We stayed at Riu Ocho Rios from December 16th-30th. It wasn't our first holiday at a RIU Hotel (stayed in Mexico and Spain before), but our first holiday in Jamaica. WE LOVED IT and sure will come back.
Very quick check-in, but maybe depends on our small group of people. If you have a RIU card, show it! We got an upgrade to a junior suite in the deluxe, adults-only section.
We stayed in 1129, on the first floor in the deluxe section with a nice view over the gardens and pool, in the background we also could see the sea. Room was very spacious, twin beds, extra area with couch and flat screen. Our lovely room maid gave us so many towels that I could use two fresh ones everytime I took a shower (and I did that twice a day!). Some reviewers talked about an odd smell, never smelled anything bad, except of something coming from the outside, maybe our neighbours smoking on the balcony. Balcony was very small, but ok. Fridge was stocked every two days, a bottle of fresh water every day, maybe for the people who use it for toothbrushing. But there is absolutely no need for it, never got sick of the water!
Room service perfect, don't forget to tip your room maid!
We only stayed at the pool in the deluxe section, as we prefer a quiet surrounding. Pool was cleaned every day, waiters at the pool bar very nice, made a lot of jokes with the guys from the towel hut. There are big parasols, so if it starts raining, stay right at your place, you won't get wet, it is big fun!
Very very clean, a lot of sunloungers, very shady with palmtrees. Have never seen any vendor on the beach except of the spa team that belongs to the hotel. The sea is wonderful. Water is very warm!! Warning: Don't go beyond the line without water shoes, my husband stepped into something at the coral reef. There is a lovely wedding chapel on the beach, so you can watch all the weddings while swimming, great fun:-)
I heart many complaints about the food but nothing of that is true. Yes, the food isn't very warm, but that's nothing new in southern countries. Dear german people, even if your food doesn't come out hot of the kitchen, you can eat it!!!!!! There is a large variety at the buffet St.Ann in the evening, many dishes for vegetarians, a wide choice of salads and desserts. I loved the mexican and jamaican theme nights, only complaint I have is that they only did serve bammy once...the desserts were delicious, try to taste everything! Loved the icecream as well.
Breakfast was also splendid, everything you would expect for american, british or german taste: From pancakes with mable sirup to beans and eggs to muffins....delicious!
Best restaurant is Mandalay Asian Buffet. Try the fried vegetables and spring rolls! So good!!!
We ate twice at Mandalay, twice at Sir Johns and once at the Japanese Restaurant. Sir Johns is also very good, they were so kind to serve me a special vegetarian dish. Perfect service. Didn't like the japanese restaurant - they promised me to bring me an extra plate with vegetarian sushi which never came. So I went out hungry....
Reservation for the restaurants was no problem, but I think this depends on the season...
The animation crew makes an incredible job! Every night they entertain the people with dance shows and they really can dance!!! Twice there was a beach party with amazing fire show. And there were reggae artists and a steel drum band. That was amazing! I missed a magic show, but nevertheless, can't complain about the animation team! Didn't take part in the daily animation.
Service is good and maybe a little faster if you tip. We regularly tipped the guys at the bars and our room maid, as they were doing the best jobs. I know that people survive on the tips, but I also think that they should do something for that as well!
Don't stay at the hotel all the time! There are so many places worth to see! Take a local tour guide and support the people, you will see more than with a big group. I recommend Rose Hall Great House, Jamaican Swamp Safari, Green Grotto Caves and Dolphin's Cove. If you go to Dunn's River Falls, be prepared! There are many vendors with stupid tricks, if you don't pay attention, they sell you stuff you don't want.
