The resort was beautiful, as I entered the lobby I was greeted by the lovely friendly Jamaican staff . The room was immaculate, the beach was warm and beautiful. The food and alcohol was good enough, the entertainment was great.. looking forward to going back very soon. Best romantic getaway ever...

Went here for a family wedding, Jamaica is paradise to be simple.

Staff were brilliant, Dunns River is brilliant - Do the partyboat, Must swim with the dolphins in Jamaica, it is amazing and beautiful. Go and see Adrian on the beach bar - he is great :)

Food was nice, a few weird combinations but always something you could eat, entertainment was the thing that let it down for me. It was OK and there was a nightclub you could go to once the entertainment had finished but it was all half hearted performances - except the steel band (brilliant!!)

The staff work so hard, all day and night and are so friendly. Loved the hotel and the place. Felt like we needed to stay on the resort to be "safe" not the case at all. We would definatley return but go off the complex more.

Room Tip: Dont need to upgrade to a superior 99% of rooms have a sea view due to layout

Just returned from our stay Jan. 13 -19. We found the Riu a wonderful place overall. We stayed in the deluxe wing with a jr. suite and ocean view which was fab! and our rooms were perfect! The staff were amazingly all friendly and helpful except for the front desk, who were quite rude. Check in was a breeze so we were all able to get some beach time in after a long day of travel. We hung out mostly at the Reggae bar/pool and enjoyed great drinks and good times! The bartenders were fun, friendly and delightful. It was awesome the pool was adult only since our kids are 20 and 22, so we didn't have the noise and ruckus. The beach was beautiful and clean and the water a gorgeous turquoise blue and warm. We took advantage of the kayaks and snorkeling and were able to glimpse some incredible fish. Excursions were overpriced, but what can you do? The food was good and we tried 3 of the restaurants that required reservations. The biggest negative of the Riu was the lack of decent entertainment. It was beyond poor and unfortunately the only game in town. You either watched what was on the stage (which was appalling) or you played cards. There needs to be more choices for things to do at night. We didn't have great weather for our stay, but want to return again and hopefully there will be better entertainment.

Stayed for a couple days with friends. The food is good, the rooms nice and the pools nice. The beach is quite small and hard, compared to other beaches in the area. It's in a great location though. Also, some of the staff was very rude to me and everyone I was with, for absolutely no reason. All-in-all it was a pleasant stay though.

First, we stayed in the Deluxe wing and this review only applies to that area. We had room 1212 which is a "garden view junior suite". It was on the third level of the hotel. The room was not actually a "suite" but one large room with a terrace. Sitting on the terrace you had a nice ocean view. the room was modern and spotless. Yes over the course of 6 days we saw a couple of small bugs - no big deal. Fortunately, there were no mosquitoes around when we were there.
The beach on the Deluxe side was completely clean and towels were easily accessible at the pool. The pool was largely empty despite the hotel being full.
The ocean was wonderful. You can snorkel just beyond the swimming area rope where there is coral and see hundreds of colorful fish. If you can, bring your own mask. Snorkels and masks are available at no charge but you have to leave a $25 deposit and bring the equipment back in an hour if you use the hotel's snorkels. We also used the pedal boats and kayaks (no deposit required for these). We did note that someone wanted to take out a sailboat but was told he needed a $20 lesson before he could take one out. (No lessons required for other boats). No one ever tried to sell us anything while in the water or on the beach.
Food was a mixed bag. Breakfasts were fine with a large variety of made to order omelots and crepes. I would have pancakes and a bagel. For lunch the Jamaican food like curried goat was excellent. As is true in all reviews here the jerk chicken from the hut on the beach became a standard lunch fare. Wife felt is was the best chicken she ever tasted. I would get the chicken and bring it to one of the sit down restaurants and we would get salads and vegetables from the buffet. The dinner at the Sir Richard restaurant was excellent. It was an intimate setting and the food was a step above (I had the rasta pasta appetizer and an excellent beef tenderloin). The next night was not as good at the Mamebee steak house. I should have repeated the tenderloin but tried the red snapper which had little taste.
The staff was friendly and we had no rude encounters.
I would say 80% of people did not tip at all. My wife and I drink little alcohol so we got "virgin" drinks from the beach bar and would tip every third visit. We also tipped our waiter at the Sir John and gave our housekeeper $20 at the end of the week.
We used Jamaica Tours for transport to and from the airport. $45 pp round trip and got to hotel as quickly as a cab as we made only one stop. On the way back our driver Peter made it into a tour showing us Harry Belafonte's house and the school where Ursain Bolt went while giving us a history lesson of the isalnd.
We would go back again. Note we paid for the stay with Aadvantage points. There is a 30% discount on the points needed if you have an aa credit card so it was very economical.

Room Tip: Select a high floor on the Deluxe wing.

my boyfriend an i stayed here for one week from the 9th to 16th Jan, firstly on arriving at the hotel we asked for a possible upgrade to the deluxe wing but the hotel was full to capacity so no upgrades available. When we went into our room we were made up with it no musty smell, which previous people have said there was, the room was bright and spotless. The room was number 2329 on the third floor in the main building, over looking the pool and partial sea view. you could lay down on your bed and see the sea. We never saw any bugs in our room all week.

The food in the hotel you wanted for nothing, so much choice, we visited the asian and steak house was both nice but still prefered the buffet. The drinks and cocktails where endless so much to choose from. There was only local brands not top branded spirits. The redstripe was good, pina coladas and miami vice was lush!!!

The staff were so friendly and so polite nothing was to much trouble, Pauline our rep from thomson was so funny.

We did the dunns river excursion while we were there it was worth doing, a nice experience.
We went to the beach everyday as it was so nice, the pool area was lovely but the pool bar was crowded in the afternoons. The jerk chicken hut on the beach was open everyday an worth a visit.

Just take american dollars with you they are accepted everywhere.

The nightly entertainment was satisfactory, as far as hotel entertainment goes. The entertainments team worked very hard all day. We met some lovely people an enjoyed afew drinks chatting in the evenings everyone was so friendly.

The thing i liked about the hotel most was it was bustling and had a great vibe to it no matter what time of day. if you want to chill out all week and do afew excursions to break your trip up then this is the place for you, theres nothing around the hotel, the nearest town is ocho rios and it will take you around 15 mins and it was 35 dollars return, its only a small shopping area and afew bars and resturants, we went up there in the morning for a couple of hours. The weather was superb in the late 80s everyday. I can honestly say my partner and i had a fab holiday and was quite sad to leave

Room Tip: Room 2329 our room on the third floor main building was lovely, no complants from us
