“One year anniversary super deal”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

$350-$450 a night is a lil pricey for the average person, please note there is nothing average about the beach front suite. Beautiful and spacious inside and out. The food was okay however there is plenty to choose from. Not many daytime activities, with the space in the rooms we entertained ourselves. The beach was nice, found a reef about 30ft past the buoy and went snorkeling with our own equipment. Desk staff were a pleasure to work with. Would visit again, looking forward to it becoming an adult only resort.

Room Tip: If your staying a couple of days and can afford it the suite is definitely the way to go. Oceanfront...

My boyfriend and I decided to go away for our anniversary this year and thought of going to Jamaica. We asked our friends and family who’ve visited Jamaica for their input and we repeatedly heard great reviews from the Riu Resort in Ocho Rios. We looked for prices and found that the all-inclusive deals in mid-October were of great value! (We paid $1050 CA each after tax & insurance). After more research, we found out that the prices were so cheap because October is considered “Hurricane Season.” At first we were quite skeptical of travelling during this time - we were constantly monitoring the weather reports- but we ended up booking our trip anyway, figuring we would take our chances. Thank goodness we did! We had nothing but sunny skies all week long, and not a drop of rain came down!

Our date of stay: October 16th-23rd 2013

Check-in/Check-out: The drive from Montego Bay airport was about a 1.5-hour bus ride. It went by pretty smoothly. We were given the opportunity to upgrade our rooms for a price, but decided to stay in the Garden view room. Room and towel cards were provided as well as a safe key. We were also informed about the free 90minutes of wifi each day available in the main lobby. Internet plans were available if interested.

Rooms: Our garden view room was located to the right side of the resort. (the left side was for the deluxe rooms). The room had a king size bed, air conditioning, overhead fan, his & her sinks, an excellent mini bar (which they refilled with alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks every second day), a TV and a balcony. When we first checked into our room, we noticed that our lights weren’t working properly. The main power switch was faulty, turning on and off by itself. One quick call to the front desk and a maintenance man came up within the hour to fix the issue in about 3 minutes.

Grounds: The resort was always kept as clean as I can possibly imagine. The public washrooms were kept clean and smelling fresh. The pool and beach area was always tidy. The only downfall was the massive insects. I know that with any hot country, bugs are to be expected. But these insects were the size of an average person’s thumb and they flew. What was strange though was that whenever we saw these bugs, on the way to our room, they were all laying on the floor dead. In the early morning, you can hear them buzzing around outside. But by the time you were ready to leave, the insects would be dead. The cleaners at the resort would clean these up, of course, whenever they were completing their rounds. But the odd times they weren’t available, there would be about 5 of them on the floor on the way from the main lobby to our room. Thankfully, the bugs never made it to our rooms. Other than that, the resort was as clean as can be.

Staff: Everyone was super friendly, always greeting you with a smile. We learned that in Jamaica, there are no problems- just situations. And those situations would always be resolved. Only complaint was that the front desk at times would not answer when phoned.

Food: The food was pretty good, considering the buffet style set up they had. There’s something there for everyone. There’s a delicious jerk chicken hut on the beach that was open daily. Just make sure not to take too much of that brown hot sauce!!! There were restaurants open only until midnight. After that, you’d have to turn to the sports bar, which wasn’t the greatest selection of food after drinking. The 24/7 sports bar served popcorn, nachos and they had a fridge filled with hotdogs, burgers and sandwiches. The a la carte restaurants that you were able to book did not live up to my expectations. We had the Gourmet restaurant, Asian restaurant and the Steak house. The Asian restaurant, given its buffet layout, felt like a cheap “Asian” buffet. The Steak house was a hybrid, self serve soups, salads, and desserts, while the entrée was served at the table. We saved the gourmet restaurant for last. And I must say, that this was the only restaurant that was really satisfying. It was set up as a la carte and the service was great.

Bars: There were quite a few bars and they had a good selection of drinks. My favourite was the strawberry daiquiri with rum- a must try. Only issue is that the closest bar to the rooms was the main lobby, I guess that’s why they provide you with a good in-room mini-bar!

Entertainment: Great entertainment staff. The nightly shows were fantastic. There was also a Disco located within the resort. It didn’t look too lively on the night we decided to check it out.

