“ClubHotel Riu Ocho Ríos FANTASTIC”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

We just returned 10/23/12 from a fantastic 5 days at the Club Hotel RIU in Ocho Rios Jamaica. The soaring open-air resort, it is beautiful with decorative touches that lend charm and elegance to this resort. Everywhere you look you'll have views of the sea and the many organized activities presented by the friendly staff. Rooms lie within a pair of horseshoe-shaped wings, each with between four and six stories. These "wings" face the sands of Mammee Bay Beach. Our beachfront accommodation surprisingly luxury, with private balcony marble floors, and mostly mahogany furniture that made us feel like kings. Throughout the day and evening, lots of activities are offered, and the staff goes out of the way to be friendly!! The bartenders and waiters were quick and happy to please and the grounds were immaculate. The pool area had plenty of comfortable lounge chairs and the pool bars were great. The buffet was plentiful, lots of choices and everything was hot and freshly made. The best of the gourmet restaurants we visited was Mammee Bay with the least desirable being the Japanese Restaurant. The sports bar was ok but food there was not good at all. If you were hungry u had to choose from small premade sandwiches and cooked Hamburg that you removed from the fridge and stuck in the microwave! My best advice here would be skipping eating at the sports bar. The drinks at the other bars were very good, you could get just about any drink imaginable and the bartenders were fast and friendly. Beach was great with no rocks and not crowded. Plenty of lounge chairs and very clean. The RIU animation team was fantastic, very enthusiastic. Always trying to make everyone have a good time.
We are seasoned travelers and I would give the RiU Ocho Rios a 4.5 star rating with the only negative being the sports bar food.
All being said a fantastic clean resort with no complaints!
Would love to go again next year!

Room Tip: Be prepaired for a 1:45 min drive from the airport in MoBay to RIU. The driver will stop along the...

Had a wonderful time, the beach was prestine, the resort is very clean. Loved the food and drink selection. We had no problem with the hot water, however there are a lot of bugs (but its the tropics). The staff aim to please Charmaine the bartender at the swim up bar was great!! Everyone is very friendly, and we enjoyed the nightly entertainment. The Jerk chicken on the beach is the best. We were upgraded to a Junior suite. I have nothing bad to say, I hope to return in the very near future.

Room Tip: Try to get a room near the elevator, and don't leave the patio door open at night.

Love, love, love this place. Trip #9 and again, all was perfect. Really...would I have returned here if the negative reviews were true? Some people just cannot be pleased.....don't believe them! Excellent rooms, staff, food, beach and pools.

Very nice resort and the people were great. We only stayed a couple of days but I would go back in a minute. Very popular wedding destination and from a look of things they did a great job.Ocho is a very popular attraction destination and the Club Riu is right there.

Room Tip: Ask for a ocean front or ocean view

Me and 5 ladies visited Ocho Rios 10/9 thru 10/16 and had a great time, this is my 4th time to Jamaica but 1st time visiting Ocho Rios. We all reserved Junior Suites with oceanfront except for one of the girls who had a standard room on the other side of the resort but her room was just as nice but without the view. Now all of my trips to Jamaica i have stayed at the Riu resorts, once in Montego Bay when it first opened, twice in Negril at the Palace & now Ochi. The resort is a typical Rui Resort very beautiful but i do have some negatives, 1st housekeeping did not provide good service at all, there were days when we didn't have any towels after she cleaned the room and it took them almost the whole day to provide them and they did it with an attitude, one morning they came knocking on the door at 8 am to clean the room...really??? 2nd there is a lot of debris in the sand on the beach, the beaches are much much nicer in Negril. 3rd the nightly entertainment (shows) was horrible the entertainment crew did a good job but the shows sucked, the only show i wanted to see was the Michael Jackson show and it was cancelled due the the dancer portraying MJ got sick & 4th the buffet dinner gets really tiresome after 2 days they need more variety. We did find a nice restaurant next door to the Riu called Bamboo Blu and ate there 3 itmes the food is excellent we also ate at 3 of the specialty restaurant Mandalay was ok, the Steakhouse was pretty good and the 3rd i can't remember, must not have been that great. The main pool is definately the more lively side of the resort and the entertainment crew had a lot of activities going on thru out the day on that side. i do recommend getting off the resorts Jamaica is such a beautiful Island with much to see and the people are so nice, All in all we had a great time, did the party boat to Dunns River falls that was great, also did the Nine Mile Bob Marley tour and we rented a taxi to take us around the Island and shopping. Looking forward to my 5th trip to the Island but will go back to Negril

Room Tip: Oceanfront not view Junior Suite is a must

The Riu is huge, too big for me. For those with children it is a great place to go Saw lots of families. Went for a wedding and met lots of people. The hotel needs to be updated as with some of the staff. It took a couple of days to get an extra key for room. Front desk help should improve their skills. Should update safes in room to combos. Floors everywhere seemed to be wet all the time, thinking they are being cleaned but when I walked back to my room in bare feet they were black. Ocean is amazing and views. Take the opportunity to get on a boat - we went on the catamaran and great to see the land from the sea. I think if you work a resort like this is great to just lay back. Personally I like smaller resorts. Should have a washroom closer to the restaurants.

Room Tip: It is a long walk from the 2 end buildings to the main building where the restaurants are. If you a...

On arrival at the hotel check in took 10 minutes with a cold drink. It took about the same time for our cases to arrive at the room. This was imaculate with a queen size bed and unlike some it would seem we had a good nights sleep every night. A full mini bar water coke etc & 4 bottles of spirit, rum, brandy vodka & gin. There is no tea/coffee making facillitys so take a travel kettle with you if you like a cuppa first thing, Tetley tea bags and coffee can be got from the main dinning room. Food always something to eat never had a problem here. Went to the steak house & sir johns both Great. Wine was better in Sir johns. Pauline the thomson rep. she is realy great and always ready to help.
Trips did 4 Blue Mountain best part for me was the bike ride back down the mountain. Dunns river exellent bit slippy in places even with the shoes just take your time. The party on the way back to port is fun with plenty of booze. Zion bus to Nine mile and the king of reggae lots to see on the way. Appelton Rum, this is a long day do take something to eat & drink with you. You can get a loverly chicken dinner for a xtra $10 (US) and its well worth it. YS falls is great and then you go & see the croc's at Black river brilliant.
If you like a little peace and quite at the hotel try the pool at the deluxe end also that end of the beach is good for snorkling, take some bread with you and the morning seems better. Be careful of the vendors on jet skis. All in all a great 1st visit to Jamacia. We met some great people from around the world. We will definitely go back. Stayed 26 Sept- 10 Oct

Room Tip: block 3. 3rd floor it was quiet for us.
