a beautiful lap pool and a great smoothie bar for when you are done your workout. This was an incredible value when you think that private tennis lessons alone are worth at least $60 per lesson and I had one every day and clinics are generally $35/clinic. That's almost $100/day in tennis alone. This is by far the best facility we have ever experienced at a resort.
2. The food - this was also very important to us and I spent alot of time selecting a resort that had good food reviews - again we were not disappointed in this. We really liked that there were NON buffet options for every meal - other resorts we have been to did not have this option - this really made this resort stand out. The quality of the food was excellent at every meal - perhaps not the vast variety that we have seen at other resorts like the Barcelo- but we would rather have less variety with better quality - when we did eat at the buffet - the selections were always very tasty and very fresh tasting - great salad bar for lunch. I have a very sensitive stomach and I had NO trouble with any of the food during the entire week. The food at Feather's was particularly outstanding - not to be missed - we ate there twice and wished we could have sampled everything on the menu - speaking of menus - they change on Thursdays - this is a nice feature - because you can eat at restaurants several times and never get tired of the food! The wine was passable at best - but the wine at the Barcelo Mexico was MUCH worse so we were satisfied! This was definitely the best all-inclusive food we have had. The cost of the food when we stayed at the Cove Atlantis was over the top expensive but the quality was very much the same ($35pp for the buffet breakfast plus tax and tip- granted the selection was vast and it was lovely, but way more than any one person needed) - - so we felt that the value/quality of this food was A+.
What we LIKED about this resort.
1. Definitely a beautiful beach - but we the beaches we have seen in the Bahamas and Mexico (Mayan) were equally as nice. We love to walk the beach, but prefer a more "secluded" atmosphere when we walk - and this is not like that - very populated beach as far as you walk. Some of the warmest water that I have been in in the tropics and I am VERY fussy about warm water - it was lovely.
2. The room - definitely not the fanciest room we have been in (The Cove Atlantis wins that award), but we don't care about fancy so we were very happy with the room - clean and well appointed - just not fancy. The bed was comfortable but again, not the most comfortable hotel bed we have slept in (Marriott wins for that). We had a look at a room in a smaller very nice "boutique" resort down the beach - room was comparable - but the resort had nothing else to offer but a VERY small area of beach and a small very basic restaurant - the rooms there were $250/night - no meals no nice grounds, no sports facility, no pool, no nothing - so that may give you an idea as to the value of the room at couples - the room alone should be worth at least $300 or more per night, plus meals, plus tennis, plus drinks, plus all the water sports - do the math - it's good value.
3. The grounds - loved all the palm trees and flowers - yes there were many beautiful flowers - not manicured flower gardens, but beautiful tropical flowers growing naturally - we loved strolling along the pathways and seeing so many varieties of palm trees. Many newer more contemporary resorts have a much more "spartan" approach to landscaping and we prefer the more mature tropical foliage that this resort had to offer.
What we did not love about the resort (only if I am being very picky - I don't want to sound like I am really complaining)
1. We booked a garden room (all that was left with the deal) - we were prepared for noise - but I did not think it would be quite as noisy as it was. I did get used to it so it didn't interfere with my sleep - however it just seemed to take away from that "tropical feeling" that we have had at other resorts (except at Atlantis which is like the Disney resort of the Bahamas)- You could hear the traffic all the time when you were walking in many parts of the resort and sitting on your balcony - I mean the highway is REALLY close to the resort particularly at the end of the resort where Feather's is - the lobby area there is very open to the road -- and it is a very busy highway - we do prefer to be a bit more isolated and quiet - but keep in mind that all resorts in this area are along this same highway and have the same problem - it's not just a Couples problem - Note that the rooms by the water do not hear any noise at all (but of course are much more expensive) - even some of the atrium rooms could potentially be a bit noisy.
2. Vendors on the beach - again, this just took a bit away from the tropical experience - no other resort we have been to had this issue - it just got to be a bit much after 7 days - not really the vendors, but the singers - again - just a bit annoying after hearing the same song several times a day every day while trying to read or take a nap. There is no way to avoid this if you sit on the beach.
Overall we LOVED our stay here - and would not hesitate to return here - we would not stay anywhere else in Negril that is for sure.

Room Tip: Beachfront rooms will be the quietest.