Beach: White sand beach with clear waters. There was rarely any seaweed. The downfall- the locals in the water, waiting to sell you necklaces, bamboo cups, and other “souvenirs”. They could be a little pushy, but they’ll leave you alone when you ask them.

Overall we had a great vacation, especially with what we paid. Lived up to the expectations. Would come back to the Riu and would definitely recommended to friends.

My wife and i have just returned from Jamaica, despite my wife sustaining a fractured arm,our stay at the Riu was marvelous,a little dated with the decor, however the staff were really friendly, the hotel was spotless, the service was first class, the food was of a very high standard.I must mention the Thomson rep,Pauline, she is how all reps should be,helpful, considerate, funny, nothing was to much trouble,10 out of 10,Pauline.
we met some nice people especially a lovely couple from York,Martin and Gaynor, thanks for keeping my wifes spirits up.
With a lick of paint,ie change the colour scheme in the hotel,i would reconmend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit this glorious island.

Room Tip: Always ask for an upgrade to the de-lux wing

this was our first trip to ocho rios. very beautiful place, beaches are amazing. The Riu was not the best hotel. We paid extra money to be in the exclusive wing and it didnt really feel like it. Food was ok, drinks were not the best. they only used the cheapest liquor available. personally i will not be returning to this establishment.

cant understand some of the poor reviews, we had a great time, staff are excellent, food and drinks are excellent. entertainments also good. Beach is beautiful and the guys selling in the sea will leave you alone if you say no thanks and mean it, just show some respect MON! I never bought anything from them but they still said hello every time they go by in the water. you can buy gifts and other things if you are so inclined. the excursions in jamaica are excellent, top ones in no particular order cool runnings party cat and dunns river falls, rio grande bamboo rafting, appletons tour, and the zion bus tour to nine mile and Bob Marleys mausoleum. would def go back again

We stayed here 3 years ago, a little late for a review, but Ithought it might be another a better way of reviewing this property compared to others. we have been to since then. We went as a family vacation which included both adults and kids. Our rooms overlooked the beach and we had a great time at the end of the day looking out at the beach having a drink and watching volleyball below us.

We ate mostly at the buffet but had at least one meal at a restaurant which was very good. Some of us had a great time going up and down BlueMountain while others go a little ill on the trip. The shopping trip into town was kind of a fiasco with everyone grabbing here and there to pull you into their shops and offer you air-conditioning.

The shows at night were a lot of fun and we never missed any of them. But don't get confused and think you are seeing cruise style shows here or anywhere if you go to an all inclusive. That being said we had a great time interacting with the guys and gals that we're doing the shows and it was well worth each evening that we spent there.

The beach was very good lots of vendors as others will tell you. We probably had more fun at the pool with all the activities going on and only had to sit through one hard rain the full-time.

We went away from this resort knowing that this would be a place that we would not hesitate to return to if we had kids with us. If not we might opt for an adults only.

Spent two weeks at this hotel, front desk staff approachable friendly and always with a smile, i was moved twice due to a fault with the lift again no poblem the reception staff were lovely and upgraded us to a delux suite always go for higher floors less bugs on the landing but none found in the rooms which was spotless. The buffet restaurant had a good variety of different foods for even those fussy eaters, wonderful staff and Omar he was helpful and considerate and brilliant with my daughter Sara she has a learning disability, and Omar was her guardian angel at mealtimes or as my Sara called him Oman give this man a pay rise for the hard work and long hours that you find most of these staff doing all over the hotel. Pauline our Thomson Rep had us in stitches she was brilliant and we called her Aunty Pauline by the end of the holiday Big up Pauline from the Birmingham and Wolverhampton sisters we love you off. The entertainment crew brilliant and very professional shows, hard workers from morning to night bless them but why mime there is so much talent amongst you no need to mime.the beach party wonderful, the pool always able to get a sun lounger, the same when on the beach, the jerk hut a must for lunch for me this was my second time at a Riu hotel and i enjoyed my stay and had a brilliant time with trips to Dolphin cove, Duns river fall etc it was a holiday to remember.

Room Tip: Higher floors Less bugs on the walkways
